999th Imperial Penal Battalion - 1/12 Star Wars

My side project, the 999th Imperial Penal Battalion. Before I started with 1/6 I thougt about getting a sideshow stormtrooper or clone. Gubernator recommended to mix the Bandai and Hasbro ones for less $$$/€€€. That's how I discovered th 1/12 Bandai Star Wars Kits. I started with a regular Stormtrooper and a Boba Fett and fell in love.

For me, the best thing in the Han Solo Movie was the Planet Mimban with his gritty, hopeless, endless war. Stormtroopers with not so shiny armor and a lot of dirt and smoke. I did not go that far to totally cover them in mud, but I wanted to have them grey and used. WIP are a Darth Vader with Stormtrooper helmet and MG as a Commander, a K2SO who will be painted grey (I think) and another Stormtrooper.

The 999th Imperial Disciplinary Unit is an Imperial Penal Battalion that consists of unwanted individuals who are still 'worthy of service to the Imperial War Machine"...cannon fodder. They are Soldiers with disciplinary problems or a death sentence on them, convicts, criminals, cowards, subdued rebel sympathizers, Ex-Police, rule breakers and many more...scum.
They fight in wars on worlds no one but their mothers have heard about. Their mums might be the only ones left who care about them. If they are lucky.

For suicide missions, smaller squads are formed from the Disciplinary Unit. Those lucky bastards have their right arms painted, to get at least some color in their life. The squads are led by former high ranking soldiers of the special forces, who for some sad reason had to join the 999th.

One squad who somehow survived multiple 'Suicides' is known as Error Squad:

The Old Clone Trooper 2dBMXdi

Cpt. Cyskor "Tear" Undaron is the leader of Error Squad. He is a mysterious figure who likes to cultivate legends about his past, to inspire fear and respect in friend and enemy. For example, how did he get his hands on that Death Trooper Armor? His nickname's origins are also not quite clear, as the ones who called him like that for the first time are not among the living any more. Some say he can tear out a rebels spine with his bare hands. Or lift a Wookiee by his throat like Vader does with his officers. On the other hand, when unmasked, he can be seen contemplating, staring, with a hollow sadness in his eyes, like tears might burst out any minute, but never do. While some say he has stared too long and too deep into the Abyss of War, others claim his body was damaged by experimental combat stimulants.
The Old Clone Trooper OQQrnyL

Lt. Tazo "Pillbox" Calas was an Imperial Navy surgeon on a safe and cozy Star Destroyer. The years passed, life was good. While the Stormtroopers had to board enemy starships or lauch suicidal landing operations, he was in command of his own, state of the art medical bay. Then the doctor discovered a side business by faking medical discharges for unwilling conscripts. Try to keep that a secret! It went out of control, the authorities where alarmed. They connected the dots and also blamed him for stealing and selling painkillers from the medical inventory, which was probably not that far fetched.
Welcome to the gritty ground battles of the 999th, superbrain. Many parts of his stormtrooper armor are white, so good hearted rebels can identify him as a medic and shoot at his fellow troopers instead. But that won't stop him from taking rebels blood to keep his comrades alive.

(Alternative Nickname: "Stretcher", because he went from educated surgeon to a glorified stretcher bearer, what do you think?)
The Old Clone Trooper LCA6KwR

Rynn "Minefield" Starfield is the last survivor of a Penal Minesweeper Detachment that was ambushed by rebels. The detachment originally surrendered and the rebels entered the minefield to capture them. Someone fired - and then, chaos.
While soldiers of both sides were blown to pieces by mines and blaster fire alike, Starfield somehow managed to grab a T-21 Blaster and take out the remaining rebels. Rynn was later found by Error Squad, lying among torn limbs and bodies of comrades and enemies, eating their field rations. No questions were asked how Starfield became part of a Mine Sweeper Detachment consisting of sentenced convicts. Or how someone could have survived the grim battle in that Minefield. Or who shot first.
The Old Clone Trooper XyaX8iF

Left:
Atmal "AT-ST" Styvark is a Scout Sniper. Rumor has it he got involved in illegal hunting and smuggling of native species on a forest moon deployment. Some say he fragged or sniped his least favorite officer.
They call him AT-ST for his long steps. Or maybe it's AT and ST in his name...
To avoid confusion with the combat walkers, he is often called "AT", also fitting as he is able to quickly traverse all sorts of terrain by foot and speederbike.

Right:
Marlai "Jackboots" Yeshuk is a former member of CoruSec Special Law Enforcment, specialized in riot control and droid operations. During a massive peace protest on Coruscant, her unit was deployed in full force. When protesters started to tear apart her crowdcontrol droids, she struck down a young offender, broke his spine and severely damaged his skull. While he was not the only casualty that day, it turned out the victim was the son of an influental imperial bureaucrat...
There were differences how to treat Yeshuk, as she was a very competent and efficient cop, prison or labor camp would have been a waste.
So they called 999.

Nice group, and interesting back story. Your pictures really set the characters up nicely. Like your rock diorama, it reminds me of some of the old Star Trek episodes.

Beautifully done, shot, and thought out! Hasbro now has a 6 inch "Mimban Stormtrooper" you can add to your group. Apart from the dirt and the tattered cape, the main difference is that he has an additional forehead plate on his helmet.

Awesome customs!!! Epic battalion, each one is very original and unique, with still a strong group feel, I really love it! The background story definitely brings them to life, can't wait to see more of their adventures!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I am actually making capes and scarfs for all of them. The Mimban Trooper looks great, but as I paint and weather the figures, he might look out of place with his original paint job. Maybe I will make a custom Stirnpanzer for one of my troopers.

I got me a 1/12 Bandai Trooper Han Solo and ordered some 1/12 heads. Bought more than I actually needed, but was not sure about the sizes, a lot of experimenting, Mr Ford serves as scale reference. Don't know if I will customize him into another person...
I combined every figure with every head. I also have 4 Boba Fetts as Mandalorians, I might post them later or in another thread.

The heads came in four sizes - too tiny, too big, normal and Christian Bale. While the Coulson and Will Smith heads somehow work on some figures, the short haired female head is just too small. Luke Cage, Arnie and John Hamm are very large, they only work on a Darth Vader Body.
But the majority fits quite well.
And then there is Christian Bale - he sometimes looks right, sometimes too large. It's strange.
The Old Clone Trooper NyjeDht

4 'normal' heads + 2 'tiny' heads and one absurdly large Arnie. As the shore trooper is shorter than the others and has much smaller feet, I think I will go with the female head.
The Old Clone Trooper KCJG8y4

For the rest, I only picked my favorite combinations.
The Death Trooper goes only with male heads. I think the Michael Keaton works best as old grizzled veteran. Also, Will Smith can do squad leaders.
The Old Clone Trooper Vyrhe4h

Coulson head fits best to the characters story, but I like them all. Also, Will Smith can do doctors.
The Old Clone Trooper QrfmBSq

I think both genders work for the heavy. Also, Will Smith can do hot shots.
The Old Clone Trooper M4HIDy1

Hm. Hmm. Don't know. Captain Imperium maybe? In will probably use the Kilmonger and the Mohawk guy for Mandalorians. Also, Will Smith can do snipers.
The Old Clone Trooper 7IehavL

Every misfit squad needs a nutjob. This is the Han Solo Stormtrooper, still only primed black. Dual E-11 Imperial Psycho. Christian Bale should really be in a movie about a psychopath or something. Also, Will Smith can do crazy.
The Old Clone Trooper IWiZ7Hc

What do you think? Let me know if you want to see other combinations I have not posted yet, I photographed them all.

They are from two sources -
https://www.ebay.com/usr/actionfigurecustoms

(Jon Hamm, Chris Evans, Christian Bale, very high quality, all in the same scale, but a bit larger than I needed them)

and

https://www.ebay.com/usr/jokabofe

(The other ones, a bit variying sizes, some mold seams, but still very good)

First attempt at a scarf.
The Old Clone Trooper UQkVSiO

Tried the female head.
The Old Clone Trooper 7AXlXcS

The Bandai Darth Vader. I gave him an MG and a Stormtooper head and turned him into a commander.
The Old Clone Trooper 1WAE5Wq

I think I will paint the armor pieces grey, not sure about the cape. Brown?
The Old Clone Trooper LM57nNH

I used the three largest heads on the taller Darth Body.

Darth Hamm. He looks very imperial.
The Old Clone Trooper Po7RnhV

Darth Cage. I don't like the open mouth, but that can be fixed.
The Old Clone Trooper VzHmqRQ

Darthnold. Still a bit too big.

Yep. There was even a German Penal Battalion called the 999th Light Afrika Division. I think the 999 is a fitting number. It has some...fatalistic feel to it.

Now some WIPS:

Touched up some minor casting errors with greenstuff and primed the heads.
The Old Clone Trooper DrLTb1j
The Old Clone Trooper TadC9g3

John Hamm on painted Darth Body.
The Old Clone Trooper ZLCiv2m

The new colors make 'Darth' appear less 'slender', just like the Death Trooper. Also Arnies Head is toned down now and I put a first layer of haircolor on him. So now there is less extreme contrast between body and head and he looks much more fitting. Reminds me of an Old Republic Jedi Knight.
The Old Clone Trooper LGqi1r8

Darth Arnie with Dengar turban, looking like a Jihadist on his way to Arrakis. A lot of painting and weathering left to do.
The Old Clone Trooper LN07NGa

Also in the making: A KX-Droid. I really think he is the best looking/designed (humanoid) droid from the entire Star Wars franchise yet. The Bandai Kit is great with perfect articulation.
The Old Clone Trooper ZoW7vTZ

I assembled him some time ago, now I found the courage to prime him and paint him grey. He will get much darker, damagier and dirtier.
The Old Clone Trooper J3ylVJ5

His right shoulderplate is red like the one from Yeshuka (Shoretrooper) as she is a specialist in Droid control and his 'handler'. Because a squad of faulty individuals needs a faulty emotional droid. A short biography will follow when I finisehd painting him..

Hah, yes I took that photo when experimenting with the 'shemagh'-thing I want to give them, don't know if I will use it later.

Finally got around to paint Arnies head. The only heads I ever painted were from little Warhammer40k Guardsmen and Marines...but I don't aim for high end paintjob so it's fine. He looks a bit cartoonish, might be too big eyes, on the other hand RL Arnold does look a bit like a RL Cartoon Character (in a cool way).

Looking good. To me he doesn't appear particularly cartoonish, though he does seem to have taken a mud bath and forgotten to rinse and wipe -- either that or been exposed to the sun and dust for too long without sunscreen and skin conditioning Smile But that is the grimey, weathered look you are going for, so I think it works beautifully.

Yeah he looks strange on the photos, I like him better in real. But you are right about that grimy muddy look, the headsculpt came with a texture that might have rubbed off some paint while drybrushig, maybe I will clean him up and start again.

I am not 100% sure on which character the sculpt was based on, but there is a version with a cigar, so I think it might be da Dutch. Maybe the texture was supposed to be some facepaint/mud, but you are the Arnie specialist here.

Thanks a lot!

A short story, a low budget version of Pontis Hulk-Buster post, haha:
I hesitated to order a bandai clone trooper, because the price ranges about 50€, I think that might be because of the Clone Army builders. But then the price dropped below 30€ for a while and I ordered one.
So I needed a Temuera Morrison head sculpt. They were expensive because of shipping costs.
So I bought a Black Series Captain Rex instead.
And while shopping, I discovered that Imperial Agent from Battlefront...

The Agent came with a rubbery E11 Blaster. I compared them to the Bandai-Blaster, quite the difference in scale...
The Old Clone Trooper HH9rGnm

On the other hand, the figure itself is shorter than the average Bandai Figure.
The Old Clone Trooper XymduuV

I don't know if this is supposed to be the female lead charater of Battlefront, but I decided it's a female character.
The Old Clone Trooper Zx0RlRV

The helmet pops of easily. The tubes are of a rubbery material and can be detatched.
The Old Clone Trooper 0KbmlvH

But I had to cut it off so the headsculpt fits. I will habve to worry how to re-attach it later, magnets oder pins maybe.
The Old Clone Trooper 925gEna

Remember that one female short haired head that was 'too small'? Now we have a fitting body.
The Old Clone Trooper DoVpBeu

Wel she is the smallest one of the team. Now I'll have to think of a Name/Nickname and a backstory, open for suggestions. I say she is just a pilot, not a super secret special agent.
The Old Clone Trooper CLHLzqo

All the three ladies of the Company in three different sizes, but no eyes yet.
The Old Clone Trooper ACetTyD

And now head#1 painted. I used one of those In-ear headphone..rubberthiniges to get some kind of flexible rubber neckpiece.
The Old Clone Trooper DDBX4LZ

Mounted on the body. I think I will prime the body black and paint the Armorparts grey to fit the theme.

Now for the Clone Trooper, also Bandai 1/12 Kit. Waited long to get one, because the price ranged around 50€. Got one when it was under 30€ for a short time. I guess the Clone Army Builders like them very much.

Fresh white young stiff plastic soldier whitout character. I like to imagine he was a regular clone trooper who first saw combat on Geonosis.
The Old Clone Trooper MAwgHDi

A later stage in the clone war, he became a veteran. He outlived many of his brothers and just can't die, it seems. His armor consists of differnet pieces from his fallen brothers. Now an aged veteran, he found his way into the 999th. I will write a little biography down some day.
The Old Clone Trooper 0LomUGr

Placeholder head. I will recast and customize a Cmdr. Rex head for an aged clone.
The Old Clone Trooper AmOyxi4

Dissassembled for priming. The Tie Pilot is also there.
The Old Clone Trooper CzXUVEb

All primed, a bit strange texture on the white plastic, everything fine on the black plastic. Sanded a bit and it was ok.
The Old Clone Trooper 6K2ZXEO

The Old Clone Trooper 13i3GFb

The Old Clone Trooper LiDcd2A

The Old Clone Trooper ByLjNDW

Some of the black primer came off to reveal the original white armor. I wanted to leav it at first, as all those clone armors where white, I guess. But it looked better in black/grey.

Man, I am lovin' these.

Some of those heads are definitely intended more for the Mezco/Marvel Legend buck instead of the Bandai or Black Series ones. Mezco/Marvel can run bigger, especially depending on the buck type.

I know some wicked casting sites if you need some links for more Star Wars stuff, or even just heads and weapons.
