Staining fabric -- I just tested again with a pristine white paper towel and plenty of pressing and rubbing on two bodies that got their nipples painted recently. The real touch marker did not stain at all. The oil pastel did not either. But you have to make sure you have followed the proper procedures -- help the marker ink dry by soaking up the (wet) excess, and then give it some more time for good measure. With the oil pastel, make sure you have rubbed it in very well, and then gently wash it with some warm water -- this should help get rid of any remaining loose particles and should also indicate if the color is not fully ensconced (you would see it run or stain the paper towel with which you dry it -- if you see that, you need to do some more rubbing in). This last issue is more common when you have colored an entire body, not just the nipples. When I put one of my first "black" bodies into some light-colored sport shorts for the photos, I saw a little bit of color transfer, not enough to notice from the outside, but it was there on the inside. And this indicated I hadn't done a thorough enough job. And, of course, remember to re-apply the protective powder, which should also help decrease the likelihood of staining a little.

Thank you for the suggestion regarding cleaning pencil marks. Incidentally, soft pencil can be applied to the seamless body surface, and then it can be transferred easily to other surfaces that come into contact with it. This would make it a prime culprit when it comes to staining.

My brain works funny, so I come up with some strange stuff. Hopefully, when the idea comes to me, I also come up with a way to shoot it.
Used a GoPro Hero for the zip line and edited the whole schmear with Wondershare Filmora. It's a pretty nice, capable suite of tools.

I thank you, too, for the comment on the yard. I've worked really steadily on it the last couple of years. When our kids were younger, we spent waaaaaaay too many weekends sitting around a pool (son #1 was a swimmer) or a baseball diamond (son #2). Years of neglect meant I had a ton of work to do just to get back to "even," so to speak. It's getting there.

I had the opportunity today to go to Marcel Laurin Park and it's big pile of rocks and waterfall and shoot some photos>  I brought along more figures than I have in the past; five in total though I only used four. The objective was simple:  just shoot a few photos of the figures with the latest additions their gear which is slowly trickling in, on average two months after I order it. So let's get started.

The Sola Topi or India Pattern Sun Helmet

The India pattern helmets were worn by British troops in the far east from the early 20th C into the 1950's when they were declared obsolete.  The name Sola Topi comes in part from the material from which they were made, the pith of the roots of the sola or shola plant, whist "topi" is derivative of the Hindu word "Tope," which means hat.  Because of the material with which they were made, they were very light, and very comfortable. The India pattern is easily distinguished from the other major type in use by the British in this era, the "Wolsely pattern" by the flattened top of the crown and the distinctive shape of the brim. Generally, the top part British sun helmets were covered in khaki cloth, while the undersides were covered by green cloth, and I've never seen either a Wolsely or Sola Topi that didn't have a puggaree (pagri) wrapped around the base of the crown.

As one can see from the photos, Captain (retired) Glynnis Penny-Farthing has also acquired herself a Thompson submachinegun someplace to replace that old, very un-British German Mauser rifle.  She will also acquire more weapons as time goes by and retain her bush has shown in a previous post on DIY hats and alternate between the bush hat and topi.

Next are a series of Kamiko wearing a kimono over Kamiko body #2.  This is my second Kamiko body #2; the first having been eventually used to create Erika von Stroheim.  I keep two bodies because it's a giant pain to undress Kamiko body #1 with it's tall boots and tight pants every time I want her in a different outfit.

What's really new here however is that Kamiko has acquired a sword, technically a WWII era Type 94 Shin Gunto, or new military sword, but since many of these were in fact katana's made in the traditional manner and equipped with a metal scabbard, I've decided that Kamiko's gunto is exactly that; a 17th century blade with a 1930's scabbard

The model sword itself is a DiD Shin Gunto parted out from the Captain Sam, 77th ID set and purchased from Monkey Depot. It's all metal and has two metal scabbard rings as Shin Gunto's were required to have, though the lower one was only used for ceremonial purposes and the sword was normally hooked to the belt using only the top ring. Since this represents a captured sword, it didn't come with belt or hangers and I fashioned a hanger and brass hook to hang it from the sash on Kamiko's kimono.

Though Kamiko considers herself American and much prefers firearms and doesn't usually carry a sword in combat, her inner samurai sometimes gets the better of her and in her off duty time, she often wanders off base wearing on a kimono, a sword and her Walther PPK.  She refuses to tell anyone what she does during that time, but the photographic evidence suggests she plays with her sword.

Mutant Hunter and Rocket Scientist

Next, Dr. Laura Neville, P.Eng has become a full-fledged member of "K" (Kimono) Troop, Pinup Patrol, and as such has been re-quipped with mode modern weapons than she previously had.  The flashlight equipped MP5 SMG is meant to be a modern equivalent to the improvised flashlight equipped Smith & Wesson SMG sometimes carried by Dr. Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) in The Omega Man. She's also gotten a Glock 9mm to replace her old S&W .38, not to mention a hand grenade. She is Kimono Troop's resident expert on hunting mutants, as well as their "Ms Fix It," whenever anything breaks. She is after all, an aeronautical engineer.

Luna Kabooma

Finally, a few months ago I received an S23B body and coupled it with a Kimi Toys KT005 head and named he Cynthia because I found itreminded me a lot of the first girl I ever had a crush on, way back in elementary school. Cynthia's last name is "Luna" and she's originally from Santiago, Chile, with prior service in the Chilean military.  Because she's a heavy weapons specialist, her barracks mates have nickname her "Luna Kabooma."

The bazooka is a ZACCA model of an M20A1 3.5" rocket launcher or "Super Bazooka" first used by US troops in the Korean War.  Overall, the model is not bad for the $4.99 I paid for it at Monkey Depot, but for some reason, the Japanese manufacturers thought it would look better with black plugs firmly glued at each end of the barrel than open as it should be. I don't now what they were thinking.  Not satisfied with this, I drilled holes into the plugs with progressively larger drill bits, though my largest bit was still smaller than the bore of the weapon and I had to ream out the excess with sharp knife. It's isn't visible in the photos, but I now have to sand the inside of the bore with some sandpaper to smooth out the rough edges left by the reaming.

As you can see from the photos, the Bazooka is quite large, quite true to the original.  This, and it's diameter caused a lot of problems for posing with a female figure as the females are smaller than the males. To boot, the figure's  firm silicone breasts tended to interfere with the weapon's shoulder rest.  I'm not sorry i bought it; I like the obsolete retro look of the thing, but had I known the problems with posing, I would have gotten an RPG-7 instead. It does break down into two pieces, just like the original and the real one, properly used could penetrate 11" of steel armor, so it could knock out any tank of the 1950's and most 1960's tanks as well. They were used in combat by Argentina as late as the Falklands War.

6. I’ve never had an issue putting HT hands on TBL bodies, though I’ve never had a need to go the other way.

As for #2...wow.That's it? Huh. I got a Conan set and the seller said/recommended the M35, putting the boots on the M34 was so hard. One of the pair tore apart just as I was getting it on. It's salvageable but only if you're not looking at it. I wish I posted this first.

#6...Anyone know offhand the diameter of HT wrist connectors?

It's so hard to pick only 3, but I'll do my best to pull from memory my top ones.

#1 - Old School Lara Croft is top rank for me. I haven't seen a decent version of her yet for sale. All of her parts could be easily used in other projects.



#2 - MK girls: Sonya, Kitana, Jade and Mileena, specially from the MK3 game (simple yet iconic). Why no love for MK characters in 1/6th market? I know this one was cheating, with 4 picks in one spot, but... hard to split them.



#3 - I-No, from Guilty Gear. She's an interesting and unique character with a lot of interesting parts (her guitar is mandatory, but could also come with a mic+stand and an amp). Her costume isn't very simple but not overly complicated. Even if you're not familiarized with the character or the game, I believe it's appealing and has room for anyone to easily tweak and make their own creation.



God, there's so many... but these are my top 3 (6, technically... 4 if you count Kitana, Jade and Millena as mere palette swaps... still not 3...).

You post three images at a time, once you post those first three, you don't have to post and re-edit your post. Once you "Insert" the first three images, you "Remove all", select the next three, "Send All", "Insert All", "Remove All" -- as many times as you like before you post your thread. It takes some time to get used to doing it that way, but in the end, I find it works the best rather than trying to use other Image hosting sites (since Servimg is the one forumotion uses).

Thanks again, GF. I reckon I wandered off in the weeds a little with the comment about my boys. Suffice it to say that they've turned out OK, thus far and I'm proud of them.

The color on this body turned out very well and the paint has held up except for the obvious spots where paint is going to get rubbed despite being careful when running. I've never been one to beat hell out of one of my builds. I'll leave that for someone who enjoys redoing their work over and over. I don't.

Installments XI and XII


Try though I did, I couldn't get that sorry bunch to help me with the following, so I had to go it alone.

The steering wheel was pretty "plain" looking. I contemplated making a new one, but scrapped that idea when I tried the following and really liked the way it looked.

I took some OD colored heavy nylon twine and simply wrapped it around the "business" part of the wheel. It was finished off with a light coat of superglue.

Here's the result:













And, of course, we can't have a restoration of an old rig like this without some leather (very thin, from an old purse my bride donated to the cause) on the seats, right? So, here we go, leather seats:

I've always wanted an RC vehicle that had an RC animated driver as well. I figured this was as good a time as any.






Despite our boy's protests, I removed his head (not a simple "pop-off-and-on" type. I cut a plate from his back using my trusty Dremel.

From there, I could access the slotted tabs that held the head on. With his head off, I ground out the tabs, thereby making space for a microservo. In the above photo, you can see how I altered his neck post to fit a circular servo horn.

Below, you can see how the servo fits in the chest cavity. It's not pretty, but I used hot-melt glue because of it's quick drying properties and the fact that I had to get the servo in the correct place in one shot. The glue gave me a little wiggle room, but didn't take two hours to set up.

The hole in the middle of the horn is what attaches it to the servo and it's splined to mate with the splines on the servo shaft. I was hoping for a friction fit and it worked. Still, his head comes off pretty easily, so I might be forced to make further alterations (i.e. put a screw in to hold the horn to the shaft. Very easy operation).

My apologies for the sloppy looking work, but it's going to be covered up by clothing anyway, so what the hell...



And, then he found the servo cord... It wasn't pretty.




Our boy was raising so much hell, I just put him in a drawer for a while to cool down some. When I went back to get him, he'd calmed a bit and was far more rational.




Here you can see the top of the servo in relation to where his head will be.






And, this is how the surgery turned out:





I explained to him that he'd be drivng the Jeep all the time, hence the modifications.





I, somehow, don't believe him...

Very well done. I was distracted and for a moment thought Sons #1 and #2 had accidentally trod all over it and it was a car wreck. But after the tape came off, I was able to see it in its true and pristine glory.

Installment IX

As earlier alluded to, this is a rebuild on an old thread. The sons referred to below have grown up nicely in the ensuing years ... for which I'm truly thankful.

The part about going to an official school visit was true, however, and it did make a nice segue into the question, "why do all the photos look like they were shot in hotel room?" They were. Had many hours to kill on those visits.



Good afternoon, all.

Been rather busy with son #2's baseball season (part of it...), but I made time for an update. Sorry it's been so long coming.

Recently I had occasion to take son #1 to an official college visit. He's a swimmer and the coaches will bring prospective students in for a weekend here and there. On this occasion, we went to East Carolina University in North Carolina. Since I knew I'd be stuck in a hotel room for a couple of days with very little to do (the coaches don't really want the parents around after about the first two hours), I took the project with me to work on. Of course, I had to deal with stowaways...









It took them a while to acclimate (an acceptable amount of bitching and moaning), but we soon got to work.

I had an el cheapo radio system sitting on the work bench, so I took it along. Instead of sitting still the whole time, I found occasion to search out a hobby shop for a few things and a Radio Shack for a battery.





On the platform there, the motor and transmission are already screwed into place. The main shaft going to the transfer case is also visable. All that will be under the hood once the body is mounted.















And, test it I did. Truthfully, it was geared really slowly...too slowly in fact. That was about the time I decided to upgrade to LiPo batties so I could run one with 11.0V and conserve space. Still, the tests went well. There was torque to all be damned. The bare chassis would crawl up a curb with no trouble at all. I did considerable driving through the hotel flower garden as that was the most challenging terrain available.

I was actually beginning to have a pretty good time until the powered chassis went dead. The motor would still spin, but there was no movement.

So, I picked up the chassis and went back to the room. I got there just in time to witness this:








Now, that's entertainment. Still, rules are rules and the guys and gals know they're not supposed to smoke. Back to the suitcase he had to go.








I'd needed an extra long section of drive shaft to bridge the distance between the transmission and transfer case. So, I put two Axial axles together with some brass tubing inside the plastic shaft and epoxied it all together. I reckon I discounted the amount of torque being sent to the transfer case. That was a mistake. It spun in two within 10 minutes with far less weight than the finished vehicle should have.

I've since replaced that shaft with a custom-made one in steel. It won't break again.

#1 Reverend Spooky was inquiring about the Running Press Table, though he may have already got one by now. Anyway for general interest here’s a better pic. $12.95 US. It comes with 3 LPs and each one plays a different 30 seconds of music, which doesn’t mean much to me for picture-taking purposes. I erroneously assumed they would actually spin (which would show as a nice blur in a pic) but they don’t. I think the turntable itself works in scale but the actual records look too big in the figure’s hand.

#2 From the World’s Smallest” Series, @$8 US. Unquestionably it is too small. Otherwise it would be just perfect. Nicely detailed. The record spins, a “strobelight” lights up. I am trying to remember if anybody ever made a record player, for kids maybe, that was smaller and played 45 rpms only. If so this could be a 1/6 version of that. It spins fast enough for 45 rpm.

#3 Rolling Stones Portable Record Player ornament. I have this but I can’t find it. Fun! It spins, plays Gimme Shelter. I was torn about converting it from a Rolling Stones promo item to a more generic portable record player. SO I made a plain cardboard insert for the lid, and put white tape on the front. Now I can have it both ways – or I could, if I could just find it. I believe they made similar ornaments for Elvis Presley, maybe others.



#4 This is one that I don’t have, I wish I did. It was a Hallmark Christmas Ornament in 2016 but it was sold out everywhere before Christmas, so I couldn’t find one when I got my general run of Ornaments for 1/6 on Boxing Day that year. Like the Running Press it detects different “records,” these being Christmas-sy. Scale seems good but I haven't had one in hand.

Oh man, don't get me started on phonographs now. The Downton Abbey ornament one works well. It may be very marginally underscale but phonographs weren't all a standard size, and it probably helps that phonographs are more remote to us than record players, historical, never a part of our day to day experience. Oh gosh, depressing thought, that's probably how "kids nowadays" relate to the record players. The most common phonograph for 1/6 would be from the "brass pencil sharpeners" series, and isn't bad. The horn looks credible so that phonograph only looks small if you look closely at the record area. There is also a phonograph made by ReMent or one of those "gashapon foods" companies, but that one is definitely too small.

I remember the Stones portable record player being perfect -- slightly less wide than the Running Press but a bit taller, and of course the lid is permanently up. I always take a "scale demo pic" of incoming items so I don't know why I didn't. It will turn up for sure -- one of these days I'll be in my basement and move Jimmy Hoffa's body and there it will be.

Sorry, you're right of course. Should I delete anything? Technically some of the instruments, mike stands etc shown in the last pic are Barbie items. The pianos were made for doll use, and part of the drums was (ugh) from a Justin Bieber doll set.

No, no, it's fine. I would never ask anyone to delete something (or delete it myself) unless it is truly inappropriate -- I do make suggestions sometimes but even that seems to hurt people's feelings (different instance, not this). It's just we have to be fair overall. But also in fairness, you were following up on ReverendSpooky's question. Besides, this includes Barbie items as you pointed out (I thought I recognized one or two). If it wasn't for the context, this could have been moved into the appropriate thread, but it's fine as it is.

The figures are all versions of Captain Action, Doctor Evil. One is my actual childhood one from 1967. A couple of the others are from the 1998 Playing Mantis version and the rest are from the 2011 version. Obviously it's a Collage so I don't have that crazy many.

Call this a Teaser from my eventual music-themed Post. I've actually done a little booklet about the 50 year career that these guys have had in the music industry, as the Evil Band. They're a little like KISS, a little like the Dead, and little bit like Forrest Gump because they've been everywhere and met everybody.

You will love it. It lights up, it plays music (which doesn't matter for photo purposes I guess) and it has movement in that the "pages" actually flip. In fact you can actually select different music by pressing the letter codes at the front. Awesomeness squared. I hope I didn't lead you to spend too much but I think you will find it worthwhile. Thanks for the comments on the Teaser for the Dr Evil Band. I'm most grateful you mentioned the Clash reference because the project contains dozens of music and pop culture references, some obvious and some very well hidden, so I hope people will find that amusing. There's a lot of narrative hidden or implied in the pics. You may tell from the back cover that I started this concept back in 2014 (at Christmas) so it's been a long time coming. The problem for me is that I still haven't done a couple of fairly complex photoshoots for it (like "the Evil play the Egyptian Pyramids '78" and "the Evil go to Sturgis") and unfortunately because the whole thing is laid out like a booklet, the incomplete gaps will be obvious. I have decided now however to just put it out there even with a few gaps -- partly because I figure here in OSF, "we're among friends," and people should be ok with that as a work in progress. May I say, I am nowhere comparing myself to your excellence but it was your Radio Kings repost that made me want to get this out there (along with the fact I showed off my pic with all the instruments, and the ball rolled from there).

$17 with shipping, which is a straight up steal. It was a drop everything and go buy it now kinda purchase when you showed it. Man, your collection of 1/6 pieces that weren't intended for 1/6 is awe inspiring. Be careful, I may start asking you weird "was something like this ever made in 1/6" kinda questions.

Chapter One is up now, I'm dying for your comments. You are never going to believe what that white flowing shirt is. It fits 1/6 OK, though it doesn't close at the back. Pic #1 isn't specifically anyone (unless unconsciously) but it's meant to be in the spirit of "Crawdaddy" magazine, which was Rolling Stone's poorer freakier cousin in the day.
