Hello!
Following the withdrawal of the US from Puerto Rico in 1907 the new armed forces inherited some American guns with which the troops where armed, still as the years went on the Puerto Rican army became more and more outdated, at the outbreak of WWI it only had bolt action rifles and a handful of artillery pieces some of which dated to the late 1800's. By 1917 Puerto Rico's military was already starting to transform itself, the acquisition of new weapons had increased it's firepower this included the acquisition of a number of chauchat light machine guns. The decision to acquire these guns would lead to a lot of debate and contention, the trials by which they where submitted showed design flaws such as mud getting in the magazines and some troops injuring themselves with the back end of the LMG which earned the chauchat the nickname "La mula" or the mule. Nevertheless the National Army adopted it out of a need, the original chauchats where bought in 8mm lebel but where re chambered for the mauser cartridge locally, by 1920 the chauchat had also undergone a series of improvements, chief among it was the production of new magazines along with improvements on other areas that gave trouble.
The Chauchat would serve the Puerto Rican army and Navy until 1949 when they where replaced by the M1918 Browning Automatic rifle which would serve the nation's armed forces until 1963. As for the remaining chauchats, An unspecified number of them was sold, a handful of them remained in service with rear guard units and those that were neither sold, destroyed or stayed in service where simply stored at Castillo San Luis in case the nation ever needed of them once again.
What do we have here? Well if it isn't another alt history bash with a very cool weapon at least in my opinion. I've had this chauchat for a while now and I've always wanted to do something with it, it is not exactly the most accurate depiction of the weapon, but at least it has a very good "chauchat shape" that makes it easily identifiable. Changes to the original weapon where sanding off some of the wood grain from the metal parts, getting rid of a bar that kept the two legs of the bipod from spreading (not an issue), closing the windows on the magazine, adding the charging handle even if its location and design is inaccurate, and giving it some sling mounts. Overall it took me about two hours of on and off work on both the gun, pouches and slings.
Chauchat, the nation's light machine gun

Well that's all for today, this was something I had a lot of fun putting together, I've always wanted to do something with the chauchat because it is one of my favorite guns along with the lewis. I've actually expanded my original idea of making just a pilot and calling it done, so far I've done a national policeman, I also have a foreign volunteer tho I'm not sure on that name yet, the pilot (someday...) and at least three or four ideas ranging from a raider of sorts, to a sapper and a rebel. We'll see.
For now however stay safe out there and have fun doing stuff.
