Love it. Copper version is unnecessary imo as you wont see the difference except in pricing.

I like the black outfit sans armor for kitbashing

I still sometimes wish I'd purchased that "Jihad Pontiff" figure. I had no real need for it, but it looked pretty cool.

EDIT: Well... Monkey Depot still has the standard version of the Pope (no armor) in stock. Hmmm... what can I sell fast that I won't miss?

Annnnddd... speaking of Monkey Depot, pre-orders are open for the Swiss Guard figure:

Standard version - a mere $250 USD:  https://www.monkeydepot.com/CooModels_Pontifical_Swiss_Guard_Standard_Alloy_V_p/coom0193.htm

Exclusive "Cupro-Nickel" version - a bargain at $330 USD:  https://www.monkeydepot.com/CooModels_Pontifical_Swiss_Guard_Exclusive_Cupron_p/coom0195.htm

Estimated release date: Q4 2023

If all these Q4 releases come to pass, it's gonna be one heck of an expensive holiday season this year.  pale

The pope version or the one with the cool warhammer armor?
Pope Version is still available.

I originally had the armored version on pre-order, way back when, but cancelled the pre-order for something that was already in stock. I bet that armored version was wicked cool. Did anyone on the forum actually pick one up?

Valiarde

Valiarde
I bought the armor parted out for my dnd paladin. But I think someone ordered the whole figure too.

I saw these for preorder on Monkey Depot and am glad to see them here in their full glory (thanks, Mark!). I like them a lot, and they seem reasonably historical (I'm no expert on these relatively modern uniforms, although I wonder if the slashed pants would have quite that much in the way of openings) -- hence they are posed with the more plausible non-armored pope. I did pick up a bunch of the non-armored pope pieces parted out but haven't assembled a figure yet. This is tempting. But $250 for army builder figures seems remarkably wicked. And they tease us with the artificial guards in formation shot!

I've been eying these for some time. They both look really nice. I prefer the standard versions, which are actually accurate to the standard guardsman and captain (though I think it is actually a sergeant from my research). Both very nice....also very expensive, but would be nice to perhaps save up for 2 guards and a sgt and then looks like we will also be getting a Pope figure too.

I think that is the existing pope figure -- which was sold under some ridiculous machine translated or tongue-in-cheek title, like Jihad Pontifex.

Well they do have a ridiculously stupid job that has insane criteria to obtain and pays really badly too! Just a waste of talented soldiers in my opinion. The same with all parade guard troops from everywhere.

Yes, but they look cool and (in this instance) Renaissance-ish. Renessaince-y? Smile

Can you imagine how boring that aspect of the Vatican would look with some run of the mill pillbox-hat wearing policemen, even if wearing fine Italian footwear?

Yes, in Greece we have them (police armed with MP5's in pillboxes) everywhere! Outside embassies, residences of politicians and ambassadors, post offices, banks, airports (with tanks), some foreign schools etc.. but we also have the Evzones outside the house of parliament...

I was thinking of those, too. Many countries have something like this, but I can think of none as colorful and as archaic as the Swiss Guard of the Vatican, although the Scottish Guard comes close.

I don't remember DiD doing these guys, though they were made by a company called "Twisting Toys" as ELMAR: PONTIFICAL SWISS GUARD 12" ACTION FIGURE.  They were made very much in the old Dragon style of figure and packaging, so there could be some confusion, or actually if not then this would be third time around.  I do have one of those Twisting Toys ones and always regretted not having a guard set of two, but I suppose if I got one of these Coo ones, they wouldn't match up quite right.

Comparisons of these guys to parade guard troops aren't quite fair, insofar as it isn't a situation like say the UK, where the Beefeaters are one thing and the "real" soldiers are another.  The 135 soldiers of the Swiss Guard comprise the total and effective "army" and security force of the Vatican, which let's not forget, is fully a country, and one with some additional security sensitivities.  The Swiss Guards actually are fully trained and in modern times carry significant firepower, though probably not at the same time that they wear their flashy Renaissance outfits.

Namely: "For their protection and guard functions, the guards are equipped with Glock 19 and 26 automatic pistols, SIG 550 assault rifle (Stgw 90 ) and SIG 552 assault rifle (Commando), both in 5.56 mm x 45 caliber, OC-Spray and destabilizing devices (Taser X2). modernization of the already aging Stgw 90 (which was donated by the Swiss Army at the time), currently B&T APC 556 assault rifles and B&T APC 9 submachine guns are used."  See https://schweizergarde.ch/fileadmin/files/Paepstliche_Schweizergarde/Medienspiegel/2022/202201_K-ISOM_-_A._Micheli_-_Paepstliche_Schweizergarde.pdf   Which I mention in case anybody wants to kit them out to an extent Coo could have done, but didn't.

I've always wanted to see a scene, which would work in something like a John Wick movie maybe, where one of these guys wearing the flashy outfit suddenly displays super ninja level fighting skills.

I am often tempted to confuse Dragon and Dragon in Dreams (DiD) with products from back then. And very true, the parade uniform is only worn by part of the guard fulfilling specific functions; there is also plenty of modern equipment and garb, we just don't think of those.

I said DID because it was the most likely. That they are highly trained military troops is why I said they were a waste of good soldiers, then again Switzerland and the Vatican aren't exactly known joining wars ( the Papal States were another matter..). Ninjas didn't exist in the pop culture sense sadly (it just means spy). The Beefeaters have to have served in the military for 22 years, have been a warrant officer or high level non commissioned officer and have the medal of long service and good conduct to even be considered. The King's Guards (tall fur hats) are very much a real fighting regiment! A friend of mine nicknamed BFG was one and fought in Afghanistan and came back complete with PTSD, he's also a big Biker.
