So, I'm hoping to enlist some help, maybe from someone with a bit more construction knowledge than me.  I'm working on a 1/6 garage, and wanted to add a chain and pulley hoist set-up from an overhead beam.  I've got some pulleys ordered that look like they'll do the job, but I can't figure out what to use for a hook.  I believe the technical term is a grab hook, maybe a hoist hook, (I've been googling stuff, but I don't really know what I'm talking about) but I'm looking for anything that would make sense for this type of project.  All the real ones seem like they're that chunky design, flat with beveled edges, and any hooks I can think of using don't seem right.  Any suggestions for something I could make work in 1/6?

Search for RC car winch, and you might be able to find something that would work.

Man, you guys are the freakin best. Saw this, but do you think it's big enough for like a big industrial one, like in a garage?

Does 0.79" seems a bit small for 1/6?

Yeah, that would probably be too small. Particularly if you’re thinking of hoisting a 1/6 engine.

Glad to know I'm thinking along the right lines. I honestly wasn't sure. Well out of my realm of expertise. I'm thinking something 1-2 inches would be about right?

Well, what you could do is see if you can’t find the measurements for a 1:1 winch hook, then make one the appropriate size. 2” sounds pretty big unless you plan on using it for a crane with a boom arm. I’ve seen engine blocks hoisted up with a hook about 5-6” long in real life. I guess it depends on what you’re trying to represent.

So it sounds like 1" or a little over would be ideal. I really appreciate the help. I'm also keeping an eye out for kids' toy trucks. I feel like I've seen them with oversized hooks that I could imagine doing the job. Also, if I can actually leave work on time tomorrow, there's an RC car shop in town I'll swing by, and see what they have. And if all else fails, I'll take a crack at sculpting, although that's the least preferred.

You need a hook that is the equivalent of 2'? I don't think I've ever seen anything that big?

I think your calculations went the other way. A 1" sixth scale hook would be equivalent to a 6" real hook. 2" at sixth scale would be a 1 foot real hook, which isn't entirely out of line. The garage I'm building look like a pretty big 2 story industrial space (the diorama itself is 4' wide x 3' tall x 2' deep) so it's conceivably from some sort of leftover industrial equipment, and would be a bit larger than what you would get in a household garage.

I got some pulley's in the mail today, and I can't wait to paint and weather them up! I've actually been working on pieces for this set for a really long time, and I'm so close to finishing it up. The hook is literally the last piece of the puzzle (although I'm sure I'll continue to add tools and details over time). As soon as it's done, I can start getting pics, and I am DYING to share. So excited for this one.

I am so psyched to show you all what I'm working on. I am so close to finishing this, and it's going to open up so many photoshoots!

Oh man, I just found and ordered 3 of that King Kong XL hook TODAY!!!! From that same spot too. Thanks though. Just need to wait for it to arrive, which is gonna kill me. I've been working on this project on and off for like a year, so this piece is all that's between me and finishing. Having to pump the breaks this close to the finish line is just making me nuts! But I'm so glad to have found it.

BadWolf, I encourage it. There are tons of tricks at work in there that I've been picking up from others for years. This hobby is all about learning from each other, and anything I can pass along is a win for us all.
