We have seen these (or something just like them) used in many advertisements for other sixth-scale products, so when I saw them for sale on Big Bad Toy Store, I picked one up. They come in four colors (red, green, blue, and purple), and are technically called rather strangely "Single Sofa 3.0".

The fancy armchair is sculpted pretty nicely, if a little softly, and features surfaces colored in red (in this instance) to simulate leather and in a golden or brass color to simulate wooden framing. The paint job is fairly clean, without being very precise. It is a large and opulent piece, measuring as follows (all dimensions somewhat approximate) :

Introduction

After reviewing the Vikings Vanquisher Valhalla version two-figure set by Coomodel HERE, I ended up going for the Viking ship (longship, drakkar/drekar) prow diorama piece that was designed to go with them. Here is a brief review, with a baker's dozen of photos. Since there is little here that is comparable to actual action figures, I have foregone the process of assigning specific points to the different categories.

Packaging



The diorama set comes packaged in two separate boxes, one containing the ship, the other containing the printed background. The ship comes in a large, deep, and surprisingly heavy box. Decorated with a graphic representation of the piece, this box is essentially what we call a "shipper"; there is no interior cardboard box here, and the ship comes nearly packed in a foam container directly inside the shipper box. Everything is safe and collector friendly. The printed background comes in a separate, larger but much shallower box, which has no graphics on it, besides the product's logo/label (still misspelled "Vikihgs").

Sculpting and Accessories



The ship prow appears to be mostly a single sculpted/molded piece, nicely finished to resemble the wooden construction of a Viking longship's prow with overlapping planks nailed together and a carved decoration along the stem. The surface is given enough imperfections and indentations to look like actual wood. The only area where I wish there had been more attention to detail is the upper surface of the "railing," which is quite smooth and bland, and not sculpted to look like a series of interconnected planks; admittedly, you are not likely to notice this unless you are viewing the piece from the "inside" out.



The sculpted dragon's head is a separate piece, which is attached to the top of the main piece -- partly fitting into the opening, partly due to a magnet. The magnet helps hold it in place, but is not strong enough to keep it from falling out if you turned it over. The somewhat stylized dragon's head is very nicely sculpted, with some additional Nordic detail to resemble what would have been carved in wood. With the dragon's head in place, the prow is about 21.5 inches (55 cm) tall. The last photo in the review shows you the relative height of the ship compared to figures standing on the same surface.



The only real accessories in the normal sense of the word are the two ropes, which are nicely scaled and just the sort of thing you would expect to find aboard a ship; you will see them in some of the photos below. (The "simpler" piece, made up of two connected rope hoops, is intended to go over the head of the prow and allow the figures to support themselves by holding onto it, but I forgot to put it there.) If the ship's prow is itself a diorama environment for your figures, it comes with diorama pieces of its own. First, there are the two pieces of sculpted breaking waves, which can be fitted along the sides of the hull. The sculpt is detailed and beautiful, the "water" is the right balance of translucent and opaque, but somehow it does not look quite realistic to me. I was worried that it would come permanently attached to the hull, but was very relieved to see that it was not. So you can easily display the piece with or without the sculpted waves.



In addition to the optional sculpted waves, there is of course the printed background. It is printed on both sides of what appears to be thick stiff cardboard. The background folds into two: one section is wider (about 23.5 inches/60 cm), the other narrower (about 19.66 inches/50 cm); both are 27.5 inches (70 cm) tall. The wider section of the background shows the rest of the ship in a vague and foreshortened perspective, with the unfurled sail bellowing in the wind. The whole scene is depicted as a dark and stormy environment (why is the sail unfurled in all that, I don't know). While not particularly shiny, the printed surface does produce some glare from the light.



The printing on both sides of the background allows you to set up the scene with the ship facing either right or left, and the sail always behind it.



The print has not (yet) creased and torn in the corner fold, though I expect it might eventually, if handled and repositioned often enough; having a corner fold is a bit unfortunate, but I suppose there was little choice when it came to the design (though there may have been a way of attaching a single unfolded printout to the far ends of the background). I still think it works fairly well.



Paint

There is relatively little to say about paint when it comes to this piece (not counting the printed background). The molded hull and dragon's head are colored an appropriate dark brown for a wooden ship, especially one that might have been covered with pitch to keep water out. There is some translucent color to the sculpted waves, which is subtle enough to be reasonably realistic for the most part; perhaps the foam on the crests could have been whiter.



Fun Factor

By itself, the Viking Ship diorama environment is more a work of art than anything particularly fun. But as long as you have action figures you can pose on or in relation to it, you should have no problem adding fun to its beautiful, yet savage look.



Value

This is rather difficult for me to estimate, since I am in the habit of collecting and reviewing action figures, not dioramas and backgrounds. I got mine from Big Bad Toy Store for about $170 (USD), with a very reasonable $4 economy shipping. Given the size, number of boxes (two), and weight of the product alone, I think this is a very decent deal. My suspicions are confirmed by the palpably and in some cases criminally higher prices the product commands on eBay (ranging from about $250 to $550 -- with shipping included). If you like what you see, you might want to get it while BBTS still has it in stock.



Things to watch out for

Not too much, as the piece is pretty solid and in fact quite hefty. That said, I have not tried dropping it to see if it would shatter or crack (or, perhaps just as likely, cause damage to everything else in its path). Remember that the dragon's head is heavy enough, and if you flipped the ship over, the magnet will not be strong enough to keep it attached. I also noticed that, despite the felt on the bottom of the hull and the sculpted waves, sliding them around or removing them carelessly still scratched my work surface -- you might want to be careful if you are placing them on a something valuable or very visible.

Overall

If you like the piece, have the money to spend, and the space to put it (or store it), you will probably be happy with this product. It is large and bulky, but would probably not work as well if it were not. The sculpted pieces and ropes are near perfect. The background is perhaps overly specific (dark stormy night with counter-intuitively unfurled sails), can produce some glare, and has the potentially unsightly corner fold. Nevertheless, it still works fairly well, and we have rarely seen a company go through this much trouble to equip its action figures with such diorama elements. Of course, if this came standard with the figures at no great additional price, it would have been even more impressive, but that does not seem very likely to happen. I am about to move, and this new acquisition is definitely adding up to my anxiety about that process... otherwise, I am very happy with it.

Since they have come up in posts once or twice, and I just received my B set at last (it was sold out or perhaps simply unavailable when I originally tried to order it months ago), here is a mini review of the sixth-scale chairs and table sets A and B, available from various sellers on eBay. These are listed as unbranded, but the listings are sometimes titled Hot Figure Toys -- I don't know whether that is supposed to be the name of a company, or just an attempt to get noticed on searches for Hot Toys action figures.

Each set includes two chairs and a table. Example eBay listing: HERE New link HERE.

Style A is a what I would consider a more traditional Chinese style, with more rectangular and horizontal shapes and intricate woodwork on the chair's back and armrests and the lower surface of the table. On the whole it is more elaborate and detailed than style B.



Style B seems a bit simpler and more modern to me, with a curved one-piece back and armrest to the chair. I cannot be certain that these are made of real wood, but they do look like miniaturizes wooden furniture.



The tables are both just over 8.5 cm (3.33 in) tall and about 6 x 6 cm (2.36 in) wide. The seat of both types of chairs is at 6.5 cm (2.56 in) from the bottom; the chairs from set A are 13 cm (5.12 in) tall and 7 x 8 cm (2.75 x 3.15 in) wide; the chairs from set B are 13.5 cm (5.3 in) tall and about 6 x 7.5 cm (2.36 x 2.95 in) wide.



Although a little bit short and a little bit narrow, the chairs and table work pretty well with most sixth-scale action figures. Particularly muscular or tall bodies would have a harder time sitting naturally in them.



The options for sixth-scale furniture are not endless, especially considering the variety of furniture types that could be made or desired. These can work nicely, even if they (especially set A) clearly represent a particular style. I think they make a useful addition to my collection.

Anyway, the headsculpt was a lot criticized, it could be better for sure, but with the right angle there is something of harrison Ford, definitely... So following on from my recent DAK Pzr Grenadier build thread I thought you all might like to also see the pics I took while putting together the Kettenkrad diorama that he is now displayed with.

This was put together about a year ago now, and consists of a DiD Kettenkrad with trailer, a 21st Century Kettenkrad wit a Dragon trailer, a 21st Century motorcycle combination and 8 figures (if you include the Pzr Grenadier detailed elsewhere.

Lets start with the Vehicles.  The 2 kettenkrads are quite different in their levels of detail as you can see, with the DiD being significantly more accurate to the actual vehicles.  The DiD is also designed so that it can be relatively easily converted to Radio Control.

The backgrounds seen here are posters bought from the internet, and the sandy ground is done with war gaming mats.










The 21st Century Motorcycle combination I had already prepared for another diorama, but used it here instead, so there are no pictures of it being prepared.  It did get new crew, but more on them later.  The bike itself does not represent any actually WWII German motorcycle that I can find.  There are bits of what look like BMW in there and bits of Zundapp I think, but it doesn't look too out of place.

The 21st Century Kettekrad needed to have its towing bar modified by drilling a hole in it, and then fabricating a pin which would secure it to the Dragon trailer.






After this was done Both Kettenkrads had markings and number plates applied, detail painting done and a little bit of weathering, and I began to load them with gear (an ongoing process until they look right to me).










Whilst doing this I also started to put together the uniforms and equipment for the crews.  I can't tell you exactly what figures I used, as most of them were spares I had lying around.  The uniform and equipment parts are DAK parts from any number of different makers including Dragon, DiD and 21st Century to name a few.  As you will see from the pics their looks evolved as I acquired new parts etc... whilst the build was in progress.

With these figures I like to treat each one as its own separate model, using as many photographs from the period as I can find to try and get things looking the way they should.  I appreciate that they should probably look a lot more dusty and weathered but they are done to suit my taste which is for a less weathered look.  I have 1-1 kit for most of these uniform and equipment parts and I will sometimes try out wearing the kit as the figure will be to see if it actually works or not, how comfy it is, whether you can sit down in it etc....

As the subject of posting old work here has been discussed, I thought I'd bring over to OSF my 1st few threads from the post apocalyptic world of the Radio Kings, combined into one massive megapost.  As I add new characters and new threads, I wanted to be able to refer back to this introduction to the Radio Kings story, and figured it'd be good to keep it local here on OSF, instead of referring back to OSW or my own site.

Hopefully it's not too photo dense, or you aren't too bored or sick of old work.  I'm hoping to have a bunch of new stuff up soon.




Crowther, known as Saint Crow, is the 1st finished figure in a series of post-apocalyptic figures I'm working on.  Here's a bit of back story on him, and the world of the Radio Kings.

When the end came, it was not with a bang. No, in the end, we proved that neglect, greed, and ignorance could do more damage than bombs ever could (although the bombs would come later). The temperature continued to change, but we ignored the signs. We polluted the ground, and the air, until almost nothing could grow. When access to clean water, clean land, clean food became a privilege reserved for those that could afford it, so did good health.

While the rich grew powerful, unchecked, this shortsightedness could not last forever.

By the time it became impossible to ignore, it was too late. By the time the people fought back, there was almost nothing left to fight for, so they killed each other for the scraps left behind, while the world starved and rotted and the cities burned.

Still, the richest survived. They built impenetrable citadels, hoarding what resources were left. They took the technology, and with it the means to grow food, to clean the air and the water, and they crushed anyone who came for them, for there was only enough left for themselves. They saved those that would be useful to them, convincing them that to be a servant behind the safety of the walls, was better than to die outside of them. And this they chose to believe.

Over 100 years have passed. In the wastes, only the the strong, the heartless, and the brutal thrive. They've finally learned the lessons of the world's former masters. The fortresses that the leaders of the old world built to survive have become their prisons and tombs. Men who knew nothing but how to reap what others had sown, everything they have continues to break down and decay. So their soldiers venture out into the wastes to take what they want - the servants that they need, children to fill their army's ranks, and anyone with the knowledge to fix their decaying systems.

But even now, there is hope.

Crowther, or Saint Crow as he came to be known, was the first of the Radio Kings. Born in the wastes, he was taken by the men of the Citadels and raised as a soldier, his body modified to be strong, fast, resilient. Children were pitted against each other, until only the strongest survived - and Crowther was a survivor. But once outside the walls, everything changed.

He was part of a scavenging party, looking for old technology, when he discovered rock & roll - The Clash's London's Calling cassette, still in an old radio - and there was no going back. He escaped his masters and disappeared into the wastes. He wandered for years, digging through the ruins of the old world, and devoured any music he could find. Cassettes, cds, vinyl, old MP3 players, anything that he could get working. And then he found it - an old radio station that could be repaired, in a town that could be rebuilt. He sent out word. He'd gather the people necessary to make it all work. This is where he would start over.

Others would follow, and other towns, other stations would rise. In a world where so much had lost any value, old records became currency among these new leaders. They would build something new from the ashes of the old world. This is the world of the Radio Kings.































And no one survives long in the wastes without allies. So I got a few pics of some work in progress figures of some of the other characters from this post apocalyptic world.  









Saint Crow was the 1st of the Radio Kings, but not the only one. As his word spread, others rallied to his dream. Other towns formed, radio stations revived, and other Radio Kings were crowned. And among them, no currency more valuable than old records. Music from the old world was recovered in a number of ways, and while finding old hard drives and digital music players provided a treasure trove of perfectly preserved music, there was something about the rarity of well preserved records, as well as that undefinable quality that vinyl record seem to possess, that made them so priceless among the Radio Kings.

I've been wanting to make 1/6 scale records for the longest time, but as I developed the post apocalyptic world of the Radio Kings, it just started to feel like a necessary prop.



































So, now that I'd been making 1/6 records, I knew I needed a record player. I've been looking for one for a while now, and finally decided I'd take a crack at just making my own. I feel like the design is totally something I'd pick up myself if I saw it.

While the record player at the The Lighthouse, the radio station Saint Crow had found, worked perfectly well, he had long been scavenging the wastes, searching for one of his own. When he finally found one mostly intact, along with a couple of truly impressive floor speakers, he rearranged the old industrial space he has made into his home to accommodate the new additions. But getting them working was far beyond his technical know-how, so he brought in help.

More recently I grabbed the set to build Carol, the tailoring is very good, and the headsculpt is surprisingly well executed, even if the likeness is not great.

I also reworked the hair of daryl and updated his clothes to the most recent seasons...
