I always love these sets and these are no exception. That said, even if these are macro photos, the level and quality of detail does not seem to be quite the best.

I think the lower quality is sort of the point — as a way to get people who can’t, or won’t, fork over $400-500 for the better quality and far more elaborate others that they make.

That may well be true. I haven't checked the prices on these, but I did notice that they are making at least some characters who have been made before (probably with some variation in appearance, although I honestly do not recall). The ones that rang a bell for me were Tokugawa and Oda, who are major historical figures (whether their depiction is even remotely accurate to some early source, I have not checked). At any rate, this might be an attempt at less expensive collectibles depicting them.
