HelloBirdie
Hey everyone,

Has anyone rerooted a Zoy Toys 1/6 scale figure?

I've pre-ordered the Zot Toys Mulan, and intend to reroot her when she arrives. Can anyone give me any tips on how difficult it is, or point me to a tutorial please?

If the head is anything like the Kumik ones then she’ll have a resin face and separate silicone scalp. If you scroll down a bit you can see how I rerooted a Kumik sculpt a few years back.

Thanks very much. The tutorial is great, and I love your custom figure! She's so well done, and I really like her intense gaze. Very Happy

Amazing job Christine! Recapitated had me laughing. But what a difference that new head (and your improvements to it) made!

HelloBirdie,

Instead of rooting the hair you could also glue it. It is a messy process, but pays off. Here is one of several threads illustrating this:

Actually this one might be easier to follow, maybe:

Not all of the 1/6 scale heads have silicone scalp pieces... some of the scalp pieces are plastic. Usually they are still made of a softer plastic than the face piece, but not necessarily soft enough to make rooting viable.

I personally find actual re-rooting to be too daunting on 1/6 scale heads, so like GubernatorFan's suggestion, I prefer to glue the hair onto the scalp piece. But first, I prepare the scalp by removing all the existing hair (either by shaving it, or pulling all the hair out), then sanding it and cleaning it with acetone to make sure all the shininess of the plastic is gone, then I either paint the scalp and/or draw the hair lines, and then I start gluing the hair. For this type of process, I use tibetan lamb hair.

Some people go all out and use some kind of sculpting material on the back of the head to make gluing easier -- if one has trouble gluing the hair to the original plastic scalp, this helps solve that issue. I've never had a problem gluing the hair onto the plastic as long as I prepare it properly, but just mentioning this in case.

Alternatively, one can make a tiny wig. I haven't tried that method though, but hope to eventually (also using tibetan lamb hair).

Wow, Christine. That custom figure is awesome. I’d love to see a storyline with her in it. That second head is perfect for that character based on the screen caps, and all the work you put into her is amazing.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll see once she get's here which would work best. Thankfully I've made doll wigs before so I feel comfortable going that route. I really appreciate the advice.

Thanks! I was so sure I’d posted her here but perhaps not! I really need to take her out again at some point along with my other fantasy figs. I spend most of my time on Max and Juno but the others do get photoshoots from time to time. (Her hair definitely has a mind of its own though, lol)

Your work is absolutely fascinating... from the hair rooting to the armor crafting, your skills are stunning, and the result is just amazing... Thanks for sharing again!
