Early Imperial Roman Infantry Kitbash - Thu Mar 28, 2019 2:21 pm

The newly released Roman military figures from Kaustic Plastik and Haoyu Toys (all of which I intend to review) inspired and made possible a little kitbash attempting to recreate some of the most typical appearance of the early imperial legionary and auxiliary infantry -- about the time of Claudius I (41-54).

The most obvious differences in the look of these early imperial forces from the "classic" look of late-1st-/early 2nd-century Roman troops are: the use of simpler bronze or bronze-colored helmets; the use of chain mail for both legionaries and auxiliaries; the absence of long (braccae) or knee-length (feminalia) pants; rectangular shield (scutum) with curved side edges for legionaries and oval shield for auxiliaries. Obviously, there was plenty of variation (for example, as to which side to place the sword and the dagger, tunic color and shield devices); moreover, this is still a work in progress, and I am planning some upgrades and changes (e.g., repainting the auxiliary shield with a different decoration).

Most of the pieces were from the new KP sets, with some others from Ignite and other sources. I used KP bodies because you could easily remove and replace the upper arms, something very useful when dealing with these tight rubber chain mail tunics, but these KP bodies have some weak joints and stiff hands, and this was a pain to pose and photograph. I hope it is still presentable.

Ancient Greek Clothing in Sixth Scale - Sun Jan 20, 2019 5:09 pm

More HERE.

Since yesterday's post about kitbashing Greek hoplites with pre-existing elements (e.g., ACI armor and weapons, TBLeague bodies), it occurred to me search out some of the basic garments that would go with these. I did find them, and since anyone can make this with a modicum of skill and end up with garments that are more representative, accurate, and less expensive than what is commercially available, I decided to post a few photos here.

Keep in mind that these represent the simplest versions of these garments, and although ancient Greek clothing generally consisted of rectangular pieces of cloth and did not resort to (permanent) stitching, more elaborate versions eventually did develop with additional clasps or stitches creating more permanent closures of the open sides and something like real (as opposed to merely apparent) sleeves.

Audrey 2 (Custom) - Mon Jan 14, 2019 12:14 pm

Just sharing this custom made Audrey 2 "prop" that I bought from Ebay last year. I've always loved Little Shop of Horrors but there aren't really many toys of Audrey 2. There seems to be a bunch of "props" available on Ebay though. This is one of the smaller ones that seems to fit nicely in the 6 inch scale domain as a grown Audrey 2. Smile

Summary:

Pros: Nice looking Audrey 2, posable vines and leaves, decent scale for 5 to 6 inch toys.

Cons: Some paint problems, "skinning".

Someone asked elsewhere whether the Coomodel Vikings gear would fit on Phicen's M34 or M35. Although I suspected I knew the answer, I gave it a try with some of the extra parted-out parts I had picked up (I was not about to mess with the fully-kitted-out boxed set figures). In the end, with the help of my extra customized Conan head and a couple of pieces from the Barbarian Fantasy Warrior sets by Kaustic Plastik, it became a spontaneous kitbash. I also repainted and "furred" the helmet. It is loosely inspired by a couple of different Conan looks; consider it Conan's Alter Ego... or long-lost twin... or just something Conanesque. So here he is, in the last photo also sizing up the real Conan...

Star Wars Darth Vader Customs - Tue Oct 02, 2018 2:27 pm

Update: some additional (mostly old) photos in Post 6 below.
Update: some additional (comparison) photos in Post 13 below.
Update: further kitbashing in THIS thread.

The only sixth-scale Darth Vader boxed set that I've ever purchased as such was Sideshow's Return of the Jedi Vader from 2014 (and not the deluxe version you can see HERE). That was a great set, and at the time seemed quite perfect. Sure, there were some minor areas where it could have been improved, and some of these have been addressed by Hot Toys' relentless string of Vader releases (two A New Hope versions, a Rogue One version, and now an Empire Strikes Back version). I wasn't about to spend the increasingly excessive sums to purchase more Vader boxed sets, but I put together a kitbash ANH Vader from Sideshow and HT elements and did some modifications to the body and the helmet/mask, including lining the inside of the translucent lenses with bare metal foil so that you can see the amber color when you focus strong light directly on them.

Now that they have released their ESB Vader, I picked up some of the parted out parts to kitbash one on the basis of a damaged ANH Vader figure I had stumbled upon for a remarkably low price some time ago, plus some more Sideshow pieces. By far the most important parts to achieve the different look were the helmet/mask and the chest box, although I did get another couple of pieces too, and several gloved hands (the patterns on the ANH and ESB/ROTJ gloves are different). Once again I modified the inside of the lenses so that you could get a reddish glint with the right light (although for some reason it is less obvious -- which is not a big problem, but somewhat disappointing). Most of this was done weeks ago, but I only got the illuminated chest box yesterday, so snapped a couple more photos before boxing things up. So here they are, side by side. Except for an additional part or two (unless I use the Sideshow ones), I feel that my ESB kitbash would work for ROTJ, too. (And please forgive the quality of the images -- black does not photograph very well, besides every speck of dust showing up.)

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader10

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader11

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader12

As you can see, the ESB Vader's armor is darker and shinier, as it should be based on the onscreen appearance. The helmet is redesigned not only to be removed from the mask so that you can see the damaged scalp underneath (sorry, I forgot to take photos of that), but also to sit a little differently, slightly tilted back. I noticed they altered the sculpt on the mask, making the "nose" shorter. I could have sworn they made a mistake, but I did manage to see what looks the same in at least one ESB scene, so I am guessing they got it right. (Of course, they could very well have used different helmets and masks in different shots in the film.)

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader13

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader14

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader15

The transparency and/or tint of the lenses appears to be different, and it is much harder for me to detect and photograph the reddish glint on the ESB Vader than the ANH one, even though I used the same process and materials. I am particularly proud of getting the figure to kneel -- sorta (keep in mind that is an older ANH 2 Vader body and outfit in there, not the one that comes with the ESB boxed set). I will be looking at ways of enhancing the articulation at some point in the future.

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader16

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader17

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Cvader18

Unlike the ANH Vader, the ESB Vader's chest box is illuminated, and alternatively lights up different combinations of the little horizontal red lights. In both cases, this is film-accurate. The little container for the batteries is probably supposed to be attached to the chest box strap around the back of the figure, but I found it more convenient to let it hang loose in the back, so that I don't need to undo the belt to turn it on or off every time.

The last two photos show the mask before the modification, with backlighting to show the translucent amber lenses, and also the patterned inside of the mask (although it is not designed for you to see it). Speaking of which, removing and especially replacing the scalp was incredibly difficult. And yes, that is a Swiss Army Knife corkscrew drilled deep into Vader's scalp to assist in the process (no harm done, as that part is not visible when you put the top cap of the mask in place).

Hope you liked them.

Faora (slightly customized Lady Commander) - Thu Sep 27, 2018 11:06 am

A long time ago I picked up the Lady Commander figure from Xensation, inspired by the Faora character in Man of Steel. The figure had plenty of potential: despite (or because of?) the more basic materials (e.g., regular stretchy cloth body suit), it has excellent articulation, and the head bears a reasonably decent resemblance to the actress, even if it sits a little oddly on the thinner soft rubbery neck; and the look worked well enough alongside Hot Toys' General Zod. I thought the head could be helped with some shaving off of materials (I did some, with little effect, might do more), when I noticed that the costume was not quite accurate. More specifically, it was missing several armor pieces (one on the upper right arm, two on the upper left). After doing some research and analysis, I determined that they could probably be supplied or adapted from an additional costume, so I picked one up when I found it parted out. Months passed, until I stumbled across it while packing things up, and I gave the long-planned modification a try. It worked out quite well and very easily. So I took some photos while waiting for the laundry this morning, and here they are...

The first three photos, with the pseudo-Kryptonian background and the red monogram, are from months ago, long before the customization. The last six, with the spaceship background and the yellow monogram, are from after the customization (one of them also features the underlying body suit stripped of most armor elements, displayed on a random body).

What do you think?

At the instance of ReverendSpooky, I am sharing this rather incomplete project. After looking into the few options for a head of Famke Janssen to customize, I settled on Sideshow's rendition of her as Xenia Onatopp from that James Bond film with Pierce Brosnan. Here is what I had to work with:

Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Famkej10

The head was a bit on the large side, with somewhat elongated features and possibly larger jaws -- there was little I was going to be able to do about that. It also featured rather dark/contrasting makeup and lipstick, and an atypical for the actress hairstyle. I repainted the lips, eyes, eyelids, and eyebrows to match what we see in the X-Men movies more closely, and cut off the hair (like a wig), built a smaller cranium out of air-drying clay, painted that a dark red color, then covered that in Tibetan lamb hair from Morezmore. So I ended up with what you see in the following photos. Not sure I am done yet, although it is difficult to see what more I can do to improve it, besides finish the figure with more of the outfit (which I have currently misplaced). If she had black hair, she would remind me more of an entirely different actress, but I will not name her so as not to influence your viewing of the head.

Jurassic Pratt - Wed Jun 27, 2018 10:29 pm

In celebration of the new film, which I am hoping to see on Friday (so please no spoilers), and inspired by Michael Crawford and Bad Wolf, I picked up a couple of items for a Jurassic Park scene -- of sorts, since it also brings in other Chris Pratt material (I borrowed the title "Jurassic Pratt" from my friend Chris L). I used partly repainted Mattel Tyrannosaurus Rex figures (both the 23-inch and 43-inch ones) which are pretty nice, although they have various issues (I could go on) and the scale means they are playing the parts of growing dinos.

As there is a thread about the potential Threezero version of major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, I thought it could be useful to share some pics of the CAT TOYS take at the same character.

The outfit is nicely tailored even if it doesnt have a lot of detailings, the shoes are made of leather with wool gaiters, and the jumpsuite is tight but not restrictive for posing.

The headsculpt is the positive surprise of that offer, Cat toys went the rooted way for the hair, and the result is beyond my expectations, I didn't have to work it as much as some hot toys to get an accurate look. The eyes have the HT gloss which adds some realism, and the headsculpt itself has a great likeness, my guess is it's a clone from the HT civil war one.

The big let down of the figure are her accessories, an automatic rifle looking good from far but cheaply molded in one single piece, not what we usually expect at that size. You can't take of the mag or anything, which is surprizing as the side pistol has these features... it is still cheap execution too.
In the same way there two lower leg armor pieces that have a nice shape but a very cheap finishing for the strap and the color (I discarded them 10mn after unboxing lol)

Kitbash UFC Champion Forrest Griffin - Fri Jun 01, 2018 12:28 pm

The Head Conversion Tutorial inspired me to embark upon another little kitbash project I have been intending for awhile now. There are these cool little 6 inch (15 cm) UFC Ultimate Collector figures, with cartoonish proportions but pretty realistic head sculpts, which seemed to me almost suitable for using with sixth-scale bodies. I wondered about it and eventually bought a couple. I intended to do Michael Bisping (and still will), but the one that really grabbed my attention was Forrest Griffin (perhaps because his mug reminds me of a friend from undergrad). Although in some ways it is a very simple kitbash, I really wasn't sure whether it would work out. I was pleasantly surprised by the result.

That said, this is still a Work in Progress (among other things, I might repaint the head, although my lights do exaggerate the mismatch a little). I matched the shorts to one type worn by Forrest Griffin and replicated the logo (although it is not really very visible), and based the photos on actual photos of the real guy.

The original figure:

Can we/should we try this?

Considering the difference in figures, this does seem to work surprisingly well...

Part I: "slides" 0-19
For Part II see post 16 below; for Part III see post 31 below

Until fairly recently I skipped out on heads that were sculpted with a permanently attached neck for my customs, as I tended to use bodies like DAM, World Box, HT muscle, Phicen/TBLeague, which generally already had a non-removable neck. With some encouragement from OSW forum members, I eventually tried it out, and haven't stopped de-necking heads since. Apart from greater compatibility with action figure bodies of all kinds, a neck-less head has an additional point of articulation at its base, so I do this on principle with very few exceptions. (Thus there would be two points of articulation in the neck -- one at its top and one at its base; that said, the design of bodies, inside neck connectors, etc, makes this a matter of theory more than practice in many cases.) I cannot claim superior skills and expertise, and my results have varied over time (though given enough patience and persistence, they could have been pretty flawless). But at the urging of some of you, here is my procedure in cases like this.

I had a second Sullivan Stapleton Galac-Tac head lying around (the first one, which I had used in the Spartan Goddess of War review was not one of my best conversions), and it made do for the little tutorial that follows. Stopping to stage and take photos made it less than ideal, I nearly made some mistakes, and did a somewhat hurried job of it, but it should make do as an illustration. It is pretty simple and there are some alternatives to choose between.

I recently tried making a simple leather purse for one of my girls. At first I wasn't going post it, but with some encouragement/assurance (thanks DFC  Smile), I decided to go ahead and finish it. I'm attempting to make it look like a fashion photo shoot or a fashion magazine.

Here's Katie advertising her new purse (I've also made the logo/emblem to make the purse look more authentic).

A closer more detailed shot.

WIP:
The purse consists of four pieces of leather, it is painted and very lightly weathered to get the texture to show a bit. Then I've added magnets under the latch so it can close. Then everything is stitched together, the emblem was added later.

The Cigar Girl’s history began in the Roaring Twenties, an Era during which America enjoyed considerable prosperity, particularly in urban centers. Fueled by this newfound wealth, entrepreneurial restaurateurs began to expand their establishments from pure eateries to “supper clubs,” a destination where patrons could spend an entire evening eating, drinking (despite Prohibition), socializing, and listening to live music.
Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 Barbar10

The Cigar Girl was a common fixture at such clubs. She was always a pretty, young girl who wore a bright (often red trimmed in black), short saloon-style dress and sported a pillbox hat. Around her neck, she holstered a tray with a considerable selection of cigars, cigarettes, and various other tobacco products and sundries. Depending on the venue or the wishes of the restaurant’s owner, she might also carry candy, snacks, drinks, chewing gum, flowers, or novelty items.
Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 1mrsbe10

The job of a Cigar Girl was more than just selling tobacco products; she was part of the ambiance, mixing among the patrons while adding a touch of class and full-service. The Cigar Girl relied on her charm, quick wit, and a flirtatious manner to catch the attentions of businessmen, who would tip graciously for the pleasure of speaking with such a beautiful young woman. She was often described as being the “life of the party,” and thus while refrains of “cigars, cigarettes?” certainly enticed tobacco buyers, most customers were paying as much for her company as they were for her wares (and no, not as prostitutes).
Topics tagged under custom on OneSixthFigures - Page 2 61542510

Within a few short years the Cigar Girl archetype had been well-established by Hollywood, which had depicted her in many films of the time, and when the Eighteenth Amendment was finally repealed in 1933, she had caught on as a cultural icon: Cigar Girls could be found in restaurants, social clubs, bars, casinos, and even airports. Her popularity continued to soar through the postwar era into the 1950s, when she could be seen at sporting events and in the lobbies of theaters and music halls during intermissions.

But eventually, the Cigar Girl fell victim, as so many things do, to modernity. The mid-1950s brought automated vending machines which worked for free, and could earn the venue-owner a tidy profit besides. Changing attitudes about smoking aside, the Cigar Girl was increasingly seen as a bygone relic.
These days, you are more likely to see a Cigar Girl at a Halloween or Costume Party than you are inside a big city night club or hotel. But even though she has been largely relegated to a romantic yesteryear curiosity, there is still a demand for her services. There are still companies today (like Mrs. Bella’s Dolls) that specialize in hiring out models for private parties and corporate events whose organizers are looking to add a touch of old-school sophistication to their event. And though cigars and cigarettes can still be seen on their trays, their are Vape alternatives also in evidence.

My Cigar Girl was a long-time in the making. I knew the first time I saw the basic saloon-style dress and stockings from Super Duck a few years back what I was going to do with it. It’s taken me a very long time to gather all the things I wanted her to carry. I gave her as big a variety of items as I could reasonably fit on the handmade tray, wanting to make sure she could cover the gamut of possible items her patrons might desire.
This little project reminded me of when I turned 18 (just before going overseas while serving in the Air Force) when my Dad took me to the Playboy Club he belonged to (not sure they still have Playboy Clubs today). While there weren't Cigar Girls dressed like this one or the lovely ladies in the photos, there were Bunnies acting in the same role. It was a fun and nostalgic trip down memory lane for me.
Hope you enjoy.

Thor custom and other Marvel heroes - Sat May 12, 2018 7:51 am

I found this board this week and happy to be here.  This is my first post on this board.

I just finished my Thor custom and like AFM, I feel the M35 body is a great way to start.

Using the M35 I added Sideshow Monty Python Knight pants (thanks to an idea by Betic1 on SSF) which was quite difficult.  I eventually had to cut out the lining of the pants to get it fit and resew the top of the pants which I had to cut.  I added height extenders which made the figure wobbly but added tape to give a little stability.  I also needed to add tape to the foot pegs to get it fit in the SS boots.

Anyway enough writing and here is a pic:
