The paint job on the gamorean guard is just excellent !

Oh, look . Your Alien guys work with the Face App. If it is allowed ? Wink

It is totally allowed! Thank you for bringing more life into my images. I wish you had done that to my New Years message photo, as the attendees at the bar looked a little sullen despite my mediocre graphics software-based attempt to make them smile. Smile I'm delighted you like the customs, and I'm working on more as I type. Looking forward to see what you do with that character you liked.

Agree - ok I think SOME creatures in SW universe are a bit over the top weird, but yeah, Ians guys here are excellent.
I also caved in yesterday and ordered Kuiil from super sales on kghobby. I think the size and the outfits are awesome for bashes too.

Thank you again, Simon, glad you like them. Looking forward to see what you do with Kuiil. I got him too, parted out, but haven't done anything with him. In fact, I have a human head on the body, since I was considering using him as a dwarf character.

Oh you must show him with that human head! He has a great size for a dwarf! bounce

I thought of making a Goblin Artificer for DnD out of him. Still looking for good heads on 3D printing sites.

Haha! The smiles look awesome on those heads! Very Happy

Thanks for the encouragement, Simon. I don't know if he will stay with that head on, or if I would reconstitute the SW character, or create something entirely different, but I posted a few photos in my Various Photos thread. Hope you have fun.

They do, don't they? Thanks to Ephiane.

Part IV - May the Fourth Be With You!

Earlier this year I got the next shipment from my 3D guy, Poison3DHarleyCstms on Etsy, and this prompted me to push forward with the project, working both on the new arrivals and some pieces I already had. Keep in mind that this is still very much a work in progress.

One thing I hadn't done before was painting or putting together the weapons. There are a couple each of blaster pistols, and three different types of pole-like weapons, including vibro-axes and halberds. There was concern about warping during the 3D printed process, so the poles were mostly realized with wooden skewers; even so some of the 3D-printed parts were still slightly warped, but I think they still work, especially given the beaten-up look we are going for. Which was purposefully weathered oily-steel with some touches of bronze or brass for either specific elements or to convey staining and rust. You see them unpainted, primed, and mostly finished below.

I also painted and weathered the breastplate that came with Klaatu/Wooof (in the previous installment). This was before giving them some additional weathering. There were also the two axes for the Gamorrean Guards, for which see farther below.

Additionally, I painted some more heads (three of them new), hands, and companion pieces. The newcomers were Barada D (a fourth rendition of a Klatoonian), Ree-Yees (with neck), and Nikto C (a third rendition of a Red Nikto with a helmet and shoulder armor). The first three images below show them unpainted, primed, and given a first coat of paint.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg0110

Weequay is the same sculpt as before, but this is a new paint application, slightly more subtle. The dressed up figure is largely the most basic of mock-ups, and neither the final look nor screen accurate. The head will have braids coming out from the back.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg0410

Klaatu A/Wooof was painted for the last installment, but here he is with his finished breastplate. On the screen-accurate final version, this would be partly obscured by a half-jacket.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg0510

Barada D (or is it his cousin Kithaba?) is a new head, accurately sculpted with the ridges on top of the head, but they are rather understated compared to Barada B (unlike the smooth Barada A and C; I added ridges to the latter in the previous installment). This time around, I purposefully avoided using true green, still achieving a greenish effect with mostly other colors. The finished look would need a head scarf.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg0610

Nikto B is the same as a head sculpt shown in the previous installment, but here painted up differently. The finished look would require a headgear.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg0710

Nikto C is a new head sculpt, which came together with its helmet and shoulder armor. I added fur to the helmet, but it also needs a neck flap. The shoulder armor will have straps.

Ree-Yees is new, a bit of a grail for me -- the design is not brilliant, but he was one of the most recognizable aliens among Jabba's goons. The head comes with its specific neck pieces and hands. As with the others, the outfit is a placeholder, merely indicating the general aspect (in this instance, color); for example, the black kimono should be a padded jacket with longer sleeves. The accessory, one of my painted blaster pistols, is about right, although it is held very precariously.

Some group shots of the above goons, again, outfits are placeholders and not finalized.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg1210

I also got around to painting my second Hasbro Gamorrean Guard (for the "before" look see Part II above). As with Barada D, I went for a subtler paint job, avoiding true green and creating a greenish effect with other colors. The new porkster got the smaller axe and is consistently photographed on camera right. Both axes got repainted and weathered.

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg1310

The Gamorrean guards also got a couple of halberds (if that's what these are) to bar Luke's way. They don't hold them very well, and they are not as fine as the Sideshow version (which I don't own), but they do the job.

One more for the road:

Gubernator's various new Star Wars customs (updated 27 September 2024) - Page 4 Jg1510

I hope this is useful or even entertaining. Perhaps it would encourage someone to try a similar project of their own.
As always, what do you think?

COOL!! Looks like you've been having loads of fun with great results! Did you know the blasters were actually break barrel air pistols with the front sights mounted upside-down? I have the same problem with my Gamorreans not being able to hold their pikes effectively...always dropping them! LOL. Great paint apps!!

Beautiful project, Star Wars Alien costumes always had their charm. Your paint jobs really do them justice.

I remember printing one of those Stargate Jaffa Sticks for someone, also using wooden poles, as printing would have been a waste of time and resin.

But yes some serious warping going on on some parts. I think the lift/retraction speed of the printing platform might have been too high here. It makes the prints go faster and saves time to have a faster lift/retraction speed - but the print layers are pulled off the plate less gently while still soft and vulnerable, increasing the risk of warping.
Also the first few millimeters are more prone to distortion, I'd always use higher rafts and supports of 5mm+ height before starting with the actual item.

This might sound like technobabble I just made up.

Anyway I am glad you found a 3d print guy, i haven't been very reliable haha.

Really great paint jobs, especially heads.
But 3D-printed weapons and props look realistic too.

Good call with the wooden skewers. I had issues with warping on many of my thinner 3D prints.

I love that Ree-Yees. A really eye-catching figure.

Thank you very much, Alex. I'm glad you liked them. I had no idea about the blasters.

Thanks for stopping by, Ovy, and for your kind words and support. Good idea you specialists have had about the wooden poles, saves a lot of material, effort, and trouble. I wonder if I would have thought of it, had I not been told. The pole weapons, unfortunately, still had enough printed parts for some warping to happen and be detectable, but on the whole I think it is not excessively obvious -- still, I chalk it up to wear and tear and Tatooine heat. Smile
He has his limits, too, the Death Star laser cannon was too much for him too.

Thank you, I hope you can use this trick. I wish we had gone ahead and divided some of the pieces that were printed together, but I think it turned out alright overall.
I love Ree-Yees, too. Like I said, a fairly wacky design, but rather distinctive, so I had to have him in there. Was really grateful when my 3D guy found a usable model, and it turned out so good.

Yet another topic I'd have to bookmark and revisit when there's more time. I like the painted 3d prints a lot. I realize they are not finished yet, but your characters are coming alive in this last update. Reeyees "stripping" made me laugh out loud.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm very happy you liked them. As for Ree-Yees, I see what you mean, but you know why I did it: had to show that separate neck piece that fits over a normal neck.

Thank you very much, Mark, I'm delighted that you like them. Not least because you know a thing or two about those characters. Speaking of which, if you need more of them, now you know where you can get them, as my guy can always print more of these pieces.
Just today I received the cloth I've ordered, so I should be able to make some inroads into the outfits soon.

Nice use of the 3D printer technology, making so many "missing" characters for your main collection topic.
You dis an awesome job in assembling and painting. I like the qeapons.

Thank you very much, Simon, I appreciate it and am very glad you like them, work in progress as they are. Credit for the 3D printing goes to my go-to 3D guy Matt (Poison3DHarleyCstms on Etsy), who now has his own domain. Of course, over there, you've got Ovy who is an absolute master.

Thank you, Diana, I'm delighted you like them. I've been getting plenty of advice from my resident graphic designer (Mom!) on not using true green, so I took it more to heart this last time around. The weapons and "metal" bits, I feel, had to look imperfect, worn, and oily. Life has been a bit hectic, slow progress, but there will be another update.

Thank you very much Ralf, I appreciate it, and am glad you saw them. Well, they are alien faces and eyes, so I suppose it was a little bit easier than getting human ones right, but I hope I am getting a bit better with practice.

Gosh, as soon as I saw these photos I was immediately taken back to 1977 to the original Star wars movie, and I can hear the upbeat music that was played in the cafe/bar scene that was full of odd characters. I still have my Star Wars coloring-in book, but these days it's so much easier to collect pieces from the whole saga. Thanks for posting the pics.

Thank you very much, Paul, I appreciate this, and am happy it inspired a little trip down memory lane for you. I love the Jabba goons, and that's what I have been collecting, but my 3D guy Matt has a ton of (other) Cantina aliens too. I don't know how sensible shipping to NZ would be, but you can reach him at the link I've posted above.

The painting looks so impressive, you can see complexity and depth in there but overall really coherent looks, and wonderful weathering on the armour. That’s a lot of fiddly priming & paint layers etc to get through! Looking forward to seeing how the fabric-manoeuvring works Very Happy

Thank you very much, I appreciate it. The costumes are still in progress (some of them to be modified, others just placeholders), but I will be building on these, getting to something closer to screen accurate, hopefully.

Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it. It is perhaps a little easier to get aliens more or less right than humans. Smile Yeah, priming and layers are key (whether or not I could have done better). I can't believe there was a time I thought I could get away without priming. I've started on some fabric work, but not a whole lot to show just yet.
