Copying MiskatonicNick's method of creating modular sci-fi backgrounds using foam core, spray paint and odds and ends. The technique I used will be explained in my next post.

Okay, this is what I've been working on, somewhat imperfectly for the last few days.  The inner ring of the porthole or view port is made made from a wooden macrame ring, the larger and flatter outer ring from the shiny cardboard top to an aluminum food dish; cost: 3 for $1.00.  The rivets are more of the small rivets I've been using for the bulkhead joints and the whole was spray painted in light gun metal with Tamiya acrylic spray. The planet and starfield behind the view port were added in using Photoshop.

Another very effective solution.

That’s pretty cool, and a nice simple way to do this.

Love the modular walls!
One trick I learned for rivets when I was studying modelmaking at college was to use split peas/lentils! Obviously they’re a tad big for most 1/6 scale stuff but for building pieces or 1:1 scale stuff they’re resally effective!

Thanks Christine. I picked up the technique for the modular walls from the late MiskatonicNick, though mine are so far, not as detailed as his. Still...foam core works great.

More space means... more space stories!

It also means you'll need more figures to fill the space! Razz

That dialog is cracking me up, particularly Spock geeking out over his model kit!

Nice additional wall panel. The jokes in the latest pic were pretty funny.

I shot the photo while my cousin was over visiting, then the two of us spent a good while coming up with the dialogue, going through several versions before we were both satisfied it was funny enough.

I never knew him personally but I used to pore over his photos on Flickr when I was jus getting into 1/6 scale stuff. His sense of humour and attention to detail was unparalleled and I was gutted to learn of his death a few years ago. I think he’d love your setup!

Dal (BlondeActionMan) knew him and Nick shares many of his tricks with him, which is doubtless why Dal's dios look as good as they do; he learned from Nick. Dal also has recently been sending me something you won't find on Flickr; some of Nick's early comics, which are downright hilarious, as well as being highly creative. Though you get a glimpse of his sense of humour from the photos on Flickr, the comics show much deeper, sillier and downright hilarious side to the guy.

It's been a while since I tackled a "junk" project, so here we go:

Foam Core, Styrofoam, Spray Paint and Household Junk. Vent1
Pizza box, paper towel tubes, hot melt glue, a little bit of left-over spray paint
and a string of holiday lights.
Also useful: ruler, pen or pencil, scissors, and a pocket or craft knife.

Foam Core, Styrofoam, Spray Paint and Household Junk. Vent2
Cardboard tube, like from Pringles Chips, with a broken bit of plastic I found on the ground
glued in to it and a hole drilled in the opposite end to shine a light through.

Foam Core, Styrofoam, Spray Paint and Household Junk. Vent3
Glue it all together, plug in the lights, and ya gots yer "Ninja Turtles" style
sewer/dungeon/abandoned warehouse

It is marvelous what you can make from such items.

That looks so good! Amazing what you can do with garbage materials. Amazing that you thought of it! In my household these things just disappear with no second thought.
