658 RMB is around $100 USD. Seems ok for that price.

Beautiful sculptures. The only thing that surprised me is that horses' necks are so creased at the nape. Is that how it is in nature (I haven't been around enough horses)?

Great horse sculpts but I noticed that too, it's a bit like elephant skin..odd, the eyes look a little odd to me in some pics too but that might just be the breed of horse, no idea as I'm into iron steeds Wink . As a bonus those horses really make the details of the riders pop out at you! Fantastic display option as long as they arn't prone to falling over, my samurai one is as it's rearing on two legs and supporting a figure clad in heavy metal armour that tends to take out half my samurai and ninja collection every so often, I keep meaning to make a stand for it...

I'm amazed with these photos (as one should be). If the quality lives up to the expectations, it'll be damn worth the money. I might get a couple: one to go with TBLeague Skarah and another to go with Death Dealer.
Now, which figure is this one with the horse nº 005? I really liked the feeling of it.

Delanie

They look fine to me although Christine would probably have a better Idea.
Do we Know what type of horse they are supposed to be and how big are they at the shoulder?

Delanie wrote:Do we Know what type of horse they are supposed to be and how big are they at the shoulder?

Ili or yili is the breed. The Kunes prairie of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is known as the "hometown of the Ili horse", also known as the "heavenly horse".

Characteristics

They are compact in conformation with a light head and straight profile. The withers are well pronounced and the back is short and strong, though the loin is long. The legs are clean.[1] Yili horses are normally bay, chestnut, black or gray[2] and are an average height of 14 hands high.[1]

Breed history

Yili horses originated around 1900 from Russian breeds crossed with Mongolian stock.[2] Don, and Don-Thoroughbred crosses as well as Orlov Trotters were used from 1936 on to improve the native horses. In 1963 the decision was made to aim for a draft-type horse.[1]

Uses

Yili horses are used for riding and driving, and also bred for their meat and milk.[2]

So they're a fairly recent breed, and as such an odd choice for the historical figures they're showing in the photos.

Hello everyone , I've joined up..
At last, a horse from a Chinese manufacturer that looks convincing . The variety of paint finishes is also very attractive. It is indeed an Asian animal, and looks it , but they've got it right somehow this time.
I also like the plain pose, no operatic stuff.
Size looks about 15.5 hands, which is perfect.I shall certainly get a couple of these and mess about with them.

Are the stirrups adjustable? Military stirrups were low - riders tended to have a straight leg when fighting from the saddle. When scouting or racing, stirrups tended to be higher.

The horses are just the right size for the periods that Tony is interested in but too tall for my time periods. Warhorses tended to top out at about 15 hands before the 17th-18th century.

Ooooh, they do look good, though definitely not the size of the Chinese breed mentioned earlier - they look around 15-16hh rather than 14hh! They’re really nicely put together though, and I love that their colours are realistic and they’ve got fibre hair. (Though I’d be rehairing them with mohair immediately if I had one XD)

Regarding the neck, you’d be surprised by just how many creases and wrinkles horses have in those areas but it’s entirely dependent on the pose.

These are really nice. We had horses when I was a kid, and No. 005 reminds me of the male we had. It would look cool with one of my Red Sonja (even with the tac).

Agreed that they look too tall for Asiatic armies ,but I expect that with a little work with a razor saw, it would be possible to shorten these horses , if you felt the need. I've spent the last ten years lengthening horses, but I can see these do look tall. We must wait to measure one in hand.

Incidentally , Shazzdan ( you and I share an obsessional archaeological interest , I believe) the horse archer cultures of the steppe, starting with the Scythians rode very short,so they could stand up in the stirrups to shoot. There's an excellent book called " The History of Horsemanship " by Chenevix-Trench, highly recommended).
The Western European style was long stirrups to withstand shock. The two styles of riding collided in the Crusades.

Stirrups don't do anything to withstand shock. That is an old myth first proposed by Lynn White Jnr. to support his dodgy feudalism theory.

The best book I've ever found on this subject is Andrew Ayton's Knights and Warhorses.

During the Crusades, both sides used cavalry the same way. The Kurdish and provincial Arab heavy cavalry were virtually identical to European heavy cavalry. Turkish horse archers had a very small role in battles in this region at the time.

Can these saddles fit a cat or a pomeranian? Just curious? Also, On the 005, there is a female figure. Is that figure a custom piece or part of a select series?

While nice, who are Mr Z and where would you get them from!? I get very wary of these little companies popping up, promising this and that, but, you never see in hand pics or reviews anywhere.

I'd very much wait till someone actually gets one and you can see what it's like before anyone else does anything.

Mr. Z have been around for years making dogs and cats, and now horses.

Machinegun Figures is the place where I generally see them:

Here's one for their Hanoverian, so long as you don't suffer from seasickness:

There's a written review from the old country:

https://www.onesixthwarriors.com/forum/sixth-scale-action-figure-news-reviews-and-discussion-/859932-review-mr-z-german-hanovarian-warmblood-horse.html

The horses seem to have a shiny, waxy finish.

When I was looking into buying their Rottweilers I watched a video, but thought the dogs looked a slight step down from the likes of Border Fine Art, Country Artists or Sherratt & Simpson, which I pick up for a pound or two secondhand when I see them. The Mr. Z seemed to lack sculpting texture.

Mr. Z have never been cheap with their dogs, as you can see from the Machinegun page.

The only 1/6 horse I had was Dragon's Blitz. But I never really liked it, due to the plastic and all the unsightly joints. I've ordered all the Jeanne d'Arc sets so will have PopToys' horse, which looks like the same one they're using for their Mrs. Q.
