The two dominant grocery chains in Australia are Coles and Woolworths. Between the two of them they control over 50% of market share with Woolworths having around 4% more than Coles. Last month Coles introduced a promotion where you get a miniature version of one of their popular products for every $30 you spend. There are 30 different minis to collect.

The response has been nuts. The minis are selling for $5-10 each on ebay and complete sets are selling for a thousand dollars or more.

The promotion has seen a dramatic increase in sales for Coles.

The scale ranges from 1:12 scale to 1:3 scale. There are a handful that are pretty close to 1:6 and these are the ones that I'm interested in. I thought that I could pick up a few cheaply on ebay to use in dioramas but nope; people are going batcrap crazy over tiny pieces of plastic and cardboard. I've bid a couple of bucks each for the ones I want and maybe I'll get lucky. I think I'll have more luck when the craze dies down and people start to unload them cheaply in six months or so.

My daughter has a complete set that I'm seriously considering stealing and selling while the market is hot. Then I'll buy them back cheaply next year.

This is awesome... and frustratingly far away. They look like nice quality work, too. I suppose one of the good (or bad) things is that only some of them are sixth scale or close to it. Smile

That sounds like a really good idea...as long as your daughter approves. Split the proceeds with her.

Shipping overseas from Australia is only $3 for a letter-sized parcel and some of these minis will fit one of these packets. Once the craze dies down I'll have another look at the market and see if I can score some of these more cheaply. If you guys are interested, I'd be happy to try and source these minis at the right price and send them over. I've tried to identify which ones are close enough to 1:6 to be useful to us but they are all pretty cool - even the outsized ones (except for the bananas - they are pretty lame but the right paint job would help a lot).

It is amazing how fast these fads die off. I didn't expect this to happen for another month or two. Ebay prices now average around $3 for each item and a complete set can be had now for around $150. It shouldn't be too long before they are less than $2 each. I'm guessing the price drop is caused by two factors running against each other.

1. People have started to complete their sets so there is less demand.
2. People are seeing how much these minis sold for a week or two ago and are jumping on the band wagon, thus driving up supply and flooding the market.

Looks like my daughter's collection is safe Smile  I think there will be tons of these available at good prices in no time.

I was wrong on the scale of these things. I measured every one in my daughter's collection and the smallest ones, such as the egg carton and the juice bottle, are around 1:6 scale. They go up from there to the tuna can which is around 1:2 scale. The majority are between 1:3 and 1:4. I haven't found full-sized versions of everything yet to confirm, but I think there will be around 8-10 that will be suitable for one sixth work. They will range between 1:5 and 1:6.

Certainly your daughter's relieved, though I hate to see your profits dry up like that.

Still, pretty cool stuff.

What a cool promotion! This type of stuff, when it works in scale, really is a great thing for the hobby. Would love to see some "in use" shots of any of the stuff that did work in scale!

Great to see those are good quality stuff, would really add realism to our dioramas!
The Potato Gems... is it in a heat-sealed laminated foil pack like the real thing?
Or is that hard plastic?

shazzdan

shazzdan
Heat-sealed soft plastic, not mylar. Looks and feels like the real package. There is a piece of foam on the inside instead of individual gems. The daipers, pet food, and chocolate cookies are the same.

Here is the shampoo bottle. I'll post other "in use" shots of the other items that should work in 1:6 over the next week or so.

Man...nicely scaled there.

And, "yes," I laughed.

Anyone here from New Zealand? It looks like a business called "New World" had the same promotion a few years ago. Some of the miniatures in that collection look exactly like the Coles ones except for different labels. From the look of it, these things hold their value pretty well.

Promotion was extended for an additional couple of weeks but it has finally finished. Prices are currently averaging $2-3 each plus postage on Ebay but bulk lots can be had for a little more cheaply. It is the shipping that has stopped me from buying them so far. The only economical way to purchase these things is to buy large bulk lots and there aren't many available yet. I suspect that more will come available in the next few weeks as kids move to the next fad and their parents want to unload all their unwanted plastic.

Some really great stuff. I don’t really have a need for grocery-type items at this point, but it is cool they’re out there.

Hmmm.....I suspect your daughter didn't pop for the groceries each week, so......
Lol.

I love this kind of stuff!

Funny. And that washing machine is really cool.

I wonder if we’ll ever see a decent Q in 1/6...

The only one I know about is Sideshow's and it was pretty ordinary.

The washing machine scene is excellent! Great job, shazzdan! From the photo, Sideshow's Q actually looks pretty neat.
