Background

It started as a conversation with BAMComix in the Black Series thread. I said it would take some time, and it's still true as I don't have the comic book Leia figure yet and I intend to use some parts of it. However, I became intrigued with what I can build from bits and pieces lying around in my accessory storage boxes...

More posts to come once I get more pieces. I'll try to document the process, but probably not with shovelchop's level of details.

Analysis

So this is inspired by comic book Leia figure from Hasbro's Black Series line:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) F25c75711dca350081cd5a38a7bc690ef6ea805a

Which is itself inspired by this appearance shown on the figure's box:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) 71UzMl7fJGL._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_

I don't intend to replicate it exactly. Hasbro's figure isn't 100% true either: their comic line tends to reuse existing molds, so Hasbro is effectively kitbashing these figures from their own parts. I'm pretty sure the base body is from Hoth or Bespin Escape figure:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) IMG_1577

it depicts rather thick garments, presumably with some padding or layers to keep her warm on the icy planet. Some comic appearances are close to that, as far as I can tell:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) 81Eq7Oa0RCS._SL1500_
(but note white or very light beige gloves)

Others show her in more tight-fitting suits:

So I don't know yet what my final version will look like.

But I have a prototype, so let's dive into the

Execution

So I happen to have the BroToys body lying around:
No explicit details though:
It is quite decent. Very similar to VeryCool bodies but a bit slimmer and shorter. And with tighter joints.

I don't remember whether it came with the boots. Probably not. But I have the boots from one of their Alice figures:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) S-l1600

Now, Leia's boots usually lack details in her comic appearances, so maybe these ones have too much going on. But I'll leave them be. More importantly, she is often depicted with black boots (though not always).

Next up, the suit. I've bought this turtleneck/tights set, in both black and white, a long time ago (but in this galaxy):
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) S-l1600
The picture lies about the scale, it actually shows a 1/6 version which looks much better.
I haven't found much use for it until now because it results in too many layers around the waist, which would work OK for life-size clothes and likely 1/6, but not too well in 1/12. For a prototype, though, it will do.

Last but not least is the head. In the absence of the comic-book figure I have to pick one of these:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_0011

And Hasbro heads are quite hard to swap, so that leaves me with SHF.

Putting it all together:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8215

Hands are also from BroToys Alice, blaster is from SHF Leia.
The head does not sit right, joints are not fully compatible. It can be improved, but I'll use another head anyway.
What bothers me more is the waist area - too much bunching there. Maybe the belt will improve it, but ideally I need a bodysuit. I think Leia wears one-piece suits in these appearances.

Finishing touches:

I don't think I can find white or brown gloves she has on those comic reference pictures. But I have black gloved hands from BroToys and black leather-like "sleeves" from PWToys Ada:

Are you talking to me?

And the last for today is the cape (which I bought for Linda but she doesn't mind sharing it for a while):

So that's my prototype. Further improvements - when they arrive: belt and holster, a different head, and hopefully a bodysuit. Thanks for looking and stay tuned!

Very nice custom so far. In fact, I'm not sure it really needs improvements, except maybe a belt, if it hides the end of the top.

Yeah, maybe I can leave it like that if the bodysuit idea won't work, but I don't want to keep my SHF Leia without head.

Excellent-looking custom!

I'm not familiar with comic-book Leia, but, wow, I love that outfit. Easily my favorite Leia outfit.

She's looking great already! But I do think she needs that belt. It is so iconic and makes for a more rounded look. I'm looking forward to seeing where you take her! Smile

Nice job so far! I had no idea those type of boots were available in 1/12 scale, that's awesome to know. Very Happy

And I enjoy this outfit on Leia as it combines her own style with Padme's iconic Geonosis costume.

Same here. I didn't know about this look until I saw the figure (admitedly around two years ago), and I like how this look can fit into any context.

skywalkersaga wrote:I had no idea those type of boots were available in 1/12 scale
The boots are "peg-type", they are designed to plug into ball joints at the ankles of this body. They are made of soft plastic, so there is some ankle articulation. Not much though. PC Toys boots are better.

Diana wrote:But I do think she needs that belt. It is so iconic and makes for a more rounded look.
I agree, the belt is a must.
Found Jill Valentine clothes kit (from GPSLot) in my storage. It comes with this belt:

It's closer to Mezco scale, seems too bulky on her. And obviously the configuration is different. But it gives some idea of how she will look with belt and holster.

YES!! It's not perfect, but it'll do for now as it immediately creates that Star Wars vibe. Smile

There have been no updates for almost a month, and the reason is shipping delays. And other shipping issues.
But patience was never among my traits, so while the Hoth Leia headsculpt was stuck without updates for two weeks, I've bought another full comic book figure - and that got me moving finally:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8314

This gave the head and the belt, and the overall look is starting to satisfy me:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8313

The aforementioned head arrived a day later of course. And of course it has a different socket size. Why did I expect intercompatibility within the same line from the same company? That is so silly... Anyway:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8315

Originally I wanted this head to put it back on my first comic book Leia figure. But it will require modifications.

It works for my custom figure - BroToys neck joint is tiny, it requires some padding:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8316

Another thing I've tried is the Jedi cloak (in the style Luke wore in ROTJ - without sleeves, jot a full robe):
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8317

But the thing is, I prefer the comic book head:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8319
Hey, Leia went through Jedi training in pre-Disney canon (and I don't want to explore Disney canon here)

And today another shipment from my original batch of orders arrived - the cloth cape specifically intended for the comic book Leia figure:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8320

It's quite nice, but I generally prefer non-wired capes (the cape from the OP has a wire only in the neck). So this is something I'll decide on later.

Anyway, this is what I have now. I need to deal with two remaining issues: playability and scale.
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8321

My figure is currently too tall for Carrie Fisher:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Tumblr10

But I have no other reference point. So maybe I'll wait for the first third party cloth Star Wars figure to arrive, or try to do something with ankle extenders of this body.

On the subject of playability, I need to print an adapter for the head joint. As it is now, the socket is too large, even with my usual rubber piece it's not tight enough.
But the holster belt significantly improved the waist area. I have to pull the top piece down from time to time, but it is much better than it was.

I still want to try a jumpsuit. I've ordered one along with the head and the cape, but the seller sent it in wrong size - for male body, large enough to fit on the Nowhere Toys body.
So I present you:

Now I'm waiting for another jumpsuit to arrive (and the seller of the first one promised to ship a replacement too, though I have some doubts about it). But even the current look is good enough for me.

Nice progress, and I hope you surmount these hurdles. Seems like there is rather less choice in 12th scale, especially for cloth accessories. Hasbro products are all over the place when it comes to (in)compatibility between parts. Inspired by your topic and by a YouTube video where "Skeletor" was showing off his AI-generated versions of Star Wars characters, I tried my hand at that, getting nowhere near Leia, but still some pretty sweet images.

The ones in the gold bikini outfit were extra ridiculous, because the AI often lost track of the limbs and provided extra ones...

She looks great!!! I completely forgot about the jump suit. The two-piece therefore didn't bother me and looks really good, especially combined with the cape, since it hides the turtle neck.

Now I want a comic book Leia. Smile

I am quite neutral to turtle neck, I was more concerned about the waist. But even the Black Series figure shows some bunching up there, and the belt hides it anyway.

And speaking of this comic book look, it is probably easier to achieve it in sixth scale. Cf. https://old.reddit.com/r/hottoys/comments/14mkmo0/custom_comic_book_leia/

I love that new photo you just shared. By the way, the turtleneck comment was actually Diana's, I don't want to steal credit. I wanted to post one of the images I came up with (or rather the AI did for me), but (A) I was weary of intruding on your thread and (B) when I did select one, I received an error message that it was too large, and it was too late at night to reformat it. But I'll see what I can do, maybe in spoilers so it doesn't slow down your images loading on this page. Smile

Here you go, AI-generated craziness. But keep in mind I probably would have gotten much more conventional results if I had actually included Leia's name in the instructions, but the point was to see how a description would be interpreted by the AI -- which seems to have a type. Smile And some of the errors certainly give her an additionally alien aspect, for sure! Nothing dirty here, but some of these might be considered slightly "racy" -- one more reason for putting them in a spoiler.

But that's sorta what you're aiming for in 12th scale, right?

The AI-generated images definitely have a certain stylistic consistency. There is a noticeable uncanny valley effect, even without extra limbs Smile

Yeah.
Or rather both that kitbash and mine are aiming to reproduce the same look, in different scales.

Right, same look. Well, I think you've achieved it. I know you plan on improving it further, but it already works.

This particular AI is actually designed to look like a piece of art, so no uber-realism. I tried another one, where you could set different settings. Using "cinematic," I got the following, among others, for Kleopatra -- I specifically wanted her more Greek than the Egyptianizing cliche, but the AI could only manage overcoming that cultural proclivity so far... At any rate, they are more realistic in style.

Another update. Two things arrived at the same time: BroToys body with shorter ankle extenders (parted out from one of more recent Resident Evil releases) and the right version of the jumpsuit ordered originally.

So I kept the old two-piece turtleneck suit on the old body and put the new one on the new body right away:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8419

She is still taller than Black Series figure, but the difference is not as great as it was in the photo from the previous post

Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8361 Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8421
(I should have put a ruler behind them but thought of that too late)

The jumpsuit looks differently of course. It is thicker and has a texture
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8422

There is also a cut on the back - interestingly, it does not require any sewing to put it on, but it was really difficult to do without breaking the body apart:
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8423

I actually don't know which look I like more. But functionally, the jumpsuit is better. There is no problem with top piece riding up, and it doesn't have cuffs so the forearm pieces (representing long gloves) fit better. This all results in less friction when articulating the body, and therefore improves playability.

And by the way, the body has good articulation. Not exactly spider-girl type of range, but still good, and much better than Black Series
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8424

And at that point I am finally satisfied with the result.
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8426

My first Mezco-style Star Wars kitbash is fully operational.
Custom 1/12 scale Princess Leia project (completed 2024-10-23) Cnr_8427

I'll probably post more of her here, have some ideas about alternative looks - the old body in cloth suit is still there after all.
But I am also starting to think of next projects, since this was so addictive (even if majority of time was spent waiting).

At first I thought of pursuing the Open Carrie idea because this figure ticks off the Concealed Carrie checkbox
Open vs Concealed:

But at the moment another idea is more well  defined in my mind:
