I often avoid buying items from China, but for those of us who aren't too skilled at rooting hair ourselves, these seemed like a good alternative: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/4000221673329.html?_randl_currency=USD&_randl_shipto=US&src=google&src=google&albch=shopping&acnt=708-803-3821&slnk=&plac=&mtctp=&albbt=Google_7_shopping&albagn=888888&isSmbAutoCall=false&needSmbHouyi=false&albcp=9765961330&albag=100795971798&trgt=1478144416009&crea=en4000221673329&netw=u&device=m&albpg=1478144416009&albpd=en4000221673329&gclid=CjwKCAiAhreNBhAYEiwAFGGKPA0dPlX4kwU8UzK3r_0g_gTzzQfEDo0dSqNiUPojKU0q4bUeRQYq8RoCSKwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&aff_fcid=c756719729f84d04b2dc41705599b6d2-1638847779303-02613-UneMJZVf&aff_fsk=UneMJZVf&aff_platform=aaf&sk=UneMJZVf&aff_trace_key=c756719729f84d04b2dc41705599b6d2-1638847779303-02613-UneMJZVf&terminal_id=b9f4877645b141eb97ac71afd1bfa65a&UTABTest=aliabtest194170_247435&OLP=10500109_f_group0

So I ordered a couple and they arrived recently, but not the colors I chose - I received jet black and red (ginger) wigs instead of brown and gray. I'm not going to try and return them - I'll find a use for them - but am curious about others' experiences with this site/seller and if shipping errors like this are common? Also, I've thought of coloring the red wig darker but wanted some suggestions for methods before I attempt anything myself and potentially ruin the hair's texture. I'm considering fabric markers, fabric dye (not sure real hair dye would be effective) or watered down paint...

I buy from AE all the time and rarely receive the wrong thing. When I receive the wrong thing, I open a case and get a refund.

I can see how these would come in handy in your and Reverend Spooky's fantasy worlds. But what kind of prep do you have to do to the head? Whittle it down to bald level or below?

I'm not sure about dyeing that kind of 'hair'....it's almost like a faux fur, eh? I know some people are able to paint faux fur, though, using (I presume) airbrush paints or super watered down acrylic.

Well that's certainly useful for dolls that you might wanna change the hairstyle of, since 'rooting' a doll with glue is a bit of a permanent solution. Decent find, though I wonder if it might not be a better idea to just cut and style a woman's wig to the appropriate length? There's certainly a WIDE range of hair colors for women. Plus! People might eventually be able to use the excess to 'root' another doll with less changeable looks.

Is there anywhere that actually sells proper 1/6 scale wigs? I have only seen the 1/6 hairpieces on ebay that have the back of the 'scalp' attached to them.  Otherwise, the only 1/6 wigs I see are on Etsy, but those tend to be for dolls with larger heads. Only a handful of sellers there offer wigs small enough for 1/6 scale heads (somewhere around 3.5"-4").

Basically, unless it's one of those convenient headsculpts with the removable hair, or already bald.

Well I used the black fabric marker trick on the above color and let it dry for a couple of hours, then washed and got the resulting light brown color seen on Cadeus' new hairstyle. So that seems to work well to at least darken, and the water ran clean with no run-off or staining of the headsculpt.

I guess it just depends on the type of material the wig is made from and the style one is going for. I know these can hold virtually any style with ease and no hair product/solution required to maintain, while I think most of the normal synthetic wigs are not as tangible.

It does kind of look like it's the same material as faux fur, which makes me wonder about a DIY version since you could probably make literally dozens of doll wigs out of one yard of fur...

Yeah, I think some faux fur is worth looking into, especially if one wants 'poseable' anime kind of hair.

Melancholia

I buy 90% of my 1/6 clothing and items from Aliexpress.  They have a mind boggling array of products that I can only find for a much higher price on Ebay.   Only had a problem twice when I didn't recieve something and was refunded both times.  But it is a waiting game...And the full boxed figures are usually more pricey than the smaller hobby stores.  Phicen bodies can run as low as $54.00, Jiaou I found for $48.00.  I have seen the scalpless wigs on there also.

Buying action figures from Aliexpress or other stuffs are less costly than those from eBay, that's true. However, the quality is not very much guaranteed unless you do enough research including the reviews, product introduction, product images, etc. before making a purchase. And most importantly, avoid those items with extremely low prices.

You need to do exactly the same thing when buying from Ebay. Why buy from Ebay if Aliexpress is cheaper?

You got a point. I'm not saying that Aliexpress is not a good option, but it just really takes time to identify whether this product is worth it or not. But how can I say, when you finally get what you want at a reasonable price, all the effort worth it.

I’ve used alcohol markers like Copics on faux fur before and it dyes it pretty well! The texture feels ever so slightly tacky afterwards but if you brush out the fibres and blot it with tissue afterwards it’s barely noticeable.
