Ok, you want my honest answer? This one looks even less realistic than the other one somehow. Maybe it's just the paintjob, but I'm not that into it.

There is no point asking for a dishonest answer, so I appreciate it. Is it too pristine/idealized? It certainly reminds me of epic horse statues.

I think it requires the ability to sculpt (either in-hand or 3D) and *also* an actual motivation to care about real horses' anatomy, structure, movement, coat colours, etc. You see fantastic sculpting, painting, and hairing from the model horse community, both professional and amateur, for this reason. Because they love horses and are passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter.

Whereas these 1/6 action figure companies seem to care enough to put out moderately decent horses now and then (Mr. Z being one of the better ones and still being hit or miss at best), but not enough to actually bother with getting the finer details that elevate the model to a level of believeable realism when someone who knows horses looks at it.

So, yes, it's perfectly possible to make a convincingly realistic 1/6 scale horse. The person (and/or company) making it just has to care enough to do so.

I guess it is similar to InArt and Customs versus "normal" products...

But on the other hand, if I'm creating a horse figure, there aren't many knobs to turn - I still wonder why you don't look for a certain race, take some pics like a painter would do and make the horse 1:1 from the "template" pic.
I mean these companies probably never heared of Hanoverian or Duweime before doing their research of them and then you already have real life pictures to make your molds for.

Valiarde - yes Luis Aguilar is one of the best doing custom 1/6 resin horse models. He is also a horse person in RL so knows his stuff.

I suspect the Chinese companies end up with unrealistic figures because a lot of them just use crappy, pre-existing horse models or toys as their references, rather than real horses. I've seen 1/6 horses from third party companies that look like larger versions of smaller, cartoonish toy-quality models. It would be like if Hot Toys was blowing up old Hasbro 3.75" figures to 1/6 scale, slapping a different paintjob on them, and then trying to pass them off as 'realistic'.

These figures are beautiful! I like both of them. I liked the horse at first sight, too, but then I started worrying that it would break its back. Still, my eyes isn't schooled enough to mind too much.
