I can see a bit of Joaquin Phoenix in there, and the neutral face is a lot better than the yelling one, no surprise there. To be honest, apart from issues with the "history" in the film, I didn't love this part of the casting, but that is not HH and HY's fault.

It is a decent rendition of the character in the movie and the head sculpt is ok. The horse is too big but it is nice to see a proper Roman horned saddle. It is a shame that they screw it up by adding stirrups.

I believe their stirrups are an entirely separate piece, so they can simply be set aside, no mod required, "no harm no foul." I do appreciate that the promo pics, and all the people who will use the stirrups automatically because they find them in the box, are a form of misinformation.

How did you gauge that the horse is too big? Is it based on the movie or the era?
Just asking because I'm genuinely curious and the pic of Commodus on the horse looks quite proportioned to me.

While I have no doubt your general proposition is correct, you can't apply the size of horse as if it was some kind of hard "spec" like a sword length or whatever. 15 hands is pretty average for what we are used to: typically anything smaller is called a pony or a miniature horse. As I understand it, larger horses were not the typical breed in Rome itself, and they were not particularly desirable because a larger horse isn't better for drawing a chariot (whether racing or transport). Also the Romans didn't typically use horses in farming, where larger size would be an asset. But even if "Roman warhorses were only 13-14 hands tall" typically, one specific one being larger isn't out of the question. And then you need to take into account this is not a Roman Warhorse. It's the show horse the Emperor is riding in his maximum pomp. Meaning, there's a decent chance that this would be the single tallest horse that anyone could find for him anywhere within the Roman Empire, which spans three continents, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Not a perfect likeness, but close enough. If I were to get this, I'd get the white version.

Good call on the saddle, Dan, I didn't even notice. I've tried to sculpt one myself, but haven't completed the experiment.

The horse is fine if you are trying to replicate the one in the movie. It is too big if you are attempting a historical one.

Horses in general weren’t nearly that size at the time, and aside from anything else it doesn’t look all that great tbh. I appreciate the fact they’ve gone for a chunkier build than the average generic horse model companies seem to produce, but those feet are absolutely atrocious. :/ I really wish they’d show photos of it without tack so we can get a proper look at the sculpt.

I'm sorry. but most respectfully, you guys are just wrong. It's fine to want to show off a bit of broad historical knowledge, that horses were generally smaller in the classical world, but you may well be missing what you are specifically looking at in this case. In the classical world e.g. Thessalian horses were in the range of 14.2 to 15 hands (see eg. Horse Breeds and Breeding in the Greco-Persian World: 1st and 2nd Millennium BC by Thomas Donaghy, and The Horse in the Ancient World by Ann Hyland) so it's totally reasonable that the tallest horse in all the world -- the one they scoured Europe, Africa and Asia to find, and to bring back to Rome, to curry favour with the Emperor -- would be within the upper end of that normal range.

Well yes, that’s true (I was thinking from a U.K. perspective where our horses on average didn’t get to around the 15hh mark til the Tudor period, oops) but build-wise it’s unlikely to have been that kind of hairy stocky type as to my understanding the Thessalian horse and similar breeds with an eastern influence were fine boned and clean legged, not unlike the modern Akhal Teke and similar today.

The neutral head looks ok. The screaming one is scary heh, but that's just me.

Did the emperor swap his white armor for Quintus's armor, HHToy?

He wore the armour and blue cloak/tunic at the start of the movie.

Not my thing, as I find the romans irritating. 

I do however appreciate the detail and differing colours of the armour I would like it however if perhaps they could do the sets as separate items as well as figures, I'm sure the companies would make more than doing individual figures.
