I can't tell whether this is really good or a little off. But I like it.

I like it too. Would be better with the helmet.

While it does look like him, it borders just a bit on caricature. It would have been nice to get a non-smiling head too.

Exactly, I think that is it -- almost a caricature and the smile is overly specific.
