The Star Wars galaxy is vast and filled with numerous alien species and droids. Today Hot Toys is delighted to further broaden its Star Wars 1/6th scale collectibles series by introducing the Jawa and EG-6 Power Droid collectible set based on the characters’ appearances in Star Wars: A New Hope!

Jawas are meter-tall humanoids completely hidden behind rough, hand-woven robes. Their faces are concealed within the dark folds of a cowl, from which peer their sickly glowing yellow eyes. They comb the deserts of Tatooine in search of discarded scrap and wayward mechanicals, incapacitate droids and drag them to their treaded fortress-homes, immense sand-scarred vehicles known as sandcrawlers, and sell their hastily refurbished junk to moisture farmers who are hard-pressed to find a better selection elsewhere.

Little more than walking batteries, power droids trundle along as directed by their owners or their programming, recharging vehicles and machinery. They are often called “Gonk” droids in imitation of their simple vocalizations. There are many different models of power droid, and are common sights throughout the galaxy but little noticed despite their critical importance to both military and civilian life.

Meticulously created based on the appearance of the two characters in the movie, the 1/6th scale Jawa collectible figure features newly developed head with LED lights, skillfully tailored costume, variety of accessories, and a sand-themed figure base. The EG-6 Power Droid is finely crafted with detailed mechanical body with weathering effects, and also comes with a sand-themed figure base.

Expand your Star Wars collection with these unique characters!

They look good, but I wonder a bit about the scale; always imagined the "Gonk" droid larger than this compared to a Jawa. It's nice that the Jawa's eyes can light up, but the way they made them they do look robotic. Perhaps something more conventional with phosphorus might have worked better? And unless they offer them separately, we'll know that they are purposefully striving to empoverish collectors with a price tag of... I'm guessing... at least $350?

I’ve heard it’s going to be around $267 — still overpriced for a droid with limited everything and only ONE Jawa (I’m guessing the other Jawa will be put in the set with the other droid).

Agreed. I can see you needing another Jawa, but what if you don't need the droid? I suppose you can always try to get it parted out.

These are pretty cute! Though yes, I cringe to know the price....

And I agree about the eyes, GF... they look almost TOO 'bright' here... would have been better to be a bit more subtle. Though admittedly it's hard to tell for sure in this promo pics. In certain lighting, it might work better.

Timewalker has it up for PO at $259 USD — too high. Particularly since you can still get the Jawa 2-pack from SS at $220, or sometimes less if you’re willing to hunt eBay. I have no need of the Gonk droid. If this had been 2 Jawas and the Gonk, I could possibly see that price point.

Yikes, yeah.... that is steep. And I agree, it should have been a two-pack of Jawas. It's dastardly that they are trying to make people buy two entire over-priced sets like that just to get the pair.

For once, an aftermarket Sideshow figure is less than Hot Toys....score! ;D

Good point, Mark. Remind me -- though I think we've discussed this before and there might even be a post -- are Sideshow's Jawas pretty much perfect already? Given that they are all bundled up in soft goods and have dark alien faces, I'd imagine that as long as they provided them with decent articulation they must be very good. Perhaps their eyes don't light up? If so, maybe look into applying some clear or yellowish phosphorescent paint, then shine a light at their eyes for a bit whenever you need them to glow. Smile

The bodies on the SS ones are a little floppy -- I haven't removed their clothes to try to correct that error, though I've heard it's doable. And -- though I haven't tried it -- I think the eyes DO light up (I don't tend to mess with those features myself, as they often are more of a pain to work with). Aside from the loose body issue, I think the SS Jawas are perfectly fine for 3rd (or is it 4th) tier characters, and don't really see any reason to get gouged by HT. The only down-side I can see to NOT ordering the HT version: it may convince them that delving into background aliens isn't worth the effort -- and we are in desperate need of Ackbar, Greedo, Tuskens, and others with current techniques.

Hmmm, I see your point about the aliens issue, but at the same time... I feel it's a bit different with the jawas as they are more like background characters and also very small and plentiful, akin to the Ewoks. Which is not to say that they don't matter [they are certain iconic to the location!], but when it comes to the 1/6 depictions, they don't seem precisely comparable to, say, named individual characters who are more humanoid in size, if that makes sense. Also, it's not like these have actual alien face-sculpts underneath... right??

Yeah, that's one of my main issues with the price. These don't require actor approval, or sculpting of any real details to the face, so the price just seems like a cash-grab. Now, if this set fell in the $180 range, I could see possibly getting it, but these are seriously -- and grossly -- over-priced.

Completely agree.  :/

Thanks for explaining about the Sideshow Jawas. And agree -- these should be made more affordable to begin with. They require less work to get right than Ewoks, by the way -- bandaged faces, if I remember correctly. Yep, even less than that, black stocking with fitted glowing eyes (more spherical than the robot button eyes in the HT product) -- found it:
