Nein, danke. At first I thought they had created a fantasy Richard the Lionheart (r. 1189-1199) instead of a fantasy Friedrich Barbarossa (r. 1152-1190). Then I saw what they were doing. It is a fine fantasy medieval-ish king, but a very poor historical representation. Even partial plate armor belongs later (something they love to forget), and that baroque fiction armor could only have existed (if ever), after the Renaissance. The helmet seems nice for adding a crown, but it is of a later type too. The hideous bat-winged fish-headed helmet seems more at home on the Flash Gordon movie set. The throne is beautiful but would be more at home among the elves in Middle Earth. The heraldic imagery is off. The earliest heraldic crest preserved for Friedrich's family, the Hohenstaufen, from slightly after Friedrich's death, was a single lion ("leopard" in heraldic terminology), not three (they do appear later, but are far more familiar as the crest of England). Moreover, Friedrich would have displayed the imperial emblem he popularized, a heraldic eagle (at this point still single-headed, the double-headed one apparently appeared under his grandson Friedrich II). Maybe the tunic is ok? I like the head sculpt. Long story short, if you get it, get it as a random fantasy king, not what it purports to be.

Yeahhh. An odd figure, for sure. I didn't comment on it straight away because I had no idea if it was supposed to be based on some weird movie I might have missed, or if it was supposed to be the actual historical figure. Seeing as it's supposed to be the latter, then....eep.

I guess the headsculpt is kinda neat. Though certainly not worth getting the whole set for....

I kinda like this. Not as a historical figure but as something I can use for bashing. I like the gauntlets the most but the headsculpt is pretty sweet.

If their "perchero" is based on a percheron horse then it is a draft horse, not a warhorse. They never existed until the roads started to improve in the 18th century when they needed larger breeds to pull carriages.

I’m getting Anson Mount vibes from the head sculpt.

Thanks GF for the much needed info! Surely Barbarossa should have a red beard? Having said that I rather like this figure for - as you say - a purely fantasy knight. The headsculpt looks great for another project I have in mind.

I love your Flash Gordon jibe! I laughed when I read that. So true!

Welcome. Smile And thank you. Yes, Barbarossa should be red-bearded; this looks brownish to me, but maybe it is their idea of reddish.

Speaking of Flash Gordon, weren't they supposed to make the guy?

Go Hero released a 1/6 scale Buster Crabbe 1930s movie serial version Flash Gordon figure circa 2010.

I agree, that helmet is strongly reminiscent of King Voltan's helmet in both the Flash Gordon serials and the 1980 movie.
