Very interesting. I'm glad they did two head sculpts, and they look great, although they don't exactly "scream" Caesar to me. The display bust is also a good idea, given we get two sculpts. I think they gave him too much hair, and he liked wearing the laurel wreath precisely to disguise his increasing baldness. Maybe the laurel wreath should have been a bit "bushier," too. Some aspects of the equipment don't look convincing to me, like the helmet or the bracelents/vambraces (they are obsessed with providing those to their Roman figures). What do our horse experts think of the horse? Looks a little off to me, but I'm not all that familiar with horses.

Wonder if they were going for something vaguely 'Rex Harrison as Caesar in Cleopatra (1963)'?

yeah this is from the movie "Cleopatra" and not historical Caesar busts. That explains his likeliness and hair.

LOL, yeah. But not just its face being so angry, it's the entire thing... the 'body' (if you can call it that) looks like it was sculpted by a kid out of playdough. Honestly, I am embarrassed looking at it.

Sky, you are probably right. The detail on the breastplate is the same. And the head sculpt does look like him. So my problems, if any, with Caesar are more with the 1963 casting choice than with HH/HY's execution.

I have no problem with the Rex Harrison sculpt, though I guess they could have gone with Ciarán Hinds for fresher memories and maybe more marketability. I don't actually understand why people have a problem with Rex Harrison here as Caesar, unless it's just that he connects to the superficiality and artificiality of the 1963 film, but we don't have to let that carry over to the current figure. Setting that aside it looks to me like a good face for Caesar. We don't really have any clear specific contemporary evidence of what Caesar actually looked like. And as to Harrison as Caesar, I've got the unexpectedly decent Mattel Liz Taylor Cleopatra figure, so putting them together will be amusing.

My disappointment with this figure is for much of a different reason. I really would have hoped that doing Julius Caesar they could have gone for more of a patrician Roman citizen, Senator, toga look rather than (or in addition to) the "routine" soldierly look. As it is we get HY's 10th or 15th Roman Soldier, now with Rex Harrison's face. They could so easily have given us something different and distinctive with an urban/political look that would then have been unique. And if they had made that the "bonus" of the Deluxe version, it wouldn't have taken anything away from the military aspect in case they think that is the only Roman Empire stuff that sells.

Looks like Rex Harrison to me too, which is pretty neat, but he has way too much hair. By the time Caesar started to go grey, most of it had already fallen out. The cloak is the wrong colour; Tyrian purple is actually maroon. However, it looks like they were copying the costume and armour worn in the movie rather than trying for historical accuracy. In that respect, it is a pretty good likeness.

I like their horned saddle but they messed it up by adding stirrups. The whole point of using those types of saddles was because they didn't have stirrups. The front horns should be longer and curve around more to help lock the legs in place. But I'm not sure how well that would work with their hard plastic figurine. You might need a TBLeague figure to get the proper thigh articulation for a Roman horned saddle. It would have been neat to see a Roman horseshoe (hipposandal).

I agree with Dan on the saddle, and on the potential problems getting the figure to sit properly on it.

That struck me too. Stirrups appaerd much later in Europe.
But I guess it's an easy mistake to make. I haven't seen the movie, but I guess if there are horses in there, they would have stirrups too.

Yeah, but anyone who says Caesar doesn’t look like this (Rex Harrison) can’t say what he does look like.  So what was HY to do?  All known representations of Caesar are dated well posthumously, so let’s think about what that means, in an age where the sculptor couldn’t work from photos or film footage or anything other than, at best, maybe verbal descriptions from old men working from old memory only of Caesar seen from a distance, if that.  And those portraits are not really even consistent with each other.  Coins as you mention weren’t really meant to be physiognomically precise (as it’s unlikely Caesar sat for a portrait) and they don’t convey much detail anyway.

We could have a whole discussion whether the characteristics we think we see in any particular face are anything real and meaningful, but if our generally accepted social conventions mean anything, then the general structure of Rex Harrison’s face conveys what we expect for Caesar (intelligence, sophistication, leadership, etc).  Again that’s just going by facial structure, wholly purged of assumptions from the 1963 movie or Rex Harrison himself generally.  It’s interesting that the one Caesar bust I think you mention, that may or may not have been contemporaneous, looks nothing like we would expect Caesar to look (more Rod Steiger-ish or even Edward G. Robinson) so HY wasn’t going to use it even if they researched that deep.

The one found in the Rhone river was probably sculpted while he was still alive. To me it looks like a life study rather than a stylized impression. As far as I'm concerned this is what Caesar looked like. It perfectly represents someone who spent the majority of his adult life on military campaign and was in the thick of the fighting many times.

Well, we can respectfully agree to disagree about that.  I agree it's a life study rather than a stylized impression but that's it. On that Rhone River bust (the Arles Bust), Wikipedia says the following:

"Classicist Mary Beard objected that there was no basis whatsoever for identifying it as Caesar, and accused the discoverers of staging a publicity stunt.[6] Other historians were also quick to dispute the identification, among them Paul Zanker, an archaeologist and expert on Caesar and Augustus.[7] Many noted the lack of resemblances to Caesar's likenesses issued on coins during the last years of the dictator's life, and to the "Tusculum bust" of Caesar,[8] which is accepted as a depiction of Julius Caesar from his lifetime, based on its similarity to the coin portraits."  

On the other hand the Tusculum Bust (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tusculum_portrait) could arguably bear more similarity, coincidentally I am sure, to Rex Harrison's facial structure.  But we're getting a bit away from the HY Toys.

Yes, MBAM, I am perfectly aware, as already indicated in my comment, that most images of Caesar, other than coins, are posthumous. I also know the Tusculum bust is arguably the only contemporary one, and I do not see Rex Harrison in it (or vice versa). Much has been written about realism (and sometimes idealism) in Roman art, but it is certainly not particularly flattering, so I'm willing to consider it reasonably realistic. But not all other posthumous busts of Caesar were produced long after him -- and artists could have been familiar with him, or with now lost portrayals with him, with descriptions of him, etc. The one below, which is actually how I imagine Caesar (with a big nose), is supposed to have been made between 44 and 30 BC. And it is not very flattering either (except perhaps for too much hair). The coins are, admittedly too small to be truly accurate portraits, but even if resorting to a level of cartoonist abstraction -- if necessary -- they tried to convey something recognizable in their portraits. Again, in this instance (and in many others), they appear to be devoid of flattery.



I have nothing against Rex Harrison, and if HH/HY decided to base their figure on a movie role, that's fine. He just doesn't look like preserved portraits of Caesar. And they ought to be our point of departure, to the extent that we have any interest in something approaching historical accuracy.

the toga idea would have been nice i suspect a lot of Brutus stabbing scenes would be made.

Me I'd do a better one, ok more fantasy! but the site of a big battle with British on the field and the roman troops including him dead maybe one of the h/s on a spear!

Speaking of historical, some time ago I skimmed through this online project 'scan the world' were exhibition pieces, mostly sculptures, from museums are scanned and turned into free high detail 3d models. I found dozens of Napoleons (and Napoleons mum) and many many Caesar busts. I learned to cut 3d Busts into head sculpts for 3d printing. But I don't make historical figures. But others do. Like Pizarro. The one with the Morion helmet.
That is all I am saying enough spoilers!
