Mad Scientist Gadgets

Remarkable imagination...  

These are all spectacular!  Such ingenuity regarding design concepts of fantastically intricate gadgetry and contraptions.  I truly find the fictional to be infinitely more compelling than anything in reality, in that one has no directional reasoning by which to guide the senses; rather, only Creativity, in all its purity!

Great use of that pendant, Shazz.  I have purchased several of the sort, myself, after having discovered an endless array of available designs.  I’d reckon that you paid but pennies for that piece, quite literally.

I actually find this the hardest thing. I'd prefer to have something to copy rather than trying to create something from scratch. I would not have even thought of doing these without the above Etsy examples. I'd prefer a proper plan and definite direction, which is easier when I have something to copy. Usually I like to design something beforehand but with these things I can't because I don't know what components I'm going to use. I end up sticking a few bits of wood together and letting it flow from there. Some of the above gizmos took months to finish because I had the equivalent of "writer's block". I'd set them aside and work on other projects while my subconscious stewed on the problem.

Instead of sticking things directly on the gizmo, they look better if stuck on small riveted panels.

I make them from popsicle stick offcuts.
1. Cut them to size.
2. Bevel the edges.
3. Stick on some 2 mm rhinestones to simulate riveting.
4. Paint them
5. Stick on the components

I agree, the work applied in layers adds significant dimension - and consequently, realism (and considering that the gadgetry and gizmonomy are entirely fantastical only makes the latter that much more profound).

These panels look fantastic. And you're right, that extra dimensional layer adds a ton to a build. Something I need to keep in mind when working on these types of components. And just building a bunch you can later add to projects is a smart way to work.

I like it. It would work well side by side with Pontiacivan's custom robots or the Star Trek original series figures, among various others.

I wish I had some stuff like that to make a doc Emmett Brown laboratory!
