999th Imperial Penal Battalion - 1/12 Star Wars
My side project, the 999th Imperial Penal Battalion. Before I started with 1/6 I thougt about getting a sideshow stormtrooper or clone. Gubernator recommended to mix the Bandai and Hasbro ones for less $$$/€€€. That's how I discovered th 1/12 Bandai Star Wars Kits. I started with a regular Stormtrooper and a Boba Fett and fell in love.
For me, the best thing in the Han Solo Movie was the Planet Mimban with his gritty, hopeless, endless war. Stormtroopers with not so shiny armor and a lot of dirt and smoke. I did not go that far to totally cover them in mud, but I wanted to have them grey and used. WIP are a Darth Vader with Stormtrooper helmet and MG as a Commander, a K2SO who will be painted grey (I think) and another Stormtrooper.
The 999th Imperial Disciplinary Unit is an Imperial Penal Battalion that consists of unwanted individuals who are still 'worthy of service to the Imperial War Machine"...cannon fodder. They are Soldiers with disciplinary problems or a death sentence on them, convicts, criminals, cowards, subdued rebel sympathizers, Ex-Police, rule breakers and many more...scum.
They fight in wars on worlds no one but their mothers have heard about. Their mums might be the only ones left who care about them. If they are lucky.
For suicide missions, smaller squads are formed from the Disciplinary Unit. Those lucky bastards have their right arms painted, to get at least some color in their life. The squads are led by former high ranking soldiers of the special forces, who for some sad reason had to join the 999th.
One squad who somehow survived multiple 'Suicides' is known as Error Squad:
Cpt. Cyskor "Tear" Undaron is the leader of Error Squad. He is a mysterious figure who likes to cultivate legends about his past, to inspire fear and respect in friend and enemy. For example, how did he get his hands on that Death Trooper Armor? His nickname's origins are also not quite clear, as the ones who called him like that for the first time are not among the living any more. Some say he can tear out a rebels spine with his bare hands. Or lift a Wookiee by his throat like Vader does with his officers. On the other hand, when unmasked, he can be seen contemplating, staring, with a hollow sadness in his eyes, like tears might burst out any minute, but never do. While some say he has stared too long and too deep into the Abyss of War, others claim his body was damaged by experimental combat stimulants.
Lt. Tazo "Pillbox" Calas was an Imperial Navy surgeon on a safe and cozy Star Destroyer. The years passed, life was good. While the Stormtroopers had to board enemy starships or lauch suicidal landing operations, he was in command of his own, state of the art medical bay. Then the doctor discovered a side business by faking medical discharges for unwilling conscripts. Try to keep that a secret! It went out of control, the authorities where alarmed. They connected the dots and also blamed him for stealing and selling painkillers from the medical inventory, which was probably not that far fetched.
Welcome to the gritty ground battles of the 999th, superbrain. Many parts of his stormtrooper armor are white, so good hearted rebels can identify him as a medic and shoot at his fellow troopers instead. But that won't stop him from taking rebels blood to keep his comrades alive.
(Alternative Nickname: "Stretcher", because he went from educated surgeon to a glorified stretcher bearer, what do you think?)
Rynn "Minefield" Starfield is the last survivor of a Penal Minesweeper Detachment that was ambushed by rebels. The detachment originally surrendered and the rebels entered the minefield to capture them. Someone fired - and then, chaos.
While soldiers of both sides were blown to pieces by mines and blaster fire alike, Starfield somehow managed to grab a T-21 Blaster and take out the remaining rebels. Rynn was later found by Error Squad, lying among torn limbs and bodies of comrades and enemies, eating their field rations. No questions were asked how Starfield became part of a Mine Sweeper Detachment consisting of sentenced convicts. Or how someone could have survived the grim battle in that Minefield. Or who shot first.
Left:
Atmal "AT-ST" Styvark is a Scout Sniper. Rumor has it he got involved in illegal hunting and smuggling of native species on a forest moon deployment. Some say he fragged or sniped his least favorite officer.
They call him AT-ST for his long steps. Or maybe it's AT and ST in his name...
To avoid confusion with the combat walkers, he is often called "AT", also fitting as he is able to quickly traverse all sorts of terrain by foot and speederbike.
Right:
Marlai "Jackboots" Yeshuk is a former member of CoruSec Special Law Enforcment, specialized in riot control and droid operations. During a massive peace protest on Coruscant, her unit was deployed in full force. When protesters started to tear apart her crowdcontrol droids, she struck down a young offender, broke his spine and severely damaged his skull. While he was not the only casualty that day, it turned out the victim was the son of an influental imperial bureaucrat...
There were differences how to treat Yeshuk, as she was a very competent and efficient cop, prison or labor camp would have been a waste.
So they called 999.
