Introduction: I knew it to be yet another fantasy figure by TBLeague (formerly Phicen), though perhaps not as egregiously sexploitative as some others, and thought I would be able to keep from buying the set. Perhaps I should have. But I didn't. Since this is an entirely fantasy character with little to compare to in terms of (known/recognizable) source evidence, I'm adopting a simpler format and will provide the score for the various categories at the end, following the brief comments and photos.

The figure comes in what appears to be the standard TBLeague packaging, in which the sides of the lid are attached by magnets, and you remove what is essentially a triptych. Some other companies (like DID) print images on the inside that you can use as backdrops for your figure. TBLeague continues to miss this opportunity. Otherwise, the packaging is perfect, with collector-friendly foam treys and nothing out of place. The product box ships inside a cardboard shipper with some information printed on it, and the logo for the product. If you are getting this from another retailer, it will probably be concealed in their shipping box.

Here is the figure as it comes out of the box -- I have only attached the head. So far, so good, everything is functional and it looks like it is supposed to, according to the promotional photos.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar12

The sculpting is exquisite throughout the items that make up the set, from the head sculpt to the detail on the pieces of armor. It is a different matter whether one likes the head sculpt or the style of decoration and detail -- but the quality is top notch, as we have come to expect from TBLeague in this respect. The paint job is also excellent, with both precise fine details (like the eyebrows) and weathered treatment of the armor receiving the specific kinds of attention they deserved. Add to this the finely executed (perhaps too finely for a barbarian!) nordic-looking tattoo on the right (camera left) side of the chest. The head sculpt is a reasonably close match for the skin tone of the body (which is M35, I think), especially in hand, but there it does look a little warmer/darker.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar13

Note the tattoo on the right side of the back of the head. It is also finely executed, if sometimes partly concealed by the hair. The earrings are metal hops which can be adjusted.

The accessories you would have to put on the figure yourself include the molded greaves, the modled vambraces, and the two different molded shoulder guards, as well as a system of three skulls hanging from different leather (or pleather) straps tied together. The vambraces and greaves match with each other, and all these pieces also feature one or more skull design. These are all nicely executed and appropriately weathered, but bother me to no end, in part because of how well they approach realism in all respects but one. The problem is size: except for the main skull on the shoulder guard that goes over the right shoulder, which is oversized, all the skull designs are undersized -- and so undersized that you would have difficulty pretending that even the skulls hanging from the straps belong to shrunken heads. I like my fantasy a little more plausible. The way to do this well, if they were going to be so skull-crazy in the first place, would have been to make any realistic skulls realistically-sized, and the rest a more abstract design, as if they had been carved as decorations out of bone by a barbarian culture. Then there is the single weapon accessory, the axe. It is a very impressive and finely executed piece, no doubt, but utterly preposterous in its design and size. Every aspect of it is implausible or impractical, to the point where it simply doesn't work very well with what is otherwise a relatively realistically proportioned and featured character; if it had been stylized, perhaps it might have been fine.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar15

As far as other wearable accessories go, the helmet is a piece of art. The horns are made to look like bone or possibly wood, with reinforcing meal tips and bands, and a series of helmet plates lines its surface; to the bottom is attached a section of "chain" mail to protect the neck. The front of the helmet is reminiscent of a faux Corinthian style, with a noseguard dividing the opening for the eyes and a narrow slit dividing the lower face over the mouth. While its "chain" mail (like the "chain" mail skirt) is made of a sort of fabric material, the helmet is molded in relatively thin and somewhat flexible plastic, which makes it pretty easy -- and safe -- to slide onto and off of the head. Well done, if quite fantastical. The same cannot be said for the shoulder guards. Besides their questionable visual design (what with mis-sized skulls and oversized spikes), these suffer in terms of functional design. There are four of push buttons sown onto the leather (or pleather) harness worn by the figure, which are supposed to attach to corresponding pieces inside the shoulder guards. While it was difficult enough to attach the hooks and straps of the greaves and vambraces and to slide them over the faux fur sleeves, snapping the shoulder guards onto these push buttons was well-nigh impossible, even after plenty of time and effort. In the end I succeeded in connecting one of each pair of push buttons, which made it possible to take a few photos for the review (by this point I realized that I will never want to use them again after this). I should also point out that the molded pieces of armor have a light, powder blue underside, an unfortunate choice when parts of those are exposed, as you might be able to see in some of the photos.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar16

When I put the cloak on the figure, the spikey shoulder guard unsnapped and I could not get it attached again. What to do with a detached shoulder guard? How about this?

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar17

Or this? Actually either of these looks more plausible than the way it was intended to be used.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar18

But I suppose I will leave it to the side for now. At any rate, here is the figure with the cloak on. It is a tattered cloak with a fur-lined collar area. To put it on you have to remove the head. The cloak features a couple of wires concealed inside it, which can be used to get some positioning for wind or dramatic effect -- but nothing too over the top. The fur on the cloak matches the fur on the rest of the outfit, just like the faux leather of the harness and belt match that of the skirt.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar19

There are a couple of optional extra accessories that come with the set. One is a little package containing three extra straps, I assume for the purpose of replacement if those on which the skulls are attached should break. The other is a molded disk that is supposed to snap onto the ring at the center of the harness over the chest. Once again the concept was fine but the resulting functionality leaves something (a lot) to be desired. While I briefly managed to attach one of the two clasps of the disk onto the harness ring, the other proved too difficult -- especially as I did not want to risk damaging the harness or the TPE flesh in the process. So I gave up and snapped one end of the disk to one of the hoops hanging from the belt/skirt.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar20

I should also mention that the heft of the stainless-steel skeleton body and the relative weight of some of the accessories (though apart from a few hoops there is no additional metal here -- thankfully) help throw the figure off balance more easily than otherwise. Nevertheless, the articulation is largely unrestricted, including that of the shoes, and if the shoulder guards get in the way of the upper arms, I'm sure they will snap off quite easily. The shoulder guards, not arms. Smile This helps the figure assume relatively natural stances and keep relatively good balance. Or as much as can be expected wielding this sort of crazy weapon.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar21

Remember when I was talking about dramatic wind? Well I just realized I had captured it on camera! Smile

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar22

Again, despite the several layers of clothing, the articulation is generally unimpeded. For example, the "chain" mail skirt is slit at the back (concealed beneath a layer of leather and fur -- I assume both of them faux), which allows the upper legs to move sideways or forward/upward with relative ease.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Tblbar23

So while our barbarian hero takes a break (unwittingly demonstrating that he can sit comfortably like a civilized person), let's consider the overall impression this set makes and the scores. If you have less expectation for realism (or rather plausibility) from your fantasy sets, you may be more forgiving. In fact I have so many issues with the visual design that I cannot blame you asking why didn't I just pick up a few parted out pieces and put together as much (or as little) of this as I wanted. Perhaps I thought it would sell out, or perhaps I thought I would like more of it. In fact, I have no major issue with what you see in the "right out of the box" photo, and that could work very well as a base for some kitbashing. The cloak and disk also have a lot of potential, and while the horned helmet is unabashedly fantasy, it is not egregiously implausible for a more ceremonial sort of piece. While beautifully executed, the shoulder guards are not only too fantastical (which is ultimately a matter of personal taste in cases like this) but functionally bewildering; much the same could be said of the greaves and vambraces, but at least those can be put on and will stay on. The axe is impossibly over-the-top for me, but what bothers me more is the absence of additional and alternative weapons -- a barbarian might be expected to be armed to the teeth. Perhaps an alternate, more realistic battle axe would have made sense. But certainly a dagger, some sort of sword, ideally a spear or javelin, maybe a bow and arrows, how about a shield (although I can just imagine what they'll do with that). I realize we cannot really expect to get all that in one set, but we ought to get some of it -- or at least something better than this axe. I suppose I will stop grinding it, except for the score. This will actually look a whole lot better than might be suggested by my complaints about aspects of this set above. One more positive to note is the value. Especially if you do not mind the flights of fancy and only have to worry about the functional problems, you will probably find that $164 (USD) for a higher-end set is actually not at all a bad price these days, when many companies have moved their product (which often has less to recommend it) well above $200.

Introduction

Following up on its release of Barbarian set A (Conan the Destroyer), Mr Toys has just released its Barbarian set B (He-Man). As has already been noted elsewhere, unlike its predecessor, this set is considerably less closely based on a specific film appearance. Thus, do not expect an exact representation of either the action-film He-Man (portrayed by Dolph Lundgren) or of the animated character. It is as if the two were lumped together to produce a generic but realistic figure and given the ARH treatment in terms of detail. The degree to which this is either welcome or disappointing depends on each individual's tastes and priorities. Since there is nothing specific to compare to in terms of accuracy, I am omitting the assignment of specific scores in the various categories discussed below. Note that the set does not include the figure body, but does recommend using TBLeague's seamless super-flexible M35 body (their bulkiest version).

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman012

Packaging

The set comes in a black shoe box-type container with colorful images of the fully assembled set on the top and bottom; on the bottom there is a front and back view of the kitted-out figure, with each piece included in the set labeled. Inside there are a foam trey and foam cover, all in stylish black. Everything is snug and collector-friendly. One disappointment is the absence of any sort of instruction sheet or instructive imagery.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman013

Sculpting

Generally, the sculpting is excellent throughout. The head sculpt is realistic, even if a little generic, and certainly not really spot on for Dolph Lundgren (if that was the target subject). The sculpted detail on the scabbard and greaves is particularly impressive, although it is less so on the belt buckle and, perhaps, vambraces (although here the apparent difference may be due to the choice of design style rather than the quality of execution). The skull-shaped shoulder-guard is very nicely executed, with plenty of sinewy details and pitting. In contrast, the sculpted detail on the harness and shield is less impressive, in part because they went for much cleaner lines that don't seem to match the other pieces very well.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman014

Paint

While the paint application is not poor or sloppy, it is less impressive than the sculpting; in some areas, it probably detracts from it. For example, fairly flat treatment of the the molded detail on the vambraces and the skirt. The relatively simple design of the harness and interlocking links elements does not help the paint, and there is little attempt at weathering on these pieces; the shield feels particularly cheap and unrealistic. On the other hand, some of the armored elements are quite nicely treated, in a way that makes them look realistic, worn, and possibly weathered -- for example, the greaves, belt buckle, scabbard, and skull-shaped shoulder-guard.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman015

Articulation

While the body does not actually come as part of the set, the nature of the fantasy hero outfit offers little impediment to articulation. Still, even divided as it is, the molded skirt is going to make sitting your figure a little challenging, except perhaps if you have him sitting on a backless stool.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman016

Accessories

The line between outfit and accessory can be a blurry one, but I count as accessories the sword, scabbard, and shield. I have had no issues with the sword (which is plastic and light) or shield, but the scabbard has been a bit tricky: there seems to be a way to get the sword to clip into it, but it is not secure; moreover, the method of attaching the scabbard onto the back of the harness with a little rubbery hook (which is part of the harness) is neither particularly easy nor particularly secure. But perhaps I'm overlooking something. That is not a whole lot in terms of accessories, but it is pretty representative of what the character wields; perhaps a double axe would have been a nice addition. There is no action figure stand.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman017

Outfit

The outfit consists of the molded skirt, harness, skull-shaped shoulder-guard, vambraces, greaves, pleather boots, cloth cape, and underwear. The molded skirt is divided into sections, allowing for some additional articulation of the upper legs (through the openings and as the sections can move out of the way more easily). If the skirt had to be molded, this was the way to do it. The harness is made up of several molded pieces; the cross-like chest element is of harder plastic, the interlocking links are of softer, rubbery plastic. Although it looks great, the skull-shaped shoulder-guard has trouble staying in place, since it is strapped on only via a pleather strap across the biceps. The vambraces are a single molded piece each, which makes them easy to use, but look a little less than convincing. The greaves are fastened in place with a couple of pleather straps each. The use of soft, pleather boots was an excellent choice for avoiding any hindrance to the ankle articulation. The foot pegs of the TBLeague body need some help fitting into the openings of the "feet" on the inside of the boots, but heating with a hairdryer should help; the fit is reasonably snug and secure, although you should always take extra precautions with these heftier bodies. The cloth cape does not drape particularly well, but it does have concealed thin wires across the top and sides, which would allow you to pose the cape in appropriate or dramatic configurations; there is no wire across the bottom edge, which is purposefully (though perhaps not very realistically) tattered. The cape is attached by a couple of pleather straps that go over the shoulders, under the armpits, and then across the back; getting this to work was one of the more frustrating parts of my experience with this set, and it still does not look quite right.

Fun Factor

The absence of companion figures in the line is always a limitation here, and the Mondo figures are in a very different style (though you might be able to get away with using Skeletor). On its own, this is still a very decent product, looks good, and it can probably play well enough with others. The not entirely consistent design and paint, however, might make it look just a little out of place next to more realistic pieces based on grittier and more detailed source material. For the more adventurous collector, however, this can be redressed with a modicum of customization.

Value

This set retails for about $100 (USD). This is not cheap, especially considering that the set comes without the body, which is likely to cost (on average) another $80. However, in this day and age, a high-end action figure under $200 is increasingly rare, and fine realistic head sculpts alone often cost over $30 by themselves. I suppose it ultimately comes down to the individual's appreciation of this product as either a(n alternative) portrayal of He-Man, or as a different fantasy warrior, or even as a set of items for kitbashing.

Things to watch out for

I have not had problems yet, but I would be careful with the plastic sword, with the little rubbery hook on the harness, and with the tabs on the harness and belt.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Heman021

Overall

I ended up liking this set more than I thought I would. Perhaps because I am not wedded to a particular representation of He-Man; perhaps because I always considered this something to build up from with some customization and additional pieces. Paired with a good body, the set results in a nice figure that can take dynamic and epic poses. The design seems a little uneven and the paint a little overly clean for my more realistic tastes, but neither is altogether inappropriate for the character's comicbook/cartoon origin.

Introduction
Hot on the heels of the Mr Toys set depicting the same character and actor, Kaustic Plastik has released its Masterclass set based on Arnold Schwarzenegger's role as Conan the Barbarian (and, more to the point, Conan the Destroyer). Both of these recent sets are partly a reprise of the old fantasy barbarian warrior sets by Kaustic Plastik, although both improve, for the most part, what had already been offered (even if providing a more limited selection of items). I will be making frequent reference to the Mr Toys set for comparison purposes, so HERE is the link to my recent review. Since this is not a complete set (it does not come with the recommended TBLeague M35 body included), I am not assigning point values to the various categories. The head for the set is sold separately, but it is also included in this review.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0210

Packaging
The set comes in a transparent plastic lid and trey on a card. The head comes in a typical sixth-scale head sculpt box, well-protected inside foam. Everything is safe and collector friendly, except of course for having to tear the plastic trey off the card.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0310

Sculpting
The sculpted detail on the head and other sculpted or die-cast pieces seems to be generally very good. This is true for the tiny details on the ornate belt and on the imposing sword, but also on the headband, which is a more detailed and accurate rendition of what we saw in the film than its Mr Toys counterpart; the latter, however, had the advantage of being removable. Similarly, the head intended for this set features sculpted/molded plastic hair, whereas the Mr Toys head had "real" hair. Hair this long should never be sculpted, and this applies here. While the detail on the hair is decent, it is nowhere as fine as the gold standard set by Hot Toys and emulated quite successfully by others. The hair and headband appear to be made as separate pieces out of softer plastic glued onto the head proper, just like the recent Hot Toys Aquaman; I feel a custom modification coming up...

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0410

Paint
While the head sculpt appears to be exactly what we see on the promotional images, the paint job on it does not appear as sharp, striking, or attractive (compare HERE). I suppose this is a fairly common problem, but disappointing nonetheless. What we get is still decent, and works well enough with the recommended M35 body, even if it is a little darker than the latter. The eyes are glossy, the cheeks are rosy, the sword finally gets its proper gold-color on the ornate detail. But there are also errors or shortcuts -- the gold color on the sun (or "wheel") pendant appears rather dark, as does the the corresponding color on the sword; more obviously, the decorative elements lining the head band are all painted silverish, whereas they are supposed to alternate between silver and gold (in that respect the Mr Toys set is more accurate).

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0510

Articulation
The recommended TBLeague M35 body is not significantly inhibited in its articulation by either of the two basic clothing options contained in the set, including the long pants, sleeveless leather shirt, and leather armor. Unlike Mr Toys, Kaustic Plastik did not provide an integral foot in the boots, so you will have to improvise: the TBLeague male feet are too big to fit easily in this type of footwear and I had to help myself to some bendy-toe feet from a random base body I happened to have lying around. They fit, but such makeshift solutions always result in less stability, and the top-heavy M35 is often a challenge even for its own feet and ankles; otherwise, the boots allow for excellent range of motion.

Accessories
The set includes a dagger, a sword, their respective leather-like scabbards which can fit onto a belt or baldric, said baldric with a functional buckle, and various other elements that I will cover under Outfit below. The headband, which seems to be as much decorative as functional (protective), is permanently attached to the head sculpt (unlike what we got with the Mr Toys set). The dagger and sword are done in beautiful detail, and look realistic and worn, although the weathering is minimal. They do fit well into their scabbards, but the fit is very tight. The baldric is really intended for the sword scabbard, if you want your character to carry the sword on his back. As a result of good design, both the dagger and sword can hang correctly and realistically, unlike what we have had with earlier versions of the character (for example, the Mr Toys sword will sit too high if you try to "suspend" it from the side of the belt). Finally, there is the sun (or "wheel") pendant, reproduced for the very first time commercially in this scale (to the best of my knowledge). In the movie it hands from a string, centered between two pairs of fangs. The Mr Toys set attempted this, but used the wrong pendant (copying Kaustic Plastik's earlier release) which was also featured in the Conan films but was not hung alongside fangs, and used underscaled and improperly spaced fangs. All this was corrected by Kaustic Plastik in the promotional images (with the correct pendant and nicely scaled and spaced fangs), even if there it was mounted on a thicker leather strap rather than a cord. What we get, however, not only uses this thicker leather strap, but is not correctly mounted to work. The whole piece wants to ride up, the fangs want to sink into the flesh, and the pendant does not quite hang correctly. If you looked carefully at the promotional images, you might realize that what you see there was an ad hoc mock-up that looked about right; what we get in the actual set was their attempt to actually make it work -- but it does not. They should have used a cord, not a band/strap. I can feel another custom coming up... Perhaps it can be expected that one set would not include everything that was included in the two old Kaustic Plastik sets -- for example additional weapons, pendants, pouches...

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0710

Outfit
The set contains enough in the way of outfit to re-create two (or more) different looks from the film -- though one of them cannot be quite right. The most iconic version would be Conan wearing his boots, fur kilt, leather or fabric codpiece, ornate belt, vambraces, and sun pendant and fangs necklace; this look can be reproduced very well indeed with the items that come with the present set. Then there is Conan wearing his boots, pants, leather sleeveless shirt (nice, but lighter than I remember it from the film), and vambraces, paired with either the ornate belt or with a fur kilt, but never (I think) both at the same time. Here we run into a problem, as the new Kaustic Plastik set departs from precedent by combining the codpiece and the belt into a single item. The codpiece is indeed more screen-accurate (it has no identical back side, just attaches to the back of the belt somehow with a strap), but it should not be permanently attached to the belt. It should be noted, that in some scenes different portions of the two basic outfits are swapped into new configurations -- for example pants added to the shirtless look. The smaller fur kilt that comes with the set is the one to be paired with the pants; there are also some tattered barbarian shorts that I do not remember on screen.

A minor problem is that in some scenes Conan appears wearing identical brown leather vambraces with darker straps wound over them. The set features only one of these (for the left arm), the other vambrace is intended to portray the one (for the right arm) covered with a myriad tiny gold-colored spikes. This is poorly recreated with a little leather piece covered rather sparsely by slightly oversized almost flat circular caps. To be screen-accurate, they should have been smaller, pointier, lighter in color, and there should have been many more of them. The present solution does not improve on Kaustic Plastik's old sets, or on the Mr Toys version, all of which are essentially the same. The added problem here is that at least three of the caps flaked off during handling before my very eyes -- and I was being relatively careful, fully expecting this problem. I should note that, aside from this, the set was remarkably free from the usual concerns with flimsy quality that accompany many of the more delicate items included in Kaustic Plastik sets. For the challenge posed by the boots, see above.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0810

Fun Factor
In principle, this could be as fun as any Conan set, with the added advantage of swappable outfits or elements. I was, however, repeatedly annoyed by the poorly-put-together necklace and the weak ankles resulting from the empty foot-type footwear requiring the substitution of non-TBLeague feet.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc0910

Value
When I purchased this, it cost me about $120 for the set and another $50 for the head (USD). A fine, detailed and complex head sculpt like this is not cheap but still not unreasonable at that price. If memory serves, the price of the set is about $40 above the prices of the old Kaustic Plastik sets from several years ago. Even allowing for inflation, we don't get that much more here -- although what we get seems to be better quality, judging by my experience. If this was your only Conan or even one of two (if you get the Mr Toys one), it is still not a huge drain at $170. However, there is a good chance that you can now only find it on eBay for well over $200; without a body, that seems rather much.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc1010

Things to watch out for
Apparently less than with many other Kaustic Plastik sets. I unbuckled and buckled the ornate belt several times, and it is still in good shape. Nothing has come unglued or broken, other than the expected flaking off of caps from the vambrace for the right arm. I would still advise treating this set carefully, especially as you are likely to have a somewhat top-heavy and unstable figure when you kit it out.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Kpmc1110

Overall
I am divided on this set: there is plenty I like and plenty that disappoints me. The better quality and greater attention to detail are definite improvements; the head sculpt is nicely sculpted (though some of it should not have been sculpted) but perhaps not quite as nicely painted (even if not actually bad); the right vambrace is the only thing that is really poorly done, for the third or fourth time. We get accurate details (like the pendant), though not quite accurately mounted and not necessarily usable without further customization. I don't have a problem having to supply a body from elsewhere, but wish they would have thought of the balance and stability issue. And while they did pay attention to plenty of details, they could have gotten the outfit (belt and codpiece ensemble) right, to take proper advantage of the intended versatility of the set. To make the most of this set, you should be ready to do some customizing and/or combining with items from other sets.

Introduction
It seems like this is ancient/fantasy action figure review week, what with the Rome Imperial Army Legionary (HERE) and Centurion (HERE) figure reviews posted earlier, and now my Conan the Barbarian set from Mr Toys finally arrived yesterday. As a fan, it was not something I could easily pass up, although I already own the two fantasy barbarian warrior sets from Kaustic Plastik and was also going to pick up Kaustic Plastik's new Conan set, which is essentially an upgrade on their previous work and a variation of the Mr Toys set. In fact, Mr Toys seems to have redone a version of Kaustic Plastik's old sets with a selection of the items and some new additions, basically trying to replicate Conan's iconic look from Conan the Destroyer (by far the worse of the two Conan Arnold Schwarzenegger films, in my book). The Mr Toys set is available in two variants, one without (A) and one with (B) the TBLeague (Phicen) M35 seamless action figure body. Since I had M35 bodies to spare, I ordered the smaller, less expensive set A. Because this is not a complete action figure set, I am going to simplify the review and not assign point values, while providing as many images as usual. For the M35 body itself, you can check out my detailed review and a zillion images HERE.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt111

Packaging
The set I ordered (without the M35 body) comes in a tidy black rectangular cardboard box with a slip-on cover showing off the product, the Mr Toys logo, and product number. Inside the box there are two black foam treys (always appreciated) with the various items that come in the set stored safely and easy to access. Nothing mind-blowing but certainly neat and collector-friendly.
Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt011

Sculpting
This category includes a number of items, but of course the most focal one is the head sculpt. Mr Toys appears to have used a head sculpt of Arnold Schwarzenegger that seems just a little more youthful than what we usually see, and is therefore appropriate for the film-based character; nevertheless, it features a sufficiently stern expression. This is the first "real" hair Conan head sculpt we have gotten, and that is a big plus in my book. The sculpting on the head appears to be of excellent quality. It is also very well done on the remainder of the sculpted elements: from the soft plastic headband with its ornaments, to the two pendants, to the ornamented over belt, the utilitarian dagger, and the ornately decorated sword. This category leaves nothing to be desired, and although many of the pieces appear to have been copied directly from the old Kaustic Plastik sets, there are also improvements -- including quality (especially durability -- nothing fell apart as I was handling it), the "real" hair head sculpt, the removable head band, the teeth added to one of the necklaces (although they actually go with another pendant that Kaustic Plastike had not yet produced and was therefore substituted with one that they had made, but didn't go with the teeth).

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt113

Paint
In terms of quality, the paint work appears to be excellent. The face looks realistic, the eyes are precisely painted and glossy, the metallic elements -- whether actual metal or painted plastic -- are convincing and precisely executed. Accuracy is a slightly different matter: for example, parts of the sword should have been given a gold or bronze coloring, but like the old Kaustic Plastik set we get the same clean steel look; the leather strings wound round the boots and fur leggins should have been black. There is little in the way of weathering here, except perhaps on the dagger, the buckle on the back of the ornate belt, and the metal pendant. More weathering would have lent the figure's appearance added realism.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt112

Articulation
Technically, since my set was the version that came without a body, there is none; the recommended M35 body (HERE, although M34 would probably work just as well) has pretty much all the articulation you could possibly expect and the rather skimpy outfit does not get in the way much. The boots allow for excellent ankle articulation, making wide stances easy to achieve. It is great that the boots include feet (or perhaps they are integral to them), and these fit well onto the TBLeague body. Nevertheless, the stainless steel plus silicone body is heavy and with a high center of gravity, meaning it is not going to be overly steady on its ankles. Take precautions against the figure toppling over, and perhaps stuff something in to tighten the fit of the ankle peg into the hole inside the boot.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt110

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt016

Accessories
The set includes the following accessories: the metal pendant on a string with four teeth or fangs (inaccurate, both because of their placement and because they were paired with a different, golden sun pendant that is not provided here); the green stone snake cult pendant; the decorated battle (?) headgear with "noseguard", which is tied with string at the back of the head; the dagger which fits into a sheath attached to the belt (it fits well, but perhaps a little too high); the long sword which comes with its own sheath with imprinted design and has a couple of hooks on its back, allowing it to hang from either the decorated belt (again, rather too high) or to attach to a leather-like belt that goes across the chest and back and is buckled on the front. There are several other items, but I am keeping covering them under Outfit below. The accessories are of high quality in terms of durability and execution, but again not always entirely accurate (most notably the pendant paired with the teeth/fangs necklace or the lack of gold treatment on the decoration of the sword).

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt012

Outfit
The outfit is minimal, but that is the look we saw on screen for most of Conan the Destroyer. There is a furry (wolf- or bear-skin?) kilt, held in place by leather thongs (called "leather pants" in the product description), over which goes the wide belt decorated with "metal" strips and a dragon crest in the middle; all this is very well executed. The lower arms are protected by a couple of vambraces. On the right lower arm there is a brown leather vambrace with gold- or bronze-colored round studs (which represents the much more numerous and more closely set spikes in the film -- the simplification is carried over the old Kaustic Plastik set). On the left lower arm there is a black leather vambrace with thongs, held together by velcro (I'm not sure it should have been quite black as opposed to dark brown, except perhaps for the thongs wound over it; and it should have been made a little wider to allow a more comfortable fit). Finally, there are the brown leather boots with grey fur trim on the top, and brown leather straps (should have been black or much darker brown leather) wound around both boot and trim. These constantly move out of place and require some futzing to get halfway right; nevertheless they do not fall apart like those in the original Kaustic Plastik set, which is a relief.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt017

Fun Factor
The absence of other character from the Conan films does not help, but nevertheless, the fairly complete outfit and accessories makes this a fun set. This is augmented by the excellent articulation potential and by the quality and durability of the items included in the set. Still, not something you would want careless children to mess around with.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt013

Value
The set I bought, without the M35 body included, retails for anywhere between around $85 and $100 (USD), often with shipping included, if you're buying on eBay from China. This is not exactly cheap, but it is not horrendously more than the price of the old Kaustic Plastik sets from years back, partly reprized by Mr Toys. If you are buying the set with the M35 body included, the price jumps to closer to $180, but that includes the $80+ for the body. Overall, the price is not inconsiderable, but also not horribly exaggerated compared to earlier and similar practice. But of course if you are buying multiples, or also looking forward to picking up Mr Toys' He-Man set and Kaustic Plastik's new and improved Conan set, the costs will add up.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt018

Things to watch out for
If you are treating the figure with the usual amount of care appropriate for high-end collectibles of this type, there should be little or nothing to worry about. As I mentioned, the figure can be a bit top-heavy and lose its balance, so take precautions about that. I do worry that the little round metallic studs on the leather vambrace on the right hand might fall off, as they did with the Kaustic Plastik version, but on the whole the quality seems to be better, so perhaps it should less of a concern.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt014

Overall
All told, this is a very good set. It is not perfect (occasional mistakes with the pairing and painting of accessories, etc), but it is fairly complete as far as what we can associate with this look of the character, and it is durable and beautifully executed. Don't get me wrong: I love the old Kaustic Plastik stuff, and between their two sets, you do get more than you get here; however, I am weary and wary of everything I touch coming apart in my hands, and Mr Toys' set is like a breadth of fresh air in that respect. Moreover, with the new head sculpt, the "real" hair, and the removable headband, we get some real and unprecedented improvements in terms of the selection, functionality, and appearance of the items making up the set. I am very pleased overall, and I think most others who go for this set will be too. One should note that it looks like the new Kaustic Plastik set will correct some of their earlier mistakes and omissions (including some carried over into the Mr Toys set) -- but the new Kaustic Plastik set is much more expensive, does not include a body, and features a beautiful but one-piece sculpted head (the hair and headband are part of the head sculpt).

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures Conmt015

Where to buy?
This is a tough one. Most outfits carrying these here in the States have long sold out their pre-orders, although it is to be expected that they might get some additional sets. I don't like to pre-order, but when I saw so many venues sold out, bit the bullet and pre-ordered from GianToy (you can do so directly or via eBay). If you want one and haven't pre-ordered it, check where you would usually check (just in case), or look on eBay.

For comparison purposes, here are a couple of photos of this set alongside my custom Conan the Barbarian (also based on the appearance in Conan the Destroyer) and the much more loosely-inspired "Conanesque" figure.

DARKCROWNTOYS 3rd anniversary 1/6 scale original design collectible figure series Burning Souls in all new ancient mechanical armor.

Incorporated ancient armor, mechanical elements and mystic symbols into the design, the ¡°Burning Souls¡± series is feast of the eyes that is totally different from other releases.

Crimson, the first character in the series, is inspired by the traditional Red Oni (devil) in Japanese culture. The fierce looking headsclupt represents the formidability and meanace of a Red Oni. Both face mask and body armor are removable to review mechanial details inside. Real fur has been used for the hair to enhance realism and easy for collectors to create different looks as they prefer.

A solid and form body is used to go with the majestic armors, which includes multiple removable armor parts (face mask, armors of chest, belly, back and forearm) to reveal the detailed mechanical parts inside. The removable armors allow collectors to showcase different setting of the character, which was designed with a delicate balance between brutality and finesse.

To present the design in accordance to Kevin’s vision of how the ¡°Soul-Maker¡± create the armor as described in the original story, a massive 40cm tall diorama background and stand was created, and comes with mystical spells, mechanial arms and openable comparments for collectors to store all the small parts.

Weapons include the tradional weapon of Red Oni, the ¡°kanab¨ ¡±, an original design version of it called ¡°Thunder Strike¡± by Kevin, plus an original design large blade called ¡°Demon’s Tooth¡±.

Other accessories include a right forearm armor that could sumon lightning (interchangeable with the original designed armor), ¡°Demon Bomb¡± with a mini-Red Oni in the traditional look of tiger skin cloth sitting in it, controlling the weapon of mass destruction and aid Crimson¡± in battle. Kevin has also specially designed a ¡°Soul-Pipe¡± for the character, which comes with special smoke effect parts to breathe life into the character.

Like all other DARKCROWNTOYS’ productions, lots of devilish details in the work, to come with this first release of an all new series, Kevin has included a secret bonus in the box set await you fans to discover by yourselves.

A few days after the New Year day Lady Death finally decided to open her Christmas present.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures 2v2EetDWGxAChVkHosted on Fotki
{Heather} Here you go Boss the refreshment you requested, is there anything else I can do for you before I leave?

{Lady Death} No that should be all for now.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures 2v2EetDqVxAChVkHosted on Fotki
{Lady Death} Wait there is something you can do for me please go up to my apartment suite and get that Christmas present that
Goddess Athena gave me, I think I left it on the dresser, I guess it's time I do something with that thing?

{Heather} Sure thing boss, I'll be right back.

{Lady Death} Caroline would you please come here.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures 2v2EetDdCxAChVkHosted on Fotki
{Lady Death} As you already know Goddess Athena gave out those very special magical gifts last year to everyone and from what I heard
everyone was ecstatic with their gifts.

But I don't know what to ask for? I already have everything I could ever want or need, so what should I ask for? A person can only use so many
custom 747s, Learjets, yachts, stretched Rolls Royce limousine. I found dozens and dozens of transport wagons ladened full of gold silver and
precious gems in storage vaults from that last person that ran this Command Center. (Warlord Xena)

{Caroline} Well if you can't think of any thing you really want maybe you could use you present to help someone less fortunate?

{Lady Death} That is an excellent idea, I knew I could count on you, you may go now.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures 2v2EetDNWxAChVkHosted on Fotki
{Lady Death} Put the tray on that table and than take my gift and place it on the floor before me and stand way back.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures 2v2EetD8qxAChVkHosted on Fotki
{Lady Death} Well ok lets try this thing out, what I really want is muscular personal assistant like Starsha or Sasha for Heather.

A brilliant flash of light and a huge gray clouds and many explosions.

Topics tagged under warrior on OneSixthFigures 2v2Eetg3CxAChVkHosted on Fotki

{Lady Death} WHAT THE . . .!!! Well that didn't go as well as I planned but you will do anyway, Well hello there I'm Lady Death and Welcome to
the Command Center, you will be Heather new personal assistant from now on, she's the one off to your right, and who might you be?

{Hercules} You may call Hercules and I'm the son of Zeus, so is this a Command Center of Valkyries or have you women finally
done away with your men altogether???

To be Continued

Thank You for looing

Here’s wishing you a happy prosperous fun filled joyful and fortunate new year ahead. Happy New Year!

To everyone here on OSF - May you live long and prosper! And big thank you to GubernatorFan, RogerBee and Stryker2011!

Should Old Acquaintance be forgot,
and never thought upon;
The flames of Love extinguished,
and fully past and gone:
Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold,
that loving Breast of thine;
That thou canst never once reflect
On old long syne.

Thank You for looing
