These photos were specifically shot at a time of day where the sun is striking background object with such intensity that achieving an workable lighting ratio between the background and the subject in the foreground would be difficult without the NIKON Auto FP sync mode which syncs the camera flash to very high shutter speed (1/320), which combined with a high f.stop greatly reduces the intensity of hot areas in the background, allowing while using micro bursts of flash energy to ensure the foreground figure(s) is / are properly lit.
