This set is based on the 1966 French War Comedy movie "La Grande Vadrouille"
The Plot is as follows: A RAF Bomber is shot down over Paris by the Germans. Its crew land there by parachute. With the help of some French civilians they try to escape over the demarcation line into the southern part of France, still not occupied by the Germans.

The figures are based on French comedians Louis de Funès and Bourvil, in their Wehrmacht disguise

To an American like me, this seems like an obscure film on which to base a highly detailed action figure set. Is the film and are these actors still well-known or well-regarded in France, or in the rest of Europe?

It was the biggest seen French comedy movies, with 17 Million French people watching it. Only Titanic had more watchers, and that 42 years after. No idea if it was a big hit in the US, but it was in Europe. If you can get your hands on it, I recommend it, its a hilarious movie.

I really like these sets and especially the casual extra accessories and the sculpts. Louis de Funés was instantly recognisable. I don't know the other actor though. ^^

DID did a bourvil set a few years ago of the painter, and also used the bozz eyed geezer for a sculpt for a cook[maybe?]. Terry Thomas is in it too, which to my knowledge no one has ever done a decent job of a Thomas sculpt? which is a shame, ide love a cheeky Terry sculpt
I have a head for funes that i think head play did 10+ years ago? that i think looks quite a lot better that this sculpt. Nice set over all though, but seems to look like a bunch of dragon left overs a bit.

I join the others in thanking you for the identification, ZD. I think I recognized Louis, in part because of the painter outfit, which was already rendered as a collectible. I saw quite a few of his films, but it was when I was a child, and am not sure I really remember much.
