Come on, horse experts...

Holy cow, that's a lot of big photos of a lot of little horses. I'm very far from being a horse expert, but the slightly emaciated look seems to be correct for the breed. I can't speak as to the proportions and anatomical detail accuracy. The mane and tail are perhaps a little over the top, to go with the dramatic pose. Overall, it looks gorgeous enough to me, but not something I feel the need to invest in.

Gorgeous! I love the pose too. They look very true to their breed - Tekes are the greyhounds of the horse world, lean and built for the desert. Many have a really distinctive metallic sheen to their coats which Mr Z have pulled off beautifully. That said, the hair texture is a little too much I think. I like it on the other horses they’ve done but on such a distinctly desert bred horse it doesn’t make sense. You could probably get away with having it as a thoroughbred, though the head and hooded eyes are very distinctly Tekey.

I do wish they’d use better hair fibre for the mane and tail though, it looks really cheap and nasty, especially as the real breed tends to have quite sparse hair and often have the mane shaved entirely.

I can’t comment on the tack as I’m unfamiliar with what culture and era it’s from, but I do like the red saddle, though the matching bridle leaves much to be desired.

Thanks for your input, Christine, and the photos. I wonder if this could be used for an Old West horse (they seem tall, like the Yili horse). The tail could definitely use a trim. (I’m also glad they are going to be offering these either with, or without, the tack.)

I really like these now its just which colour to go with.

I think the Black or Grey would give more utility but the dark yellow is so like the breed.

I think these are more representitive of the breed more so than my Ill horse, as I'm sure they worked out as not being as tall as the figure

Are you saying the Mr. Z Ili is too tall for the actual breed?

i believe so If I measure 'Cinnamon' my Yili horse he measures around 10.5 inches which equates to 63 inches or 15.75 hands tall

the average height of one of these is 14 hands or 56 inches a difference of 7 inches (scale 1 and1/6 inches)

to be honest the horse I usually ride Myrtle is 16 3 hands and shes tall for me and i'm 5'10"

Not really tbh, horses used for ranch work tended to be small compact beasties like quarter horses, and Tekes are an ancient breed which have only relatively recently been exported worldwide. With the right tack you could probably get away with it though!

Thanks for the further insight. I’m hoping to get one of these and either make a Western style saddle/tack, or get one from AJ Clothiers that will fit. With the gunslinger figure and the Wilderness Rider box sets on PO, it just seems wrong not to have a horse. I also signed up to be notified on machinegunfigures for one of the Ili horses (they think they are going to get more, but we’ll see); hopefully I can get one that matches whatever color I can get of this version.

Overall, these seem pretty decent, though i agree that the mane and tails are rather thick — these are EXTREMELY sparse on the actual breed. I would be tempted to rehair one and display It sans-tack but with the characteristic neck/throat collar ornament.

The pose and conformation — hmm. I’m personally not keen on the hind end .... seems too large for the breed and model, and the pose seems a little ‘downhill’ for my liking. (Would work well for a Helm’s Deep scene, or a ranch/reining horse pose though ). That said, I could live with it. And when tacked up, it looks a lot better. Definitely seen wayyy worse on that score. ;p

ETA: they seem to have captured the head/face quite nicely.

Now to see if I could pre-order.... :3

I’ve seen it on eBay, but the prices for horse sans tack seems a bit over-priced from Chinese sellers based on the price I provided OP in USD dollars (after conversion) — they’re asking essentially double MSRP.

I POd the dark brown horse from Timewalker (without the saddle/tack); I'm hoping machingunfigure.fr can actually get the Mr. Z Ili horses back in that they claim they backordered (I put my name on the notify list for all the ones they listed -- one of which is dark brown). I'm hoping to be able to use them both as the same horse, but in obviously different stances. The biggest problem is going to be making a western style (Old West) saddle and harness that will actually fit both of them. (Judging by pics, they both seem to be about the same height -- again, hopefully that's true).

Ha, yeah I’d love an Ili still, too. And the brown/bay one I the one is what I was hoping for. But I gave up on it. I know Jean Ross has some extra a while back, but since shipping from Canada to UK is insane , it was just not possible. :/

Which coat colour are you hoping to get?

I've had a couple of these for a while, but hadn't gotten around to sharing any pics.

Both of these are taken just straight after unboxing. In my opinion, these Mr. Z horse models look best in daylight. They can look good in artificial lighting too, but the daylight seems to bring out the best in them and make their coats seem more realistic. I was not overly impressed with either of the coat colours when I first opened them, but in the sunlight they looked much better.

I'm still not sure if I will keep both of them, and I'm also trying to decide if I want to purchase the bright bay ('red brown') version or not as well (assuming I can find it as they seem to be selling out now). I'm rather picky about horse coat colours, and while these are both passable, I may eventually do some touch-up repainting, as well as some re-hairing of the mane and tail with natural fibers. But for now, they will do. : )

Likewise, there are some minor issues I have with the pose itself, but it is still much better than most other 1/6 horse models out there, so I'm ok with it. I think this model looks best when under saddle and with a rider on top of it. When it's just by itself, it looks a little strange, mostly because the set of the lips and teeth look like it should have a bit in its mouth. The pose also makes more sense if the horse is being pulled up by the reins. Eventually I'll kitbash some riders, but I just don't have the time/money for that right now.

I also got the Mr. Z Thoroughbred in black -- I haven't had a chance to fix it's mane yet, but when I do, I'll post some pics of that one, too. : )
