Project - (inspired by) 'The Female' from the movie Under The Skin (2013) Flocki10
LOADING: Image(s)

Not an absolute copy of a character from a movie, but a character heavily inspired by a character from a movie.

The top shot shows 3 photo's..
1. Portrait de_haired and painted.
2. Portrait with black hair attached.
3. Portrait with black hair cut to a shorter length.

The white face paint ended up the way it did for various reasons.
The original plan was not to have the face quite as white as it turned out.

-

The bottom shot shows a process known as Flocking
Today i Flocked something (some boots) for the 1st time.
As i type i am waiting 24hrs for the glue to set 100%
To be honest, i am a little disappointed, as the black felt finished i wanted looks no where near as dense as planned.
It is what it is, an experiment.

I’m curious to see the flocking. I’ve thought about doing that type process for shorter hair.

I thought the felt flakes would cover the glue 100% a result in a suede finish.
Instead, the result looks like black leather with about 20% hair on it. A low density suede.
Maybe i was not quick enough applying the flock to the glue, although i was pretty quick.
Maybe i should have pushed the flock into the glue as i applied it, although i did not think that was the idea behind flocking.

I will post some pic's of the flocked boots later, and try and capture the results.

WOW! I seriously LOVE the final look of that head! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the figure emerge. Smile

And while I have never done it and therefore have no clue: I do think pressing the flock into the glue would help. Otherwise I would think that there is too much air between the... particles, resulting in too little contact with the glue. If at first you don't succeed... ^^

Thanks.. I am no painter.
Applying black paint around the eye's and the eye-brows reminded me of how unsteady my nerves are when it comes to small details.

The boots, they will stay they way they turned out, as i do not think it is a good idea to apply more flock glue over the flock.

Agree with Diana, I like looking at that head. I'm all for custom heads these days! Even if it's indeed very white, it looks very cool and interesting.

Great work on the face repaint! This was a Scarlett Johansson head? After the pale repaint, the hairpiece change, and the haircut, she looks very different ... more Kate Beckinsale/Underworld Selene than Scarlett. I'm curious what the final character will look like.

Interesting transformation of that head sculpt. I agree it has a bit of a Selene look now.

Flocking is a very tricky technique and unless you’re using industrial tools, it definitely takes more than one coat! I know you can buy ‘static grass applicators’ for doing realistic groundcover on model railway layouts and dioramas which utilise a static charge to get the flock to lie smoothly, but shaking it on like seasoning can work well too.

I found this step by step guide by a model horse customiser who specialises in the medium - it’s spread over several posts so apologies for all the links 😂 Obviously I doubt you’ll want your shows to be dapple grey but it’s a good guide for applying different layers and things.

It was very simple painting the head white. The difficult part was keeping the white away from the eye's and mouth, and touching in the eye-brows afterwards, and around the eye's.

I watched a number of videos on YouTube
Instead of using expensive machinery, one user used 2 cups joined by a rubber glove to pump the flock over the glue.
Another user used a type of inexpensive manual pump.
Me, i used a sieve inside a plastic container, to stop the flock dust going everywhere.

Original boots (top)
Flocked, strapped and studded upgrade (bottom)

I could add more flock, but i think i will pass. Besides, i wanted less than perfect boots (used)

NOTE: If you consider picking up these boots be warned. Phicen / TBLeague feet fail to fit into them.
I also tried smalled feet, no luck. My solution was to fill the boots with Fimo (clay) and cut the feet down to just the ball-joint holders,
and insert those into the boots, and resting on the Fimo

Thanks. The only issue with Fimo is i didn't dare risk cooking the boots in the oven. Fimo uncooked is fairly solid.
I will probably have to make use of a crotch grabber style base.

From this angle, something about the eye's and mouth remind me of Juliette Lewis
The white face takes me back to the Rock band Kiss

Updates..

The hair style / cut has been worked on some more.

Upper chest area has been made to look whiter / lighter (than Phichen pale - which looks pink)
Thanks to GubernatorFan for the help offered.

Bright / Dark / Pink top added. I went for this top as the color was correct and the v-neck shape was ideal.
In an ideal world the top would have sleeves and be made from different fabric.
Since the plan is to add a jacket, the lack of sleeves is not a issue.

I have 2 jackets on order. One is black, one is patterned. Neither is accurate to the source material,
although i am more aiming for the vibe of the character. I have a feeling the black jacket just might work better.
For the moment i have my fingers crossed that the jacket sleeves are longer enough to cover the wrist joints.

I agree about the likeness to Juliette Lewis. You can either repaint the head some more or recolor the body. More specifically about making a body paler, there is this thread, with two versions and a look at the pastels:

The plan is to leave the body as is Smile
I could always swap out the portrait for another one (with less white) in the future.
At the same time, i do like the over white face, as it gives the impression of a being who is not quite up to scratch when it comes to dressing like an Earth based female.
