JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES

Initially I was amused by forum member lawlaw91's "experiments in the wacky world of poses" in his topic:

My Wild Jojoniser Jojoniser Vibe Poses

Then I became intrigued.

Finally, I found myself inspired to attempt to emulate some of lawlaw's impressive action figure posing.

My efforts do not (yet) approach the stylish precision lawlaw91 has achieved, but after a couple of hours of playing around with a basic jointed figure and a TBLeague seamless figure, I learned a lot about how much these figures are capable of and how to get them to do what I want them to do... more or less.

For my first attempt, I started with an old DiD military figure body that I picked  up via eBay a few months ago. Nothing fancy, just a cheap twenty-year-old jointed body.

The first challenge I set for myself was simple: get the figure to stand on its own in a position other than rigidly straight, and without external support.

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo1
Quasimodo Muchly?

'Kay, that's not exactly "Jojo Stylin'," but at least it's... something. I dunno what, but something!

Once I got the fig to stand by itself, I began to scroll through lawlaw91's photos, looking for a relatively simple pose to emulate. I chose Post No. 3, the "cool hair" pose:

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo2
Cool Hair, Don't Care!

It's a mostly standing straight pose, with some bent knee and pointy toe action happening. It might not look like much -- because it's not -- but compared to what I've done with my figures up to this point, this simple "vogue - strike a pose" felt like a significant first step toward upping my game!

Next "step," then, is the Cool Dude Walk, as illustrated in Post No 14:

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo3
Yo!

It's a little stiff, but it's a start. Loosen up, man, loosen up!

'Z'uuuup? Gimme Five, Clive!

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo6
Oooops!

Well... that was bound to happen! Turns out the old DiD body chillaxed a bit too much. The ankle joints, in particular, started to loosen up after just a little bit of play time. I'll maybe try to tighten them up with some teflon tape later.

That was a key discovery, however: "posing" requires a figure that will actually hold a pose! The joints have to be tight, because the slightest slip and down he, or she, or it goes!

By this point I was starting to "get a feel" for the fig, and some things I learned way back when I was nine or ten years old while building model rockets began to come back to me regarding center of balance.

The diagram in the first post of lawlaw91's Phicen/TBLeague Posing Compilation topic...

https://onesixthfigures.forumotion.com/t1411-phicen-tb-league-posing-compilation-messing-with-seamless-family

... proved helpful in this regard, re-activating some long-dormant memories about center of gravity and balance points. While the topic is mostly about realistic posing, the points illustrated pertain to balance as well. People (and animals, and things) stand and sit and move and pose the way they do because those are the positions that allow them to maintain balance and not fall down. It makes sense, then, that a "realistic" pose should, in theory, be a "stable" pose. Post No. 6 in that topic offers three excellent examples of "dynamic standing" poses -- the figure is just standing, but there's a sense of dynamic comic book style energy to the stances that not only serve to make the figure look cool, but to help it stand unaided.

Okay, so... looking cool. Now that we've got a few falls bruising our backside, it's time to take things up a notch, and go for the Cool Guy Leaning Backwards in Style move, as seen in Post No. 17:

Now that we're getting a feel for the basics using a jointed figure, let's bring in somebody from Team TBLeague!

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF PLASTIC POSES - continued....

After beginning my experiments in EXTREME POSING with a jointed figure, since that is what lawlaw91 uses for his male figure posing pictures, and learning quite a bit about balance, center of gravity, and the importance of having stiff joints that will hold a position...

... as an aside, I find it a bit ironic that for action figures, stiffness in the joints offers a significant advantage when it comes to extreme poses; but for myself, that is not the case...

... I elected to carry out further experiments using a TBLeague (Phicen) seamless figure. The TBLeague figures are based on a steel internal jointed frame, or armature, and most TBLeague figures are able to hold poses well.

The first thing I noticed was...

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo13
Easy Peasy! I Can Do This Blindfolded!

... posing and balancing a seamless figure is WAY TONS EASIER!

The seamless figures feel SOLID, Daddy-O, compared to the light and flimsy jointed bodies. They have enough mass to them to pretty much plop down and stay put. And the joints do not shift once they're positioned. Plus, the TBL figs have a lot of joints. I've seen diagrams and photos of dissected specimens, but the diagrams and pics don't convey the difference in how they move nearly as well as just holding one in your hand and sensing the way it poses and flexes.

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo14
The Difference Is Mind-Blowing!

The center of mass -- that is, the heaviest part of the figure -- in a seamless figure tends to be similar to a real human; that is, the weight is in the body core. With jointed figures, the central body core tends to be hollow plastic and of relatively light weight. The arms and legs and head are relatively heavier, which affects weight distribution while posing and balancing. The seamless figures are naturally center weighted, so outstretched arms and legs have less of an effect on the balance. In theory, this should mean more extreme or outlandish balanced poses are possible with a TBLeague figure. My posing experience is not yet to that point, but I can state with confidence, based on my recent experiments, that TBLeague figures are noticeably easier to balance than are plastic jointed figures.

Or maybe that gal has a fat butt. With a lead bottom, an air head, and balloon boobs, that pose would work!

And that wraps up my first foray in to the Wild, Wacky World of EXTREME ACTION FIGURE POSING!

THANKS to lawlaw91 for the inspiration and for providing some helpful hints and tricks!

I hope to follow up with some male TBLeague figures. Their even heavier weight will make them interesting to work with. Perhaps, too, I'll try something with Jaiou bodies, which are quite heavy for their size, but which have slightly different armatures.

And I still need to figure out that C-curve from Post No. 40

Until then...

I second Stryker. Great job with the posing. While the Jojonizing extreme poses are impressive -- and educational -- I think the slightly more pedestrian poses, which one is more likely to need when replicating most real life scenes, are more valuable in practical terms -- like your guy doing the cool walk. Or your gal carrying him over the treshold (or whatever). Smile That you were able to do this with one of the old DID bodies (which, correct me if I'm wrong, are not exactly cutting edge in terms of range, realism, and balance) is even more impressive. With the TBLeague figures, especially, I'd imagine making sure your ankle joint is strong is crucial. Their heftiest bodies sometimes tend to overcome the ankle hold even in their own native feet -- if and when you get to that, try using electrical tape or silicon tubing, or something else that helps the ankle hold. As for the girl, those untied shoelaces are an accident waiting to happen -- attend to them fast! Smile Also, remember, no actual striptease on this forum! Smile

Wow...being mentioned twice of my own posts straight by others is mind-blowing....I m glad my stuff is inspiring but also stress that I can't do shxt-post to avoid poisoning others Laughing Very Happy

Well I also glad that you have fun with those tips and messing around your figures, but just warm remind those poses are just temporary fun, damage will be forever, so be careful the dropping counts and articulation points bending position

with that being said you seem already overcome the problem which you can't make them standing even with straight pose, so, I guess this is your most exciting achievement, and I cannot wait to see them more affraid

Was the balancing act yesterday a fluke?

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo32

These two figures can't do it!

The TBLeague fig in the posing pics I've posted so far is a TBLeague S41. After working with the jointed figure yesterday, I picked up the S41 almost at random and everything just worked! I did a few additional poses earlier today, as seen above.

This afternoon I decided to try with a different TBLeague figure, a S44/45. I thought the smaller figure might work even better for extreme poses, as the limbs are more slim, allowing, in theory, for tighter bends.

The first S44/45 I tried had loose ankles. I could barely get it to stand up straight unaided.

I tried a second one. The ankles are somewhat more snug, but... the balance just isn't there! I can't get it to do the "leaning backwards walk," I can't get it to do the "extreme squat," and I can't get anything close to the "Russian dance" pose. One foot poses are limited to pretty much straight standing poses with one foot slightly elevated, nothing like I managed yesterday.

The "slightly slouched walk" as seen in this pic is the most "extreme" pose I can manage. I can't get anything even close to the "Keep On Truckin'" pose that wrapped up my post yesterday.

Next to the TBL fig is a Jiaou 10E body. And what you see is what you get. It will stand, kinda hunched over, reminiscent of the "Quasimodo" pose I coaxed out of Jointed Guy yesterday. The Jaiou lacks the flexibility to achieve the squatting poses, and the joints do not hold their positions when pushed to their limits. While the ankles are fairly snug, I just can't get the body to balance while leaning backwards. I doubt it would stand in the position seen here if there were a head attached. I can't get anything nearly approaching the "Russian dance" pose.

I guess using the S41 yesterday was a lucky accident. If I had started with either the TBL S44/45 or the Jiaou, I would have been disappointed.

TBLeague attached-foot designs will be completely impractical for free-standing poses. I think I have an "anime body," S36/37 style, that I can try tomorrow. I think I can dig up a "petite" S26, and maybe a S28 as well.

I'm disappointed to discover that the poses were apparently a fluke rather than my actually learning anything or developing a "touch."

Be advised: not every TBleague body will work equally well for extreme posing.

Now I wanna junk 'em all and just keep the S41.

Except... another thing to be aware of... the metal armature comes very close to the surface in some of the poses pictured. I doubt that the figure will withstand frequent heavy-duty play, nor would it be wise to leave a figure posed in an extreme position for any length of time.

I really expected to be able to get the "Russian dance" thing happening with the other figures. It's a major disappointment that I can't seem to get any of those cool break dancing, kicking, backwards leaning, one foot poses to happen.

I have yet to try my one male TBLeague body, a M32 style.

Dunno if I care. At this point my enthusiasm has gone from 10 to zero.

BAMComix

BAMComix
Yeah, different bodies have different weight ratios/balance, but that's not to say you can't still have a ton of fun experimenting to see what they can do Very Happy

I am not at all surprised that the greater weight of the TBLeague bodies puts too much stress on the ankles when pushed to extremes. That's why I advised fortifying them first. I don't know the anime body you used and why exactly it worked out so well, but that may have been exceptional -- to that model or to that particular product.

Zelinda reacts in both amusement and horror when she walks in on Mom and Dad reliving the Break Dancing days of their youth:

Mom is a Jiaou10E figure. Dad is a TBLeague M32 figure.

And yes, Dad's trousers came unbuttoned during his gyrations. He's packed on a few inches around the mid-section over the years. Hey, it happens!

Or maybe he's trying to show that he's still fly!

As for Zelinda (TBLeague S44/45), she says she just "wasn't in the mood" yesterday, but she wants everyone to know that she can bust a move any time she feels like it:

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo35

JoJoNiZeR 2 - ELeCTRiC BOoGALOo; or, My LAWLAWSTYLE EXPERIMENTS in the WACKY WORLD OF POSES Jojo36
Yo!

The learning curve continues to curve on this JojoJourney of Extreme Posing. After utterly failing yesterday with both the smaller TBLeague figure and the Jiaou figure, I tried to analyze the issues. While the body geometry plays a part in how well a particular model of figure will balance, two major factors are the stiffness of the ankle joint and the fit of the foot inside the shoes if the figure is wearing shoes.

The ankle joint must be stiff enough to hold a position with the mass of the figure pressing on it, but it must have a sufficient range of motion to allow for some severe angles.

There can be no "slip" of the foot inside a shoe or boot, and the shoe must be rigid enough to not flex out of shape under the weight of the figure.

Additionally, the joints of the figure must be able to hold a pose. The Jiaou body is more prone to slipping out of position than are the TBLeague bodies. The TBLeague figures generally hold poses longer than the Jiaou without falling over.

The petite S44/45 figure does not balance quite as well as the slightly heftier S41 I initially worked with. The S41 combines the agility of the petite "anime style" body with a slightly higher mass, more in line with a full-size TBLeague body.

As near as I can determine, my frustration with the S44/45 figure yesterday was a result of loose ankle joints in one of the figures, and loose fit of the shoes on the second figure.
