I like how each version basically has 2 looks. Looks pretty cool. Have no idea if this is just a historical offering or if it's supposed to be based of a game or film?

Fictional or historical, it looks a lot more believable than some of those "tactical tease" ladies. Smile From some angles it almost looks a little like Cate Blanchett... who did play a rather unconvincing Soviet officer in Indiana Jones movie I don't consider canon.

I don't see much that I would call fictional other than the red cross armband, I doubt any Russian would be insane enough to wear one. And you can just not use the arm band. The skirts are the right length for a change though I think the medic would be more likely to wear the blue skirt from the pictures I've seen.

I do wish they would have included a leather tanker jacket, tanker helmet and breaches with the first one instead of the over coat and poncho though.

I suggested similar sets to Alert Line a couple years ago. I just hope I can afford them now that they're finally available.

The medic looks pretty good historically for the 1943 field uniform. The shoulder boards denote her as a starshina (sergeant major), though I think there ought to be a red border around the edge, as here:

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced Red_ar10

However, there seems to be a lot of variety and inconsistency with Red Army uniforms, what with lend-lease equipment and the lack of uniforms made specifically for women - they were supplied with men's uniforms (apart from the skirts, of course) and boots, all of which were often too big for them.

Red Army medics were often armed with rifles or pistols for personal defence and protection of the wounded, so there's nothing out of place with her rifle.

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced Red_ar11

While the Medic is wearing the 1943 field uniform with the M43 Gymnasterka smock, the NKVD officer is wearing the 1943 dress uniform, with a more tailored tunic and blue dress skirt.

She was a little harder to pin down historically. Mollo's The Armed Forces of World War II notes that the distinctive colours of the NKVD were bright blue and crimson, as with their collar patches which were bright blue with crimson piping.

The Alert Line figure has blue piping and blue shoulder boards. At first I wondered whether they'd confused the uniform with the Air Force, as with Major Nikulina here:

I kept searching, believing that with their history Alert Line must've had a source for their choice. I eventually found this photo taken at the Dnipropetrovsk National History Museum in Ukraine:

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced Female11

The caption states that it's an NKVD captain's uniform, and the four stars on the shoulder board confirm that.

It's the same style tunic with buttonless pockets, and blue piping on the collar and cuffs.

I'm not sure about the collar patches on the greatcoat as I haven't found a matching example. If it turns out to be an error, then I'm sure they could be recoloured with acrylics.

One omission, which was noted on the BBICN forum, is that while she has both a stick and a drum magazine for the PPSh-41, she only has a pouch for the drum.

I really like these figures, and was hoping they'd stand up to scrutiny. I used to have a lot of Dragon figures, but have kept only a few. Among them is Anna, the Red Army traffic controller. With a head swap and her coat buttoned up she's still a very respectable figure two decades on.

KG Hobby has the cheapest prices I've seen for the Alert Line sets, and since I had a 336 HKD store credit and a 250 HKD reward point coupon I went for two of the NKVD girls and one of the Medics.

WWII figures are not my cup of tea, but I must say this is very well made. The HS, though not pretty, has a stern facial expression that makes it perfect for a military type bash.

Talon, I had my post reply open for a few hours while searching for information and original photos, and also for any comment on the figures themselves beyond that on the BBICN  forum. So it was good to see you'd posted in the meantime with some positive thought towards them. Smile

I've never studied the Red Army in depth, and it seems like a bit of a minefield.

EDIT:

I just found another resource for information:

https://www.13thguardspoltavaskaya.com/uniform.html

There is this short passage:

Womens uniforms.

Pre and early war uniforms consisted of the standard issue gimnastiorka as worn by the men, however they were tailored and seamed to fit the female upper body form and the front button fly was reversed to that of the mens tunics. It was worn with a dark blue coloured beret with an enamelled cap star. A matching blue coloured side pleated skirt (Yubka) was worn, both for field and service use. In 1942 a khaki coloured beret and skirt was issued to replace the blue issue beret and skirt, which largely thereafter was worn as service dress.

...

Generally during the war, particularly in the field women made do and wore and adapted the same issue uniforms as worn by the men.

I also noticed, from reading that page, that the Medic is wearing a Guards badge. Though it's a bit over sized compared to the image on the page, and incorrectly positioned.

The Guards badge.

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced S-l22510

Units who were awarded Guards honourific status were permitted to wear the Guards badge.
The titles were first introduced on 18th September 1941, by order of the Supreme Command
and Prikaz 308 of the People's Commissar of Defence for distinguished service during the Yelnya
Offensive. Units nominated also received special Guards Banners accordingly.

On 21st May 1942 Guards rank titles were introduced and the Guards badge was authorised to be worn on the right breast of the gimnastiorka. Guards units were generally better manned, equipped, fed and paid than regular Rifle units for most of the war.

...

This image shows the correct position to wear the Guards badge. The badge was worn over the right breast pocket flap and in line with its upper left edge. However, from archive photographs of the period, the badge was seen worn almost anywhere on the right breast above and below the pocket flap.

I didn't stop digging to find a precedent for the collar patches on the coat:

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced Alert_10

Today I finally made a breakthrough.

Firstly, I found an old forum post with somebody showing off an NKVD Colonel's overcoat:

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced Nkvd_c10

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced Nkvd_c11

That was a start, but I needed to confirm it was genuine, and eventually stumbled onto this page about M43 NKVD uniforms:

http://otlichnik.tripod.com/uniform3.html

M43 UNIFORMS - COATS

...

Both greatcoats and overcoats have rank insignia. They use brass buttons, standard gold service boards, and special collar tabs. The collar tabs are royal blue with sky blue piping and have a large brass button in the upper portion.

Therefore, it turns out that, far from being fantasy, Alert Line have produced a surprisingly accurate portrayal of a 1943 onward NKVD State Security officer.

Since the officer's service uniform (as this figure is wearing) didn't change until 1958, she would fit into the era of a certain 1957 Indiana Jones adventure (which may or may no be canonical).  Wink

1/6 figures often spark my interest in a subject!

With historical figures I've set myself a criteria that they have to be as close to accurate as possible, give or take some leeway owing to scale. It's helpful in focusing the attention, and rules out the Russell Crowe type of gladiators, the Mel Gibson Bravehearts, or extreme fantasy knights.

I've made exceptions, as with the Ace's US Army Vietnam girls. On the one hand much of their uniform and equipment is painstakingly accurate, but they also cross over into a strange Tank Girl type of territory.

Since I sold most of my old DML figures, which I regret now as they had some great clothing and weapons, I don't have many WWII. I think it's really just the DML Red Army traffic controller, Anna, and Star Ace's Virgil Hilts. At a push there's the Canadian Devil's Brigade Wolverine, and the essentially late 1930s Soldier Story Chinese Nationalist and two KadHobby Japanese.

I must've kept Anna for a reason, and it must be the same reason I'm drawn to Alert Line's pair. Very Happy

She's on the original Dragon body, so to put a modern head on her I think I used the neck from a Sideshow Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I still have to find the missing top 'button' from her gimnasterka collar.

I've had the three Alert Line figures for a month, but never took any photos until today.

They turned out as well as the prototype photos.

I bought two of the NKVD lieutenants so I could have her displayed in both uniform options:

WWII - NEW PRODUCT: Alert Line Boundary Game Model: 1/6 WWII Soviet Army Female Soldier NKVD, Soviet Army Female Medical Soldier #AL100031/32 Price announced 50962606816_2b2ff8a725_o

The holster for the Tokarev TT-33 comes with a shoulder strap attached to it, which isn't really necessary since the figures have Sam Browne belts. So, for the 'winter' version I unglued the strap from the rings and hung it from the belt using its loops instead.

For the version without the coat I kept the strap for variety.

I had to cut a lot of the breasts off both figures since they were so big the tunic wouldn't close properly!

Only after putting the two coats together did I realise that they were a different grey. One is noticeably paler, as though Alert Line changed material during production. I preferred the darker grey, so used the paler one for my kitbashed third figure. The more worn look of the coat fits better with the worn looking overcoat on the Dragon traffic controller.

The kitbashed third NKVD has VTS' Psi-Judge Anderson sculpt, Hasbro Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Dovchenko boots; Dragon in Dreams Rurik Sam Browne, holster and Tokarev. The rest is from the Alert Line set. Under her greatcoat she's going completely commando. Very Happy

The Guards Medic Starshina (Sergeant Major) isn't such an interesting looking figure, though the 1943 field uniform and equipment are still very detailed. She came with two pairs of rifle ammunition pouches, but I only put one on since only one was worn (on the right hip) from mid to late war. Two pouches were apparently only worn early war in the war.

Skirts and stands don't work well together:

I sometimes take the grabber out and let the skirt support the figure over the upright, but this skirt is split on either side so offers little support.

Thanks.

I don't often buy military figures and these didn't exactly fit with anything, but I couldn't resist the NKVD and the idea that they could cross over into the wartime adventures of Indiana Jones. Or even his postwar shenanigans since those uniforms lasted until 1958. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was set in 1957, and that had been the spur to buy a 1953 dated deactivated Tokarev TT-33. It's in the lower left with its holster and lanyard in this old photo:

The NKVD figures lead to the medic, but I could probably have done without her.

Yes, the grey is really eye catching. I'm glad I received at least one example of the darker grey version, since the paler one gives off a completely different impression. It looks worn and dusty like she's seen a lot of combat action!

So I kept the two smarter figures with an Indiana Jones, and put the pale grey one with the worn looking Dragon traffic controller in another room.
