Wow look at that beautiful orc, fantastic weathering on the armor and on his outfit too, he's starting to look like he's wearing a few pounds of gear.

Thanks GTF! Well I build so much armour in 1/6 it would be rather embarrassing if I couldn't make it look like metal! Wink You realise the life size Uruk-Hai shield and sword are steel right? I got that distressed effect by leaving it out in the rain and pissing on it regularly! Very Happy

Valiarde wrote:Wow shovelchop that looks great - really like out of the movie, nicely used look and dirty. Great chop - I will have to check more of your thread later. Time is always a thing I need more of.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my thread Valiarde! I'm terrible at visiting other threads which I apologise to everyone out there for, I'm just (egocentric) so focused on building my stuff.

Theboo-bomb wrote:Wow look at that beautiful orc, fantastic weathering on the armor and on his outfit too, he's starting to look like he's wearing a few pounds of gear.

Thank you TBB! He certainly is wearing some very heavy armour (in a real world scenario), I have the steel shield (pictured above) and that alone weighs around 5kg! This is no fancy light weight Milanese armour like the Gondorians wear.

shazzdan wrote:"Looks like meat's back on the menu boys!"

LOL, not sure he'll get a chance to eat any before he's killed by 'magic' Elven arrows. Why didn't they use a repeating bolt thrower or something similar to defend against these guys in the movie or am I forgetting something?

(surprised you didn't call me out on this) His bevor/gorget was blocking his helmet from turning far too much so I've cut it back and folded it down, not a cool looking but now he can turn his head!

That turned out amazing. All the work to put this guy together — from the body to the armor — is astounding. Well done, Alex.

Ahhhh, he looks fantastic!! One question though, you’ve mentioned fibre card a few times and I’m still trying to work out exactly what you mean by that. Laughing It seems very useful!

That last picture is great, what you’ve got there are the two most famous subtypes of orc; the Uruk Hai…and the Uruk Low. XD

Really didn't like the look of the modified gorget so I made him a new one that still allows the head to turn wearing the helmet with those long tusks, the gorget in this instance could be used as a weapon in its own right, pick up a puny human and bash his head against that spike it has and instant 'brain soup' in a "coconut!" Twisted Evil . Transferred the rivets to the new part, still needs paint but I'm painting all the weapons using the same colours needed now anyway. Talking of weapons, threw together a crude looking 'full metal' battle/breaching axe since these shock troopers would be at the front of the lines and first to any doors etc.. which is why I left the axe blade thick unlike a Dane axe etc.. as this would be used for bashing armour and wood/stone. I also popped into my tiny garden while the kettle was boiling and managed to find two virtually straight  sticks/branches that are the right diameter and length to make one of those crazy long pikes they use. Still not 100% sure how they would be used by a sieging army, I can only think they must be used (yes I've seen Skallagrim's  video on the  LOTR weapons and if they would be any good in reality, spoiler: the answer is yes except for Elven arrow tips and Gimli's double headed axe, his other axes are fine) to harry and impale any archers leaning over the parapets to shoot at a downward angle and also to help erect the siege ladders, defend them and be placed into the rungs at a shallower angle than the ladders themselves and the bottom of the pikes driven into the ground or held in place by soldiers to pin the ladders against the wall preventing them from being pushed back (even though the ladders also have the clever hinged boarding hooks like the Romans used on their ships). I hope that all makes sense, hard to explain without diagrams but that's my thoughts on why they went to the huge trouble of making all those hooked pikes. Where were all the trees that long and straight is the bigger mystery to me! Wink

Is that from 'The Fastlane' sketch show? Damn I was still doing my art foundation course in Bournemouth back then (hated the place full of snobs).

Okay here's the beginning of the 'Battle Of Helm's Deep' that feature these particular Uruk-Hai, amazing and confusing as to just how many pikes they have! And oh dear, someone yells 'fire' instead of 'loose' to the archers Rolling Eyes Mad which is just SO wrong, they're now even debating if historically any particular command was given apart from a superior or messenger from the front/command post just yelling 'archers'. 'Fire' obviously wasn't used until the age of guns and probably not until the British or French started using volley fire and organised shooting procedures.

I was talking to some archery historians about fire/loose and they reckon that both are modern. One stems from the advent of firearms and other is a Hollywood affectation. According to them the command at the time was simply "shoot".

LOL, in their defense, at least at first "fire" was subtitle translation into modern English. I wonder what Tolkien wrote, if that detail goes back to him. At any rate, interesting. Dan's report makes sense.

Beautiful work, Alex, I love the new helmet too. And great to see it is going to be more functional. That is the thing about your builds -- accurate, sensible, and functional all rolled into one. Glad we got to see more of your glorious completed Uruk-Hai head, too. And apparently you improve 1:1 objects too, with organic approaches that might not be to everyone's taste. Wink

So more or less what I said then, although I believe once an instruction to start shooting was given whether it be a verbal command or more likely a visual one such as raising a flag/pennant or sounding a horn which would be much clearer, the archers then shot at will until a signal was given for them to stop, so their cavalry/infantry could move forward and to save arrows for direct line of sight engagement with the enemy as archers' volley fire is in reality more of a harassment to demoralise enemies and potentionly break formations than it is a lethal engagement like direct line of sight.

All weapons apart from the pike are finished now, I have to steam the wood to make it perfectly straight which will be a new technique for me and I hope it works! I have an arrow straightening tool but that is for aluminium arrow shafts not wooden ones. Painted the eyes and teeth, hair next, also added more clear coat to all the armour etc.. and painted the claws white for now.

Shovelchop works quickly, and it's all coming together so well!!!

I keep thinking about the mystery material, and the only thing I can think of that seems similar is perhaps some kind of stiff felt ?

I know it's used for making curtain pelmets and milliners use it too in the process of hat making.

Just some updates, trying to straighten the wood by soaking it then clamping it to a radiator, painted weapons, armour, nails, eyes, mouth etc..

Your head repaint update looks very expressive. Most eyes except done by a few exceptional professionals would probably look like that (or not nearly as good) in macro photos too. But I bet they really pop from a more natural distance. Besides, one would barely get a glimpse of them under that helmet in normal conditions. I think you did a great job with him.

I second what GF says....sometimes eyes don't need to be extremely precise, especially from a distance. But if you are frustrated with using the paintbrush for eyes, you could try drawing them on with a sharp watercolour pencil, instead. It does require 'setting' them in some manner with a spray varnish (or carefully dotting on some kind of varnish with a brush),  but I've seen people use that method quite successfully.

Regardless, I think he's turned out amazing! I especially like how the skintone looks, it's quite striking.

If you mean a support in between layers of cloth material, then yes that's exactly how they use it, hat makers may even just paint it or dye it then seal it with a clear coat.

Thank you so much for the moral support there GTF! And yes having a 64mgpl camera can have it's downsides! A bit like how you can now see everyones' acne and blackheads on on tv now a days! Shocked Laughing

Thanks for reminding me I have water colour pencils, used them on a Dwarf build recently but completely forgot about them! Embarassed Yes they do work well but you have to be so careful on what clear coat you use and how to apply it, I remember losing two days work of drawing repetitive complicated patterns for Ori then washing them all off by mistake using a water based clear coat.

Redid the eyes a bit nothing drastic just tried to sharpen the edges etc.. The main job today has been the hair, I hadn't realised how little black hair I had left and how short and curly it was (sounds dodgy but it isn't I swear! Laughing ) so I first had to straighten it with heated tongs and then integrate it with other colours I had more of, luckily Uruk-Hai hair is a mix of black and browns and quite dreadlock like, I was watching a bit of a 'Behind The Scenes LOTR' from the extended DVD box set yesterday and it just happened to focus on filming a daytime scene of Merry and Pippin being held as prisoners by the Uruk-Hai so I got a really good look at their hair in daylight on set. I padded the helmet to protect the paint on the face and keep it in place as it's quite a tight fit now, pretty much perfect with the hair, and removed a bit of card from the inside and eye slit. The pole has come out straighter for the pike. Need to finish building that and finish painting the claws, make belt for the axe and I'm pretty much done I think.

Cheers GTF! I was quite pleased with it myself especially as it's made from scraps woven together! Luckily they didn't have long black straight shiny hair!
Built the pike now, just needs paint. I started with a metal 'skeleton' for support of the blade and had to glue the metal together which can be tricky so I scuffed it up with a file to increase the surface area and create a texture for the glues to grip to and cleaned any grease off with acetone. As super glue is a chemical reaction it has no effect on stainless steel so it won't bond it very well if at all; therefore I used my old trick of applying Bison Universal glue for stickiness then super glue as a hardener. Then cut the blade's actual shape with mounting collar out of fibre card, sawed a groove in the top of the wooden shaft to insert the tang of the metal support gluing it in place with super glue, which I continued to apply to the shaft using a plaster spatula all the way down to create a protective coating to the wood which is very light and fragile. I then glued on the fibre card 'blade' sections, securing the collar and stiffening the edges with super glue, then applied PVA all over the whole weapon and left to dry by the heater.
I painted smokey ink on all the claws/nails and head's hairline, then a coat of clear gloss to them and the eyes, mouth, nose etc.. Made a leather belt with a loop for the axe, wrapped the axe handle with real leather just for looks (not historically accurate) and the sword's grip with the same leather.

Great job on the pike -- and thanks for the lesson on gluing metals. I'm sure you have done your homework, but I was surprised at how relatively light the color of the shaft. Beautiful additional work on the features. And those claws are really something. I can just imagine him walking into a nail salon for a mani-pedi and all the girls working there running out screaming. Smile

You were falling backwards? I hope no damage to yourself or your creations! And given the complexity, eclectic nature and composition, and the sharp metal bits, that would be quite a reasonable concern. Smile He looks excellent, and so does his pike. The difficulty of photographing it (if one is to get all of him and the pike in) is understandable. I'm very pleased with your creation and grateful we got to witness it up close. Cheers!

Cheers! All good, I am just tired and have dodgy knees from bike accidents in the past so crouching to take a few pics just ended up with me falling back comfortably into the couch! Laughing Embarassed No harm done to myself or anything around me but thanks for the concern.
I've been thinking of making him a flaming torch like the ones they hold in that opening battle scene of Helm's Deep but I can't find my bag of orange/red/yellow resin flames I cast years ago for the Western Ghost Rider build on the skeleton horse I made that glow in the dark, must be somewhere, saw it recently.
