lets be a bit philosophical, shall we? - Sun Sep 15, 2019 10:20 pm

Now you see why he was selected to play Bond. He was only a passable actor and he could barely speak English. He was chosen purely for his looks.

And yet Ian Fleming was so impressed with Connery in the role of Bond that he re-wrote the character in his later novels to make him half Scottish, half Swiss.

Only after Connery received intensive lessons in elocution, deportment, and acting. Fleming initially thought he was an uncouth brute entirely unsuited for the role.

Interesting.  I did not know that. Still, whoever taught him must have done a good job as Connery as Bond is #3 on the American Film Institute list of movie heroes, behind Harrison Ford / Indiana Jones (#2) and Gregory Peck / Atticus Finch (#1)

For all the effort I'd put into the Kamiko figure I'd created to as closely as possible match my DAZ 3D creation, I just wasn't satisfied with either the hair or the bow.  In a previous post, I explained how I'd given her long bangs by pulling a lock of hair from back to front and fixing it in place using a small paintbrush and dilute simple syrup. (boiled water and sugar) and how I'd attached to bow to a bent piece of steel wire, painted red.

This however left the rest of Kamiko's hair way too fluffy and prone to going out of place. The bow, was was often moving about and getting flattened out as well. To boot, flecks of red paint kept coming off the hair band.  See below.

Dissatisfied, I decided to try the simple syrup technique on all her hair and find a better solution for the bow.  First, I wet all of the head sculpt's hair with tap water and dried off most of the excess. Then I carefully styled it all in place using a modellers paint brush...a #1, I think and the syrup.  This took longer than you might think, because of the bangs.  Next, while still wet but partially dry, I used a cocktail pick to puff up the hair where I want it it puffed up a bit, and finally let it dry over night.

After

The next morning I made a new bow and after trying to fix it using thinner wire than before, basically decided to try something novel; sew it directly to her hair.  Since her locks were now fixed as if they'd been hair sprayed, this turned out to be a practical solution and I simply ran a red thread three o four times over the center of the bow and beneath a lock of hair that ran parallel to the long axis of the bow, and tying it off.  I used a bit more simple syrup to fix the hair around the bow, and this had an unintended by beneficial effect on the bow in that it was puffed up at the time and served to soak up the syrup to the point of saturation.  I only noticed this later when I noticed that the bow had dried as nice and stiffly puffed up as though someone had starched it into shape.

For those who are wondering, you cannot of course use actual hair spray on wig hair and almost certainly not doll or action figure hair, which like most wig hair, is synthetic.  It might be possible to use wig spray, but I'd be afraid of what it might do to the head sculpt.  To boot, it probably would not have left me sufficient time to shape the hair like I wanted to and would be a bigger pain to clean up.  The dilute syrup works well, I think.  But judge for yourselves.

As a final part of the makeover, I decided to switch out Kamiko's sports bra for the high-collared T-shirt and immediately loved the effect  It's almost a turtleneck and to boot, it helps to camouflage what I find are this figures worst feature, the bony shoulders.  The bra does look wonderful on my new S28A figure with it's meatier and more rounded shoulders and since I'm keeping that one on, I figured that Kamiko could try wearing a T-shirt for now.  Personally, I really like the whole makeover, but as always, your comments and or critiques are welcome.

I'm seriously surprised this has been put up for PO (not on Sideshow yet, though); the movie is bombing at the box office, and it's getting horrible reviews by most people. I've read a few, and one of the biggest complaints is that it is horrendously violent and gory (not surprising with Neill Marshall at the helm -- that guy doesn't know how to tell a story without gratuitous amounts of blood-letting and entrails), but that it's also poorly written and acted. I'll probably see it at some point (cough -- Netflix -- cough), but I still can't believe this is going ahead. They produced two really good prototypes of the Valerian cast, but when the movie bombed, they never put them up for PO. They showed a tease for Shazam!, but he still hasn't gone up for PO, and the movie is making money at #1 -- this hasn't even reached the number two spot, and somehow it gets put up.

I wonder if Howard has a soft spot for HB, OR he unwisely paid through the nose for the license, and feels compelled to go through with this in the hopes the HB fans will buy this anyway. I think he'd be better off revisiting the Pearlman HB figure instead of a guy no one cares about, but that's just me.

TRICITY™️: Goddess of Lightning.

(Adrianne Curry: America’s Next Top Model winner, Host of Stan Lee’s Super Fans, VH1) appears as Tricity in the comic book: Gekido #1)

“They” took her. Tortured her. Forced her to do unconscionable things. Using bio-tech elements, they turned her into a human weapon to carry out their twisted missions... She wakes to find scars all over her body. Someone had taken her. She starts to remember... Her name was Genie. She taught special needs children, was an aspiring writer trying to move on with her life after the breakup from her fiancé, until… they took control of her mind, turned her into a living high voltage capacitor, a weaponized slave. In battle, her neural link broke, allowing her to break free & escape.  Now she is the one in control!  Her existence threatens their whole operation, & they won't stop until they destroy her. Before they strike again, Tricity plans to use her electrically-infused cybernetic implants to exact revenge on her captors. They thought they made her into a weapon, but instead gave birth to their executioner. Now they will be the ones to suffer.

Tricity will embark on a journey to uncover the secrets that haunt her. She’ll stumble upon a web of espionage lead by an evil dictator & the doctor that created her. Kill-Strike Muay Thai fighting with Mixed Martial Arts was downloaded into Tricity’s brain. Able to slice through anything, her Tri-onic™️ arm implants are powered by the arteries of her circulatory system & glands acting as a generator. Her exposed skin is deadly to the touch causing electrocution upon contact. Her mask harnesses the electromagnetic discharge from her eyes… if unleashed, she can ignite like an atomic bomb!

“They” are known as G.A.H. (Genetically Altered Humans) led by their dictator, SUNDER™️, bent on world domination. They created Tricity & used her to lure the man she once loved, PHARRELL™️, to them. He found an ancient alien artifact of immense power that holds the secrets of existence. Tricity was forced into a cataclysmic battle with him. It triggered the artifact to solidify, consuming Pharrell. It transforms him into an unstoppable weapon named RAVEDACTYL™️, in a war of epic proportions!

Tricity will also encounter new threats; CLEO™️ (Coco Austin: Ice Loves Coco with Ice-T) along with the assassin; GEKIDO®️on the hunt for the evil mystical LORD SHINRYU™️ (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa: Shang Tsung of Mortal Kombat & The Man In The High Castle) while someone in the shadows watches on, the vigilante; CODE NAME: JUSTICE®️ who fights to discover the truth behind the conspiracies, corruption & Tricity’s connection to it all.  Now Tricity must confront them to piece together the puzzle & extract the elements they each possess before it’s too late. She will risk sacrificing herself to try & stop Sunder’s G.A.H. before time runs out. If they bleed, they can be killed… blood runs through their veins… electricity runs through hers.

Genie is a victim no more, for she has become something new. Something dangerous. Something deadly.

She vows to empower the powerless. She is retribution. She is power incarnate. Once the hunted, now she is the hunter. Never cross her, or face death by electrocution from the shock of the one they call, TRICITY™️.

See the comic book Gekido featuring a cameo of Tricity’s 1st appearance at: www.BeyondComics.TV

Tricity is in the upcoming comic book Ravedactyl & made her cameo debut at Comic-Con in BeyondComics.TV ’s comic: GEKIDO #1, featured on multiple TV shows (E! News, Ice Loves Coco, AMC’s Comic Book Men, The Howard Stern 100 News, 20/20 ABC News, The Huffington Post, Fox, Stan Lee’s Super Fans, CNBC & VH1). Tricity is created by artist/writer/CEO Graig Weich (poster artist for Spawn #30 - Image Comics & HBO sponsored UAS award winner).

BeyondComics.TV with TBLeague is proud to bring you the very first-ever licensed Tricity 1/6th scale (12”) action figure doll, utilizing cutting-edge, seamless synthetic-skin technology with a steel skeletal inner-frame allowing for 28 points of posable articulation!

First look at the box. Not big, so didn't expect any base.

Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 06

First look at the main contents. The body was standard wrapped in plastic.
The Second layer contains a stand. The metal holder was fitted at the upper deck, though.

First look at the main body. Pretty much everything already dressed up. I wouldn't recommend taking off the attire, as you can see, it will give you a headache trying to wear it back. Quite tailored to the body, except when you try to bend the body, the rubber suit will come loose. Yes, it is not glued to the body.

However, certain designs are glued to the body! As you can see, 2 each on the right and left side of the waist, one on the lower leg on each leg, and it is attached to the feet! If i try to take off the suit, i will have to tear the skin!

High heels are worn with this figure, and with so much rubber and tubes dangling, I find the figure hard to stand, unless you try your best to balance it. Hence come the stand. The stand can't lit up, like in the promo pictures. It was not great, but it will help with some pose.

Although there are tubes attached to the body, i didn't find it obstructing any postures. The rubber suit is not exactly stretchable, but do not obstruct any moves.

I tried checking for stains, and would like to point out, that there was a very very faint shades of blue on the body, under strong light. It is not severe, however, i think, to affect the display. The body used, I think, is something like S19B, but with bigger bust, and lighter skin tone (not white). There is no nipples, as you can see. I couldn't see any muscle tone too.

Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 18

And...the rest of it. Really nothing much to do. Very unique hand sculpts. And of course, the lightning rod. Nothing luminous though.

Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 19
Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 20

The first picture would be a more accurate capture of it's skin tone. As you can see, the HS will only look straight into your camera, if you point it at the top of the head. The eyes are kinda looking up.

The hair is tied on the top with a metal-looking plastic hair band. The hair at the forehead is tightly sewn, as putting on the mask did not mess up the hair.

Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 25

The mask, unlike the recent releases, is pretty hard. It cannot be bent. This is good, as i do not have to worry about the mask falling off. However, i must mention, during handling of the figure, the mask do snap off a couple of times. At first, i was worried that the hard mask might scratch the face. Luckily, it did not.

Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 28

Well, the other accessories i can put on, will be the lightning bolt. Very easy to put on, with tab A to slot B. I do need to readjust the feet, in order to make the figure stand.

Topics tagged under 1 on OneSixthFigures 31

The stand. It does not lit, but will hold the figure. I wish Phicen includes stand with future figures.

Building an RC sixth scale Jeep - Tue Dec 18, 2018 12:45 pm

Thanks again, GF. I reckon I wandered off in the weeds a little with the comment about my boys. Suffice it to say that they've turned out OK, thus far and I'm proud of them.

The color on this body turned out very well and the paint has held up except for the obvious spots where paint is going to get rubbed despite being careful when running. I've never been one to beat hell out of one of my builds. I'll leave that for someone who enjoys redoing their work over and over. I don't.

Stryker2011 wrote:Looking awesome. Lot of fine work, and funny story.

I really appreciate, Stryker. Oddly enough, looking back on it, I put damn near as much work into the photos and story as I did in the build.

Before moving on...I figured I'd make this installment a "two-fer." Both are short, so what the hell? Besides, I wanted to get the animation of the driver in this posting. Hope to get it wrapped here up by Christmas.

Installments XI and XII

Try though I did, I couldn't get that sorry bunch to help me with the following, so I had to go it alone.

The steering wheel was pretty "plain" looking. I contemplated making a new one, but scrapped that idea when I tried the following and really liked the way it looked.

I took some OD colored heavy nylon twine and simply wrapped it around the "business" part of the wheel. It was finished off with a light coat of superglue.

Here's the result:

And, of course, we can't have a restoration of an old rig like this without some leather (very thin, from an old purse my bride donated to the cause) on the seats, right? So, here we go, leather seats:

Despite our boy's protests, I removed his head (not a simple "pop-off-and-on" type. I cut a plate from his back using my trusty Dremel.

From there, I could access the slotted tabs that held the head on. With his head off, I ground out the tabs, thereby making space for a microservo. In the above photo, you can see how I altered his neck post to fit a circular servo horn.

Below, you can see how the servo fits in the chest cavity. It's not pretty, but I used hot-melt glue because of it's quick drying properties and the fact that I had to get the servo in the correct place in one shot. The glue gave me a little wiggle room, but didn't take two hours to set up.

The hole in the middle of the horn is what attaches it to the servo and it's splined to mate with the splines on the servo shaft. I was hoping for a friction fit and it worked. Still, his head comes off pretty easily, so I might be forced to make further alterations (i.e. put a screw in to hold the horn to the shaft. Very easy operation).

My apologies for the sloppy looking work, but it's going to be covered up by clothing anyway, so what the hell...

And, then he found the servo cord... It wasn't pretty.

Our boy was raising so much hell, I just put him in a drawer for a while to cool down some. When I went back to get him, he'd calmed a bit and was far more rational.

Installment IX

As earlier alluded to, this is a rebuild on an old thread. The sons referred to below have grown up nicely in the ensuing years ... for which I'm truly thankful.

The part about going to an official school visit was true, however, and it did make a nice segue into the question, "why do all the photos look like they were shot in hotel room?" They were. Had many hours to kill on those visits.

Good afternoon, all.

Been rather busy with son #2's baseball season (part of it...), but I made time for an update. Sorry it's been so long coming.

Recently I had occasion to take son #1 to an official college visit. He's a swimmer and the coaches will bring prospective students in for a weekend here and there. On this occasion, we went to East Carolina University in North Carolina. Since I knew I'd be stuck in a hotel room for a couple of days with very little to do (the coaches don't really want the parents around after about the first two hours), I took the project with me to work on. Of course, I had to deal with stowaways...

It took them a while to acclimate (an acceptable amount of bitching and moaning), but we soon got to work.

I had an el cheapo radio system sitting on the work bench, so I took it along. Instead of sitting still the whole time, I found occasion to search out a hobby shop for a few things and a Radio Shack for a battery.

On the platform there, the motor and transmission are already screwed into place. The main shaft going to the transfer case is also visable. All that will be under the hood once the body is mounted.

And, test it I did. Truthfully, it was geared really slowly...too slowly in fact. That was about the time I decided to upgrade to LiPo batties so I could run one with 11.0V and conserve space. Still, the tests went well. There was torque to all be damned. The bare chassis would crawl up a curb with no trouble at all. I did considerable driving through the hotel flower garden as that was the most challenging terrain available.

I was actually beginning to have a pretty good time until the powered chassis went dead. The motor would still spin, but there was no movement.

So, I picked up the chassis and went back to the room. I got there just in time to witness this:

I'd needed an extra long section of drive shaft to bridge the distance between the transmission and transfer case. So, I put two Axial axles together with some brass tubing inside the plastic shaft and epoxied it all together. I reckon I discounted the amount of torque being sent to the transfer case. That was a mistake. It spun in two within 10 minutes with far less weight than the finished vehicle should have.

I've since replaced that shaft with a custom-made one in steel. It won't break again.

Stay tuned.

Moonbase Alpha Male wrote:Yeah, sorry. Yes it is. Because Reverend Spooky is totally The Man on 1/6 music subjects, and the Radio Kings rock, I wanted to give him a complete answer with a better pic of the Running Press compared side by side to a couple of other 1/6 turntables I have, that I'm trying to find in my stuff. Reverend, if that delay made it seem I was ignoring your straight-forward question, I apologize.

Turn, Turn, Turn… (A Tale of 3 Turntables + 1)

#1 Reverend Spooky was inquiring about the Running Press Table, though he may have already got one by now. Anyway for general interest here’s a better pic. $12.95 US. It comes with 3 LPs and each one plays a different 30 seconds of music, which doesn’t mean much to me for picture-taking purposes. I erroneously assumed they would actually spin (which would show as a nice blur in a pic) but they don’t. I think the turntable itself works in scale but the actual records look too big in the figure’s hand.

#2 From the World’s Smallest” Series, @$8 US. Unquestionably it is too small. Otherwise it would be just perfect. Nicely detailed. The record spins, a “strobelight” lights up. I am trying to remember if anybody ever made a record player, for kids maybe, that was smaller and played 45 rpms only. If so this could be a 1/6 version of that. It spins fast enough for 45 rpm.

#3 Rolling Stones Portable Record Player ornament. I have this but I can’t find it. Fun! It spins, plays Gimme Shelter. I was torn about converting it from a Rolling Stones promo item to a more generic portable record player. SO I made a plain cardboard insert for the lid, and put white tape on the front. Now I can have it both ways – or I could, if I could just find it. I believe they made similar ornaments for Elvis Presley, maybe others.

#4 This is one that I don’t have, I wish I did. It was a Hallmark Christmas Ornament in 2016 but it was sold out everywhere before Christmas, so I couldn’t find one when I got my general run of Ornaments for 1/6 on Boxing Day that year. Like the Running Press it detects different “records,” these being Christmas-sy. Scale seems good but I haven't had one in hand.

ReverendSpooky wrote:Damn MBAM, thanks for posting these! I did order the running press one, and it came in yesterday. And I completely agree with your assessment, that it's perfect looking in scale, even if the records look oversized. I tried it with one of my records, and it looks so good. I'm definitely going to do a dark brown wash on the base to get the wood grain to pop. The center spindle is a little big to fit my records, so I may either drill my records out a touch, or replace it with a thinner metal rod. The platter is bigger than the record, but that's not really uncommon. I may replace it with something smaller, but I really could leave as is. Over all, it's EXACTLY what I wanted when I made my own, and I'm so happy with it. Really appreciate the heads up on it.

The world's smallest really does look great, and I do remember there being those kids players for 45s back in the day. That Rolling Stones one is super cool too! Give Me Shelter may be my favorite Stones song , so bonus! I know you can't find it now, but do you remember, size wise, how it scaled against the rest? It is quite cool.

The Christmas one is delightfully retro, although the reindeer on the front does kinda detract from it's uses. I remember someone on OSW mentioning a few years ago Hallmark doing an ornament (I think for Downtown Abbey) of a phonograph, but I never found in store. If it's the one I found googling just now, it might not have been to scale anyway.

Oh man, don't get me started on phonographs now. The Downton Abbey ornament one works well. It may be very marginally underscale but phonographs weren't all a standard size, and it probably helps that phonographs are more remote to us than record players, historical, never a part of our day to day experience. Oh gosh, depressing thought, that's probably how "kids nowadays" relate to the record players. The most common phonograph for 1/6 would be from the "brass pencil sharpeners" series, and isn't bad. The horn looks credible so that phonograph only looks small if you look closely at the record area. There is also a phonograph made by ReMent or one of those "gashapon foods" companies, but that one is definitely too small.

I remember the Stones portable record player being perfect -- slightly less wide than the Running Press but a bit taller, and of course the lid is permanently up. I always take a "scale demo pic" of incoming items so I don't know why I didn't. It will turn up for sure -- one of these days I'll be in my basement and move Jimmy Hoffa's body and there it will be.

While we're on the subject, you'll probably appreciate this ornament. I also have a whole series of mini juke boxes, but they're too small to use (I have a couple of full size 1/6 ones too). This Hallmark ornament works perfectly because it's just the right size to be on a Diner tabletop.

Sorry, you're right of course. Should I delete anything? Technically some of the instruments, mike stands etc shown in the last pic are Barbie items. The pianos were made for doll use, and part of the drums was (ugh) from a Justin Bieber doll set.

ReverendSpooky wrote:Both of those phonographs are a lot of fun. But that tabletop Jukebox!!!! Holy crap, I need to start hunting for one immediately. Those have always had a big place in my heart. I'm from New Jersey, pretty much the mecca of 24 hour diners, and spent a lot of late nights flipping through these little table top jukeboxes. And the scale looks spot on. Damn, so excited just seeing that's out there!

No, no, it's fine. I would never ask anyone to delete something (or delete it myself) unless it is truly inappropriate -- I do make suggestions sometimes but even that seems to hurt people's feelings (different instance, not this). It's just we have to be fair overall. But also in fairness, you were following up on ReverendSpooky's question. Besides, this includes Barbie items as you pointed out (I thought I recognized one or two). If it wasn't for the context, this could have been moved into the appropriate thread, but it's fine as it is.

The figures are all versions of Captain Action, Doctor Evil. One is my actual childhood one from 1967. A couple of the others are from the 1998 Playing Mantis version and the rest are from the 2011 version. Obviously it's a Collage so I don't have that crazy many.

Call this a Teaser from my eventual music-themed Post. I've actually done a little booklet about the 50 year career that these guys have had in the music industry, as the Evil Band. They're a little like KISS, a little like the Dead, and little bit like Forrest Gump because they've been everywhere and met everybody.

Moonbase Alpha Male wrote:OK, here's a full on Teaser for this project -- Front Cover, Back Cover and some concert photos. Fully belonging in this thread because the set up is the Hannah Montana doll's Concert Stage (actually two of them combined). There's quite a lot of Barbie stuff in the overall project.

ReverendSpooky wrote:What an awesome project!!! That band just kills me, and of course, I love the nod to The Clash cover.

Also, just ordered that Hallmark tabletop Jukebox on EBay. 100% needed one for St Crow's Loft, although the prospect of doing a Fallout style 50's diner is quite appealing...

You will love it. It lights up, it plays music (which doesn't matter for photo purposes I guess) and it has movement in that the "pages" actually flip. In fact you can actually select different music by pressing the letter codes at the front. Awesomeness squared. I hope I didn't lead you to spend too much but I think you will find it worthwhile. Look forward to seeing it turn up in something.

Thanks for the comments on the Teaser for the Dr Evil Band. I'm most grateful you mentioned the Clash reference because the project contains dozens of music and pop culture references, some obvious and some very well hidden, so I hope people will find that amusing. There's a lot of narrative hidden or implied in the pics. You may tell from the back cover that I started this concept back in 2014 (at Christmas) so it's been a long time coming. The problem for me is that I still haven't done a couple of fairly complex photoshoots for it (like "the Evil play the Egyptian Pyramids '78" and "the Evil go to Sturgis") and unfortunately because the whole thing is laid out like a booklet, the incomplete gaps will be obvious. I have decided now however to just put it out there even with a few gaps -- partly because I figure here in OSF, "we're among friends," and people should be ok with that as a work in progress. May I say, I am nowhere comparing myself to your excellence but it was your Radio Kings repost that made me want to get this out there (along with the fact I showed off my pic with all the instruments, and the ball rolled from there).

$17 with shipping, which is a straight up steal. It was a drop everything and go buy it now kinda purchase when you showed it. Man, your collection of 1/6 pieces that weren't intended for 1/6 is awe inspiring. Be careful, I may start asking you weird "was something like this ever made in 1/6" kinda questions.

I'm so glad you did end up posting the work in progress shots! The whole project is so fun. The alien looking band is such a trip, and the fact that they have this really retro look already lends itself so well to the classic rock feel. And I'm not sure if the white flowing shirt was from the original Doctor Evil, but its somehow a perfect fit for both 60's rock guitarist or 60's super villian, which kinda cracks me up for a lot of reasons. I'm really looking forward to seeing it as a whole, when it is finished, because it's a really cool project.

What is the 1st photo in reference to (I bet Dadrab would have seen it immediately)? I feel like with the pose, and that specific photo effect, it's on the tip of my tongue.

Chapter One is up now, I'm dying for your comments. You are never going to believe what that white flowing shirt is. That's an actual Seinfeld "Puffy Shirt"! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qWFSBqAxR4 It originally came with the DVD set of that particular season of Seinfeld. It fits 1/6 OK, though it doesn't close at the back. Pic #1 isn't specifically anyone (unless unconsciously) but it's meant to be in the spirit of "Crawdaddy" magazine, which was Rolling Stone's poorer freakier cousin in the day.

Any questions you may have about out-of-left-field potential 1/6 items, I'll be glad to answer if I know. In case it should be something you don't want to reveal in advance to readers of Radio Kings or whatever, feel free to PM me, or I can give you my real world email.
