One day I'll learn not to take these translations so literally; I was expecting a 'Bloody Judge' Hanging Judge Jeffries-type character (which would actually have been much cooler, IMHO).

Same here.  I was expecting a dark rendition of 'Hanging Judge Isaac Parker' of perhaps the self-appointed 'Judge Roy Bean' (good movie back in the 70s).

This character does have some interesting qualities.  I like the dark glasses ala Jean Reno in The Professional.

Technically Judge Roy Bean was a real person; the movie didn’t exactly cover him all that well historically to be honest.
