These are my favorite dogs. Pretty nice statues, although they have picked what seems to be a slightly unusual stationary/anticipatory pose.

I have to get one of the brown ones so I can finally have a Scooby-Doo to go with Daphne and Velma.

I've always been convinced that Scooby is a Great Dane. And when I was a kid our resort neighbors had a huge harlequin (spotted) Great Dane named Caesar, just like the one in the first (actual animal) photo. That was the sweetest, clumsiest, and most good-natured animal ever.

These are lovely! Mr.Z make such great figures/figurines in general, but seem to be especially good at creating realistic looking textures on short-coated animals.

Scooby IS a Great Dane, Guv. The first brown/tan one is the way to go for him, as he doesn’t have a brindle coat.

I had the same thought as soon as I saw these on the BBICN forum.

Then I remembered that Scooby has black patches. He's probably a pretty unique Great Dane in more ways than one. I'm still very tempted to get the brown one whenever they go up for pre-order.

My vision for the the Flirty Girl Daphne and Velma was to have them in a crossover from the classic to a more Scooby Apocalypse comic book world.

I’ve never heard of that comic — that’s pretty cool. Hmmm... no Fred? I forgot about his spots — I wonder now if the brindle Dane wouldn’t be more appropriate, or if that would be too unrecognizable...? I definitely need to do what you did and change out the Daphne head — not sure why Flirty girl used the same head for both of them.

It lasted for 36 issues. It wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be, but it acts as a window into a more serious and dangerous world for the characters.

Fred's in it, and he has his own pretty significant story line.

I was thinking brindle because it's a darker brown. From what they've shown the pattern is quite subtle, almost like shading, rather than stripes:

I don't like the sculpts at all. There's something quite creepy about them! I used the best alternative I had for Daphne, which was DAM's IDF Nachshol girl.

I tried to make the best of Velma's head by cutting the hair into a more recognisable shape.

They're both on the same VeryCool FX05B Suntan Big Breast body, but to reduce Velma's height I took off her feet and ankle pegs. She's wearing a pair of Asmus Joker Bank Robber shoes as they were the nearest thing I had to short boots.

I have a hard time posing Daphne. Since taking the photo I swapped out the pancake left hand for a trigger finger hand, which has a more realistic relaxed appearance.

Heh. Scooby Doo. Never thought of that.

Very nicely done, Asta. And these are certainly some more impressive comic renditions of the original characters. As for Scooby's spots, realistic or not they could always be painted on, I suppose.

One day I might find better sculpts for them. I've looked but so far seen nothing that fits the bill.

The comic artwork for this series was really good. The premise is good, and at the beginning it feels like a group of survivors in an early episode of The Walking Dead. But as it progressed I started to lose interest. Nice to have them for the art though.

I've always loved the Scooby-Doo cartoons. I think I have them all. One of the best series was Mystery Inc. from 2010-2012. There was an amazing use of light and colour, and the story was pretty good too.

I think, right from the beginning as a kid, I was hooked by the atmosphere in some of the early cartoons. Even though it was full of silly humour they still sometimes managed to create an eerie feeling. Scooby Apocalypse was a natural progression.

The dog could definitely be repainted in acrylics. I turned a black cat into a black and white cat once. The only fear is messing it up. Mr. Z aren't cheap, so I think I could live with the brindle.

Just got to see who's going to sell them. The only place I ever see a big range is Machinegun-figures.com in France.

Sometimes Cotswold gets them, but not all the different varieties. Most of the time I just get them off the numerous eBay sellers I trust.

While I’ve liked some of the later Scooby cartoons, nothing can beat Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? The originals were the best.

That was the one that got me hooked. It would be on TV when I got home from school. Very Happy

I'll probably wait for Machinegun. They don't do pre-orders, so you have to tag an item to receive an email when it becomes available to order. I'd rather just pre-order and be done with it.

Machinegun-Figures.com now has these in stock, and they're quite a bit cheaper than the only other place I saw them (www.space-figuren.de).

MG has them with a cheaper listing and cheaper shipping.

There's no perfect Scooby-Doo, but I went for the brown one as the best option.

I would have thought the beige one would work too, but brown looks good. Thanks for the heads up. They are my favorite dog.

These animal figures are beautifully-realised as usual, but I'd be more into the idea of collecting them if they were articulated.

But then if they were articulated, they'd most probably be less beautifully-realised.

The colour question is a tricky one.

A Google search for Great Dane colours brought up The Happy Puppy Site, who write:

Fawn is the most common of the Great Dane colors.

It’s also the most recognized; after all, Scooby Doo was a fawn Great Dane!

I'm not sure what was best, but the brown one is now on the way. These are Mr. Z's outdoor shots for comparison:

In Scooby Apocalypse he sometimes looks a bit paler than in his old cartoon days.

Since Scooby was atypical by design the only way to have his colours on a realistic version would be a repaint.

Scooby-Doo is a Great Dane. He's not based on anyone's pet; he was originally intended to be the sidekick to the kids until the development process (and an initial rejection from the CBS board) made it clear that the dog should be the star.

When Scooby-Doo was early in development in late 1968, co-creator Joe Ruby-  afraid Hanna-Barbera might be sued by the owners of the comic strip Marmaduke for using a Great Dane - changed Scooby (at the time named "Too Much") to be a sheepdog. This version of the show, then called Mysteries Five, was rejected by CBS daytime executive Fred Silverman, and after learning why Ruby had changed the dog to a sheepdog, producer Joseph Barbera groaned to Ruby "...just use a Great Dane!"

The character's design was inspired by a conversation character designer Iwao Takamoto had with a Hanna-Barbera studio employee, who was a breeder of Great Danes. Takamoto took notes from his colleague, and then proceeded to take all of the rules that made an award-winning Great Dane and break them: bowed legs instead of straight, a double chin instead of a strong one, a sloped back instead of a straight one, and spots instead of a smooth coat (no purebred Great Dane has spots, though Harlequin Great Danes have black mottled patches).

Interesting info, Asta. I can live with close enough for Scooby.

I hadn't read Scooby's history until today, so that was all new to me.

Did you decide on a colour?

Can't find any in-hand reviews yet to see how the brown one turned out. Hopefully he matches the promotional photos and the black parts look like shading, otherwise I might be hoping I'd ordered the fawn one.
