B11012 WW1British Officer – Colonel Mackenzie

Brief Introduction
After waiting for half year, the WWI British Army can be teamed up now. Welcome the WWI British Officer – Colonel Mackenzie.

Wearing either the WWI British officer visor cap or Brodie helmet, Colonel Mackenzie is well dressed in highly-detailed khaki officer uniform and breeches. A beige trench overcoat just cover on top and his feet was wrapped by the beautifully made genuine-leather officer boots. He looks strict and a scar just crosses his left eye.

He is equipped with officer’s sword and Webley Mk VI revolver. The sword guard is beautifully carved. And there is a bayonet with scabbard for the revolver.

The shoulder straps, belt, binoculars case, compass case, ammo pouch, holster, sword hanger and canteen carrier are all made of genuine leather.

WWI British infantry Lance Corporal William is waiting for his officer. Just take him home to build up your WWI team.

While I don't collect a ton of military figures -- this entire thing is absolutely gorgeous. All the clothing and accessories, the desk diorama (but would have to get their earlier trench dio to go with it), and the detail on his damaged eye. It is so magnificent.

Wow, this is stunning. I absolutely loved this movie, too. Just an all-around gorgeous figure and accessories.

I agree, absolutely gorgeous set, with so much in the way of detailed accessories. And we know DID can deliver, even with the head sculpts (which may have their own peculiarities but tend to be masterfully made these days).

Available for pre-order at monkeydpot.com

Figure: $189.99 USD
War Desk diorama: $119.99
Figure with desk: $299.99

It is truly an impressive figure and diorama.

But... I cannot help but hear the Blackadder Goes Forth theme in my head. I want this figure with either a Hugh Laurie or a twitchy Tim McInnerny head sculpt.

Another figure from 1917.

Looks very good.

DiD really go to town with their sets. They provide so many options they must expect to sell doubles to a lot of customers.

ahbake

DID are definitely kings of military figures... amazing set.

Hang on -- I get it that the overall figure brings the movie 1917 to mind, which is the most recent prominent reiteration of WWI, but aren't they going for a Benedict Cumberbatch here (who wasn't in 1917)? Or was there an actor in 1917 whom this is actually supposed to be (my memory has already faded)?

I agree with all the positive quality comments, DID excels at these. The details are great but better yet there is a genuine authentic look, feel and mood.

Benedict Cumberbatch played Colonel Mackenzie in 1917.

Well, that explains it, thanks.  I knew my memory was iffy but I checked IMDB and didn't see him listed.  For some reason he doesn't show up in the "main" first 18 actors and not listed until you click on Full Cast and Crew, and then he's listed 48th.  Don't know what that's about.

Interesting that DID go so far as to use the actual character name, even though the figure must be unlicensed, or they'd be referencing the actual movie.

I watched the film a while back, and thought it was fairly boring and depressing. I just skipped through it again to remind myself of where Cumberbatch appears, and it looks like its only near the end - he's the officer the soldier's been trying to get a message to the whole film.

He wasn't wearing a sword, so DiD may have taken liberties to make the figure representative of an officer as well as being able to double as Benedict in the film.

The photo of him on horseback was supposed to be from 1917, but I didn't spot that scene. Also looks like his cuff badges are different.

skywalkersaga

skywalkersaga
Yeah, in the movie he only shows up at the very end.

I didn't find the movie to be boring or depressing at all. I thought it was beautifully shot and very moving. But I then I tend to approach the subject of WWI from less of a military history standpoint and more from a human interest standpoint. I'd also just finished re-reading the Tolkien biography 'Tolkien and the Great War' right before watching it, which probably influenced how I viewed the subject matter of the film. It was more like watching Sam and Frodo trying to make it through Mordor or something rather than some kind of straight-up action movie.

ETA: Oh, and I think the second film still Asta posted is actually Benedict Cumberbatch in the film War Horse (2011). Perhaps easily confused since BC has been in quite a few WWI-themed films (he was also in the miniseries, Parade's End, another one of my faves).

This is really impressive.
DiD have a long track record of easily avoidable mistakes in their military figures, but so far I haven't seen any, apart from the fact that the cap badge goes on the band and not on the crown of the cap.
And the amount of kit supplied is really nice , even without the diorama set.
Swords were very rare indeed at the Front by 1917, but it will be a handy thing to have .The tailoring is also excellent, and I just hope the production figures are as good.
Might have to buy one of these.

I'd also just finished re-reading the Tolkien biography 'Tolkien and the Great War' right before watching it, which probably influenced how I viewed the subject matter of the film. It was more like watching Sam and Frodo trying to make it through Mordor or something rather than some kind of straight-up action movie.

There are descriptions in LOTR that really do sound like those of the battlefields of the Great War.

The film struck me as a low key horror film, especially when they set out on their mission, travelling through quiet and desolate places. It was low key, small scale, and eerie. The budget limitations added unreality in a more practical sense too, and I couldn't get interested enough in the characters to feel that engaged.

I find the Great War depressing in general. My mum's dad, who was in the Middlesex Regiment, was so appalled by what he witnessed that he was a conscientious objector during the Second World War.

On the other hand, my dad's dad, who was in the Royal Horse Artillery and had a reputation for getting into fights, relished the war. It didn't seem to affect him, even though he talked about cutting the horses loose after bringing the guns into position, and they would run off in terror and get tangled up in barbed wire.

During the Second World War he was a captain in the Home Guard near Southampton.

That makes sense.

I am finding the release patterns for these figures increasingly curious. Most online retailers, as of today, still list the MacKenzie figure as a pre-order, yet a number of online and eBay sellers are already offering parted out uniforms and accessories. Some indicate "extended shipping time" for the parts, indicating they are not yet in hand. Others seem to suggest the parts are in stock.

It looks like Giantoy may have the complete figure in stock.

Has anyone here at OSF pre-ordered this figure (as of mid-January 2022)? Has anyone received this figure or any of the individual pieces?

Or, because this figure was announced six months ago, has everyone moved on to the new upcoming releases? Are these announced figures forgotten before they ever see the light of day? I realize OSF is not really a "military figures" forum, so perhaps there is not a lot of interest in complete figures of this type.

I POd the Deluxe thru Timewalker, and it’s been showing as Imminent Arrival for awhile. It wouldn’t surprise me if Asian retailers have it, but due to shipping backlogs it gets here when it gets here.

I didn't order this, but I've seen parted out pieces for at least a couple weeks, so I think it's released at least in Asia. I'm sure it will take a little longer to reach the US retailers.

Does anyone remember a television miniseries that was broadcast a few years ago called Flambards? Originally an ITV production from the UK, it ran on PBS in the States.

I'm asking because the Colonel MacKenzie figure, in hand, reminds me of one of the Flambards characters, Mark, when he returned from the trenches of the Great War, mad from shell-shock:

Of course, it's been a while since I saw the program, so my recollection may not be entirely accurate. Nevertheless, in my action figure universe, MacKenzie shall henceforth be known as Flambards!

I never saw that series myself. (I received mine, as well, and the desk set up; just haven’t had the time to do anything with it — not looking forward to having to deal with all that insignia; my one not about these military figures is having to put all that tiny stuff on the uniforms.)

I usually don't even bother with all those little insignia. I know the ribbons and stars and eagles and "pips" are important to military uniform hobbyists, but I find those little pieces too fragile and fussy to mess with when my primary use for figures is as characters in photo-stories. This figure includes lots of belts and holsters and things; it will be a job to assemble it properly.
