I picked up a bunch of the pieces from the Big Chief Studios Flash Gordon set that was released recently. To be honest, I am not the biggest fan of the 1980 film, and the oft-cited attraction of the Queen soundtrack (isn't it just that one song?) does little to impress me (they have done so much better). I suppose I am not a fan of camp. But it is still a fun, vibrant film, stunning visuals (even if my feelings about Art Deco have always been a little ambivalent), cool villains, likable protagonists (even if Flash himself is understated and dubbed, he does have the winning attitude of a friendly Lab or Golden Retriever); and, thankfully, the production does not take itself too seriously. And Ted made such loving references to the film and its leading actor. But I digress.

Discovering that the Flash (Sam Jones) head is (for once) a perfect skin tone match for TBLeague's male suntan bodies, I decided to try to outfit one of those with the fairly basic Flash costume. Originally I had tried the head on M34 (here), and liked it, but these clothes had little chance of fitting on that, which was too bulky for Flash's onscreen look anyway. So I went to M33 (which is also a little too bulky in places), and it worked, more or less. The top works well, the belt even has some leeway, the boots work (and are quite difficult to remove, once in place), but the pants were very difficult to get on. They did not impede some wide stances, but they did make sitting or kneeling almost impossible (trying to come off in the process). Since they are black and their features are not too obvious, they could arguably be replaced by a different similar-looking garment. Here are several shots of the recreated figure looking more or less as intended by the Big Chief set (a benefit of the body swap is that the head does not sit ridiculously high on the neck).

I didn't pick up the Hawkmen firearms, because they didn't look exactly like the prop I was looking at, so I borrowed something very remotely similar from elsewhere. I improvised similarly with other accessories.

Some of the images I had found while doing research appear to have been promotional shots that did not have a direct counterpart in the film (which I rewatched), but apparently tried to tie-in Sam Jones' portrayal of Flash Gordon with the cartoon series. Here are some recreations and adaptations of these.

Back to the film for the execution scene... but here only the head is Big Chief's.

Some more fun with the sword.

Overall, the clothing worked well, perhaps surprisingly so. Only the pants (partly) failed me, but that was only to be expected. The clothing and the head sculpt are a decent portrayal of the character's appearance, without being perfect. Perhaps the hardest thing to get right is the hair, which would be a challenge even with "real hair," given that it was dyed for the movie, and the darker roots need to be showing. A partial bonus is the fact that the molded hair appears to be easily removable from the rest of the head sculpt, which might allow for a rehairing. Thicker and darker eyebrows might help the likeness. And I need to get a plain red wife beater.

As always, what do you think?

Immortal recently-deceased French director Jean-Baptiste de Larochefoucauld is credited with directing the following TV ad in the 1980s, recently discovered in the studio archives.

Why it should not have been allowed to run, especially in the USA, is probably clear enough from the contents...

Medieval Timeline upgrade modification - Sun Mar 06, 2022 12:26 pm

This is a combination of modifications, applied to what was originally a nearly 20-year old set by Dragon, Chris Johnston (Paul Walker) from Timeline (2003). The old Dragon set was probably nice for its time, although it is not quite on a par with more modern action figures in this scale, which have more realistic likeness and better articulation, and usually come with more accessories. Timeline was a pretty good film, and has been held up as the right way to do historical fiction (if you are going to be making up things, do that to made up historical settings and characters rather than distorting actual ones). I am somewhat surprised that it got this much attention in sixth scale, but glad it did. I just wish I had picked up more of these sets when they were more readily available. I finally got this one a few weeks ago, and decided to see what would happen if it were transferred to a better body and given a better head. (By the way, see those knots with a single loop? If anyone has a link to an image explaining how to tie them, please send it along. Thanks in advance.)

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw0110

The body swap was easy enough, as the relatively loose clothing fit on a TBLeague M33. The boots presented a problem as they would not readily come off the Dragon body, restricted ankle articulation, and might not have fit easily on other feet (whether TBLeague or not). I went with the two-part molded ThreeZero boots from one of their Game of Thrones figures (Jon Snow?) at first. They worked great. The head was a bigger challenge. Ever since his untimely demise, Paul Walker has been rendered in sixth scale repeatedly, not always very successfully, but invariably in reference to his part in the Fast and Furious franchise. These all portray a more mature Paul Walker, with a shorter and neater hair, and more stubble. I ended up going with a GAC Toys head (or a knockoff of it), slightly repainting to make it match the TBLeague suntan skin tone and soften the stubble (in retrospect I may have overdone that, as Paul's character in Timeline does have a visible stubble). Of course, the big hurdle was the hair. I went from this (already repainted)...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw0210

to this mess...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw0310

to this (finished, apart from minor futzing).

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw0410

There was no way I was going to be able to replicate the messy slightly curly hair in the film with real hair entirely accurately, but I decided it was close enough (it was not perfectly replicated with Dragon's sculpted hair either). The color is a little on the light side, but my next darker option was too warm a brown to work well. So I went with it. Here is the upgraded figure.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw0810

Overall, I was pleased with the poseability and stability of the figure, and the look seems ok. I ended up making one more change, from the ThreeZero boots to medieval/fantasy leather shoes from a POP or maybe CM set, as something more appropriate for someone dressed like a medieval peasant to wear. I think they are better for this purpose, although much less stable, as they curve up at the front. Here they are, although they are not very visible...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw0910

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tlpw1010

I doubt it is perfect or that I could improve much on it at present, but it is a nice example of the potential of so many of these old sets.

As always, what do you think?

Three Gals - Wed Mar 02, 2022 2:54 am

Gal Gadot seems to be back in season in sixth-scale renditions these days and I recently picked up three Gal Gadot heads. Blonde Beauty (the eBay photos have this as a label, but the listings I saw say "unbranded") is self-explanatory. The medium brown-haired version is GacToys (GC034D). The dark brown-haired version is Hot Toys (Wonder Woman 84 Golden Armor set, MMS577).

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Thrgal10

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Thrgal11

All three are fine heads by themselves, and all have a resemblance to the actress. All three heads fit on TBLeague female seamless bodies of the taller type (I tried S23B and S29B) and are a good match to TBLeague's female suntan skin tone. To decide between the three Amazon Gals, Steve Trevor was needed as a neutral arbiter.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Thrgal12

Unsurprisingly, the Hot Toys version won. She went on a romantic walk with Steve on the beaches of Themiscyra.

TBLeague Ramesses the Great Review - Sun Dec 19, 2021 3:18 am

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tblr1410

Introduction
TBLeague continues its line of imaginative Egyptian-themed mythological and historical characters with "Ramesses the Great." The set is offered in three versions, "white," "black," and "blue," distinguished by the different color scheme for parts or all of some of the items in it. The present review covers the "blue" version, as it provides the correct blue color for the included ḫprš crown (also known as the "blue crown"). The subject was already done by Mystical Forge, as Valley of the Kings Ramesses II (here, sold out), which came with additional pieces like a throne and footrest, and arguably better choice of weaponry (including also a bow, arrows, and quiver, and ḫpš sickle sword), but had a hard plastic visible-jointed body and lower production quality. The production quality of the TBLeague set exceeds that of its predecessor, as does the effect of the overall look. The choice in weapons is largely different, and in lieu of the throne and footstand, one gets a rocky base. Both figures are loosely inspired by Yul Brynner as Rameses II in The Ten Commandments, and even less accurate to the historical Egyptian king Rameses II (r. 1279-1213 BC, probably): both sets feature interpretations, simplifications, and fantasy elements. I rarely get TBLeague's boxed sets (though I sometimes partly reconstitute their figures with parted-out pieces), and this is their very first Egyptian-themed set I have purchased as such. And while I recognize its limitations (particularly in terms of historical accuracy), my expectations are not disappointed and I'm happy with my purchase.

Packaging

The set comes in a single cardboard shipper box with TBLeague's logo and product title, containing two items: the boxed figure and the "boxed" base. The latter is placed within a taped-up two-part styrofoam container. I hate dealing with styrofoam, but it works. The figure's box is of the type usually employed for TBLeague boxed sets. It has a completely removable triptych cover, the sides of which attach to the sides of the box with magnets. As usual, this is decorated only on the outer side (with a stylized image of the figure's head), missing the opportunity for a printed backdrop on the inside. Inside the box, beneath two thinner covers of black foam, are two black foam treys, containing the figure, head, and various accessories. Everything is collector friendly and safe.

Sculpting

The sculpted detail is, as usual, excellent in quality. This includes the head sculpt, which is quite realistic, even if ever so slightly stylized, as often the case with TBLeague's heads. The sculpted detail on the crown, ornaments, armor, weaponry, shield, etc, is beautifully executed, whether historically accurate or not. Some of the pieces are fairly soft plastic, whereas others benefit from some heating with a hair dryer to soften and put in place. The figure uses TBLeague's M33 body. The feet are sculpted with the sandals on.

Paint

The paint job in this set is also superb, and appropriate for it. The "metal" parts looks suitably metallic (even if they are all actually plastic), and also suitably worn. The ornate parts of the jewelry, armor, and weapons, as well as the shield, are quite intricate, yet very precisely painted, while also giving them an appropriate metallic and/or worn look. The most subtle detail is perhaps naturally found on the head sculpt. It shows, I think, an improvement in detail and realism to other male TBLeague head sculpts like their Alexander. The eyes are clearly done and glossy, the eyebrows and eyelashes have plenty of realistic detail, and the skin is painted very realistically, with spots and imperfections, but also suggestions of stubble on the beard, upper lip, and to indicate shaved hair (as opposed to a perfectly bald head). The color match between the plastic head, hands, and feet, and the M33 body is very good. Inevitably, a place where paint application precision has detectable, if minor, limitations, are the sandaled feet.

Articulation

The M33 boy has, of course, excellent articulation. Given the type of clothing (sleeveless tunic) and armor (upper body, lower arms, shins) worn by this figure, they do not impede this articulation much, except to a degree at the thighs, where the tunic would get in the way of very wide stances or splits. Nevertheless, the figure can be made to sit -- which may not be a particularly exciting example of articulation, but is often difficult enough with fully-kitted out figures. Photos of some other stances I meant to show did not work out in terms of picture quality, but the above description and the other photos should be indicative enough. Here he is on the inaccurate throne that TBLeague made for its Tutankhamun sets --

Accessories

The set includes a total of six interchangeable hands: pairs of relaxed and grip hands, a right pointing hand, and a left fist. The sandaled feet are removable. There is an elaborate stand, made up of a realistically-sculpted rock base on a round stepped pedestal and a dynamic (bendable) gooseneck with a clamp that can be screwed into the base. The other accessories include the crown, the broad collar, the upper body armor, the armlets, the vambraces, the greaves, the shield, the spear, a dagger, a sword, sheaths for both, and a letherlike belt with special loops into which the sheaths can be secured. The molded detail is very good, as its painting, giving it the look of slightly worn metal. The greaves and the vambraces are split in the back, to make placing them on the lower legs and lower arms easier; it helps to heat them up first to soften the plastic temporarily.

Outfit

The softer goods that I will classify as outfit as opposed to accessories are few: the sleeveless tunic, which is a reddish brown color in this version of the set, the leather armor for the neck, shoulders, and upper arms, and the belt and apron ensemble (made of thin soft plastic). The tunic and apron ensemble come already on the figure in the box, but the leather armor has to be secured with hooks and loops on straps, a somewhat annoying but not impossible process.

Historical Accuracy

This is, as usual, a weak spot for TBLeague's Egyptian-themed products, even if they are often striking and sufficiently Egyptian-like to seem passably identifiable as Egyptian at first glance. Even with more historical characters, they cannot help themselves from flights of fancy or straying into various inaccuracies. Here is a non-exhaustive list of issues I spotted:

  • The crown is largely accurate (not so much when it comes to the detail on the back), but the serpent head over the brow (which may be placed just a little too high) should not be open-mouthed and snarling. Their treatment of this detail on the Tutankhamun mask was more accurate.
  • The broad collar is more accurate than usual in that it lacks any unlikely and fantastical protrusions, but it does not really replicate any of the numerous examples encountered in Egyptian art or actual artifacts like those from the tomb of Tutankhamun. The detail is rich, but still implausibly sparse, especially at the bottom.
  • The leather armor looks fantastical, and unlike known or suspected leather armor elements from the Ancient Near East (not depicted on Egyptian kings anyway).
  • The cuirass, with its overlapping protective falcons, is probably also fantastical. The overlapping protective falcons are a genuine element of Egyptian royal attire, sometimes seen in a military context; but the actual example from the tomb of Tutankhamun is a hefty piece of jewelry, not armor -- although I suppose here we could pretend to be looking at jewelry over armor. The style of the falcon's body is un-Egyptian.
  • The vambraces are largely fantasy, although at least in this case we have depictions of a single vambrace of remotely similar appearance being worn on the arm holding the bow (TBLeague did not include a bow and arrows).
  • The greaves, although given a beautiful Egyptian-looking decorative detail, are pure fantasy. Greaves were not a feature of Egyptian armor, at least not before the importation of Greek mercenaries in the 7th and 6th centuries BC.
  • The sandals, like those made for the Tutankhamun set (which were very different) incorporate some features of traditional Egyptian design (of which there were several types) and yet fail to replicate any historical piece, to the best of my knowledge, and certainly not the most iconic design.
  • The armlets employ traditional Egyptian design elements. To what extent these particular elements would have been employed in a piece like this I'm not sure, although armlets and bracelets in general were real enough.
  • I'm not certain we know enough about Egyptian military belts. Daggers were certainly tucked into the regular belt and apparently unsheathed. Sickle swords likewise, but TBLeague provided a very different, seemingly Aegean, sword type instead. Maces and axes (neither included in this set) are shown suspended, somehow, from the belt, and would have been far more common than any sword.
  • The soft plastic pair of belts and apron assembly are more or less plausible in general. However, the horizontal cartouche ovals on the belts contain gibberish text (the top one is not even hieroglyphic -- it seemingly spells out ALB, if these were Latin letter forms -- though it looks almost proto-Sinaite, i.e., an intermediary between hieroglyphic Egyptian and alphabetic Phoenician); but that may be giving it too much credit. On the other hand, the cartouches placed vertically on the central section of the apron, however small and stylized, spell out Rameses II's most important royal names correctly: Wosermaʿatrēʿ-setepenrēʿ Raʿmeses-meryamūn. Now why couldn't they replicate other detail with this sort of accuracy?
  • Neither the shape of the shield nor its otherwise gorgeous decorative detail can be called remotely Egyptian (perhaps with the partial exception of a lotus bloom).
  • The spear is probably too long and has an implausible sharpened butt -- more appropriate for later Greek "lizard-killer" spear butts.
  • In some instances (like the blades), perhaps a different metal color (for bronze) might have been advisable.

Fun Factor

While none of TBLeague's other Egyptian-themed figures has an obvious direct connection to Rameses II (and arguably the gods are even more fantastical than the historical characters), there is enough continuity in design and appearance, not to mention theme, to help integrate this product with others. For all of its historical inaccuracies (which are likely to be irrelevant or go unnoticed for non-specialists), the product has great quality, articulation, and selection of different accessories, allowing for a variety of display choices and interaction with other TBLeague (or other companies') figures. The figure's base is a cool display option, although I do not know how well it would match those that came with TBLeague's other Egyptian-themed sets -- I have not gotten any of those as such, but seem to remember a variety of styles.

Value

Retailing at around $220 (USD), this is not a cheap set, even by present standards. But it is not entirely excessive for what it is, either. The quality is excellent throughout, and the product matches what was advertised in the promotional images. There could have been arguably better choices, and ideally there could have been additional choices. Why no bow and arrows and/or other appropriate weaponry? Why not a better Egyptian throne than the one they made for Tutankhamun? Maybe even a chariot, but I guess the cost would have added up. My historical accuracy misgivings aside, I'm glad I got this as a boxed set, instead of trying to partly reconstitute it from parted-out parts as I so often do.

Things to watch out for

There is little here that is particularly fragile or tiny. But I would be careful with the armlets, vambraces, and greaves, lest putting them on or removing them damages the soft seamless body. The armlets are soft enough, but with the other pieces, I would warm them up with a hair dryer before putting them on or taking them off (as mentioned, they are split at the back, so one doesn't have to remove hands and feet to put them on or take them off). Similarly, I would warm up the crown before sliding it over the head -- just in case it scratches. The little leather-like straps for the "leather" armor are pretty fine, one should probably exercise a modicum of caution when working with them. It helps they work with hooks rather than buckles. The military belt requires some looping, but it is not too bad. Given their metal endoskeleton, TBLeague figures have a relatively high center of gravity and are not easy on the ankles -- something exacerbated by headgear, armor, shields, and protruding limbs and weapons. So be careful balancing your figure and accept the potential that it might fall over. An action figure stand would help -- the base and its stand are cool but perhaps unnecessarily elaborate.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Tblr1010

Overall

Is this the perfect (and yes, for me that means historically accurate) Rameses II? No. Can it become that by skipping one or two fantastical elements (like the greaves, for example)? No, it would take more customization than that. But it is still a great looking set produced in great quality. Egyptian-themed design tends to be a tad too specific to allow turning this into a truly random fantasy character, but there is still plenty of potential for fun and appreciation here. Moreover, it is not excessively expensive, and it should still be readily available enough. So while I can probably find more things wrong or annoying with it than most others, I would still recommend it.

Where to buy?

They just started shipping a couple of weeks ago, and in some places are still on pre-order (but that also means they are not sold out); prices appear to vary between retailers and over time -- in some cases this might have something to do with whether the base is included or not, so check the listings carefully. Among other places, you can find them at the following online retailers:

GianToy has them for $250 (price has gone up, in stock) HERE

Big Bad Toy Store has them for $190 (but pre-order) HERE and HERE and HERE

Monkey Depot has them for $220 (but pre-order) HERE

Timewalker Toys has them for $214 (but pre-order) HERE

Here he is with my partly reconstituted Mystical Forge Valley of the Kings Ramesses II (on a TBLeague M33 body) and my customized TBLeague Tutankhamun (on a TBLeague M32 body) --

While I don't consider myself afflicted by Egyptomania, I find many aspects of Ancient Egypt fascinating. That is one of the reasons why I keep being divided by TBLeague's Egyptesque offerings, excited in principle, let down by poor choices or what I consider extraneous rationale. I have not bought a single one of their Egyptian-themed figures as a set, although I have picked up many parted out pieces -- some that were just interesting, most that were historically accurate -- or reasonably close. (Apologies to Delanie, who does not like Egyptians -- or Romans.)

TBLeague's Pharaoh Tutankhamun (HERE) was at first sight less fantastical than some of their other Egyptian-themed products, but in fact very little is salvageable if one wants to go for historical accuracy. The costume is not worth discussing (though it might point to a videogame as the inspiration for the look), the throne is a fantasy hybrid with very crude hieroglyphic gibberish, the bracelets a little off, the armor mostly fantasy, the sandals a mish-mash of Tut's slippers and a type of actual sandal, the collar turned into a sort of fantasy armor, etc. The two scepters (crook and flail) and to a lesser extent the spear are reasonably good approximations of real pieces -- though a bit oversized. The head is inspired by the famous gold mask found on Tutankhamun's mummy, and more generally the appearance of the king's head as rendered on several of the coffins and coffinettes from his burial in the Valley of the Kings. But even it has problems: the blacked-out eyes do correspond to one coffin and one coffinette, but only because the white eye inlay in those instances degraded and turned black over time; the gold mask has a neck and collar attached, TBLeague's masked head does not. And on the back of the mask's headgear, just above the "braid," TBLeague decided to improve on the beautiful simplicity of the original Egyptian design by introducing sections of concentric rosettes. (Philistines! Would that Rameses III should rise again...) Ok, vent over...

That said, their rendition of the head was more accurate than most, and I decided to pick it up to see if I can modify it into something closer to the real thing. In fact, I picked it up twice, as I chose to do both a (partial) mask and a human face look. The only other pieces from this set I used below are the crook and flail scepters, and the appropriate hands to hold them. I repainted the head and the scepters, and used an M32 body instead of the set's M33 (either one is too tall, but M32 has a more slender physique). The clothing is a historically-accurate loin cloth (not visible) and kilt (shendyt) on top of it. For the rest, generally, I picked pieces that were relatively easy to replicate. The apron, broad collar necklace, and bracelets were scanned from images of actual treasures from the burial of Tutankhamun (I should say I'm not specifically trying to make a Tutankhamun), scaled, then made a bit bigger (since Tut was substantially shorter and smaller than the 1:1 equivalent of the M32 body), printed, coated with tape and reinforced with cloth tape, and scoured for a modicum of relief. The bull's tail was done in a similar manner and attached to a wire (which might get covered up later on). The girdle is cloth tape. The human head got a string to hold the false beard in place. The sandals were sculpted, badly, by me. This is still a work in progress, with some improvements and alternative clothing options in the works, eventually. A bonus was learning a couple of new things about what I ended up making (or ended up passing on).

Here is a comparison of the original head from the TBLeague set with the modified mask and human heads. The original head looks perhaps most stylish to me, but since it does not correspond to historical reality, I have little use for it. The masked head is likely to strike as having overly bright blues, but that is actually about right -- although different lighting conditions and the differing effect between Tut's gold and TBLeague's bronze paint make it look a bit off. The human face naturally ends up on the stylized side, given that it is a repaint of the mask; moreover, the make up is perhaps more in line with artistic convention than actual real application (as seen in painted busts of Nefertiti and Akhenaten) -- but with the eye and eyebrow lines in relief, I felt I had to paint them in -- since the result is a good match for Egyptian artistic convention, I'm not too disappointed.

The headdress is glued to the head but can be pried off (which helps when painting it or retraining its flaps with hot water). Here is a makeshift use of the blue crown from the Mystical Forge figure of Rameses II. The crown is a bit too big to fit properly, and TBLeague's upcoming version promises to be a better rendition of that piece. But one gets the idea.

Update: additional photos in Post 12.

For the review of the original set, see HERE.

Well, what can I say, I've pulled an ActionFigureMovies move and, after finding an extra Soo Soo Toys Mr Butcher set tropical shirt and jeans, experimented with recreating Billy using a TBLeague M33 body, which I figured was about the right build and stature for the character (you can see a comparison photo to the set figure farther down). I borrowed one of the heads, belt, and accessories, gave him a watch and a necklace to match the on-screen appearance, and some temporary boots (from ACI) that are an improvement in terms of stability and articulation, but not appearance (as I said, they are temporary). No special effects.

So here are a few photos of the reconstituted figure to start with.

Despite the restrictiveness of the long sleeves of the coat, the elbow bent is already better.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb219

These poses with the crow bar were inspired by promotional images for the series.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb310

And the cattle prod one is based on a still or set photo.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb311

This one is based on a still.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb312

Say goodbye to your Compound V if you get any closer! I will crush the rest of them, I swear!

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb313

He can wield the hammer much better, fitting it more easily in the softer plastic TBLeague hands, and without bending or twisting the relatively soft rubber handle of the hammer.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb314

What's better than pounding away while buzzed?

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb315

Is that enough of a drill for you? Also based on still.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb316

Oh, hello there, mate. What's wrong with your elbows? Are you sure the cattle prod is as effective as my crow bar?

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb318

I'm glad we got to discuss it over drinks.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb319

Electrical drill it is!

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb317

Given the ending of Season 2 (no spoilers -- mostly), you may be wondering what Billy Butcher is likely to get himself into during Season 3. Well, some of that is pretty obvious, so here go some predictions.

First, his kid or not, he is going to be, despite his nihilistic nature, a pretty decent dad. Considering the circumstances...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb410

I don't know how he will find the time, or the patience, or the knowledge, but I'm sure he'll pull it off...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb411

And speaking of pulling it off, to the delight of our ladies, it seems that he has picked up an extra day (or is it night?) job...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb412

... apparently to get close to a certain female crypto-supe villain...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb413

That's it for the predictions, but I thought these showed off the more neutral head sculpt's remarkable likeness

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb414

and realism.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Sstmb415

What do you think?

King Tutankhamun (or Tutankhamen) ruled Egypt as pharaoh for 10 years until his death at age 19, around 1324 BC Although his rule was notable for reversing the tumultuous religious reforms of his father, Pharaoh Akhenaten, Tutankhamun's legacy was largely negated by his successors. He was barely known to the modern world until 1922, when British archaeologist Howard Carter chiseled through a doorway and entered the boy pharaoh's tomb, which had remained sealed for more than 3,200 years. The tomb's vast hoard of artifacts and treasure, intended to accompany the king into the afterlife, revealed an incredible amount about royal life in ancient Egypt, and quickly made King Tut the world's most famous pharaoh.

Anubis is the Greek name of the god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld, in ancient Egyptian religion, usually depicted as a canine or a man with a canine head. Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumed different roles in various contexts. Depicted as a protector of graves as early as the First Dynasty (c. 3100 – c. 2890 BC), Anubis was also an embalmer. By the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055 – 1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris in his role as lord of the underworld. One of his prominent roles was as a god who ushered souls into the afterlife. He attended the weighing scale during the "Weighing of the Heart," in which it was determined whether a soul would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead.

Apart from minor variations, the TBLeague stainless steel skeleton is apparently fairly standard across models, even sexes, and the one from a departed M31 body should illustrate some of the significant features and limitations of the joints.

Disclaimer: Although they are fairly resilient, always handle these action figure bodies with care and do not force anything too far. Proceed at your own risk.

I hope you enjoyed the goofiness. And one does not need specially-designed c-shaped pieces to achieve this, as you can stuff other materials in a similar fashion with similar effect (foamies, rolled up strips of plastic lids/treys, etc).

Part I

This will eventually be placed in the Tutorials section.

What do the following four head sculpts have in common? I mean, other than their sex and arguably enviable looks. Smile

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0110

They are all partly repainted to match the TBLeague bodies that carry them. In the first three instances these are Hot Toys sculpts, and between the expense of procuring them and the excellence of the detail, my repaint is very subtle, essentially a thin film to lessen the gap between the slightly lighter and cooler skin tone of the original sculpts and the the quite tan TBLeague body. In the fourth instance my repaint was a little less subtle, for various reasons.

Sometimes you get lucky with a head sculpt matching the body right out of the box, like this HY gladiator John Cena. Sometimes you do not, like this Dragon Sam Worthington (which also required quite a lot of modification to fit bodies with integral necks like DAM, TBLeague, etc).

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0210

It is this last head sculpt that I have been meaning to repaint for quite a while, but its pale and yellowish skin tone is so big a contrast that it was going to take something more than the very subtle repaints I normally give head sculpts. Here it is again, compared to the slightly repainted Hot Toys Chris Pratt.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0310

Here is what we need: several acrylic colors (I prefer Vallejo) to mix to approximate the TBLeague suntan skin tone (in this instance), and some Liquitex Professional Ultra Matte Medium (thanks, Sky!) to keep the paint from curing too shiny.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0410

The mix that I find works well in approximating the TBLeague male suntan skin tone (as used for M31 to M36A) is cork brown with lesser amounts of dark vermillion, iraqui sand, and leather brown. I also used some burnt umber and German black brown (not shown) for some darker details on the face. Lip color (the bane of my repainting experience) was achieved by mixing dark vermillion, cork brown, ivory, and some blue. It came out a little fresh, but is pretty close to the reference photo I used. I could probably have used even more Liquitex matte medium (which appears white in the photo).

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0510

I mixed the matte medium and the acrylic paint thoroughly to achieve an even color with a toothpick.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0610

Then I tested how the resulting color compares with the body's skin tone. Since it was close enough, I proceeded to paint the ears and the area between the hairline and the edge of the back of the head. Since these areas will sit right next to the neck, and since (except for the ears themselves) they form a notionally separate surface than the face, I was not worried about making the paint application particularly thin or transparent here. I think the match is pretty close (keep in mind that light, screen settings, and individual perception would vary). Here I should point out that a proper head sculpt paint (or repaint) job would involve stripping the original paint (if any) by dipping in acetone, etc., and starting with thin layers from scratch. My approach is more basic and less ambitious, essentially a touch up. Given the great disparity between the skin tone of the head sculpt and what I needed to match, that was not necessarily the best strategy in this case. But anyway...

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0710

After this, using a fine brush (except for painting tiny details you don't actually need to use a 000 micro brush) with plenty of water, I applied some of the mixed paint onto the face, and then proceed to spread it as a thin layer with a cotton q-tip. In fact, I did not use enough water or start with a small enough area, and while I was fiddling with the camera it began to dry faster than I could attend to it properly with the cotton swab. That is why I had to do some damage control, which provides the occasion of noting that you might want to have a little container with alcohol standing by, so that you can quickly fix any errors by wiping them away with another q-tip dipped in it.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0810

Repeating this in other areas to cover the face, largely avoiding any fine details I was trying to preserve (like the eyebrows and the eyes), I covered everything that needed to be covered. Panting in thin layers produces an initial dirty and somewhat uneven effect, which is one of several reasons why you would want to go for a second or third layer. I still wanted a little bit of translucency to the skin, but between damage control and the stark contrast between the original and desired skin tone, that was not going to be very noticeable on this particular experiment. While I am not necessarily done tinkering with it, the result is this.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp0910

The dark line over the eyes (which is there in the reference photos I used) is much less obvious and less fake looking in hand than in the macro photos. While I do feel I have lost a little bit of the fine subtle detail of the original paint job (as I expected in this instance), I think the result is passable and, as far as matching the body's skin tone is concerned, successful.

Lighting makes a big difference in perception, so there are a few more images.

Topics tagged under tbleague on OneSixthFigures Hmrp1110

Finally, this time I did remember to take before and after photos (there is hope for us all!), although I had to resort to some color manipulation to make them properly comparable due to somehow different light conditions.

TBLeague Anubis 1/12 Scale Review - Fri Mar 26, 2021 10:06 am

Here's the god of death, Anubis, in TBLeague 1/12 scale. Ever since I first saw him, I knew I wanted to get him. Very cool, badass looking god! I love all the fine details of his costume, plus he scales well with Figuarts toys!

I had this for a few weeks, and meant to review it; and, of course, was inspired to goof around with the subject. Seeing it parted out yesterday made me finally process the photos, so here it is. I tried it out on a TBLeague (formerly Phicen) M33 body, for which it was not designed. To my surprise it fit quite well -- and no stains! The only thing is, as someone pointed out previously (Sky?), M33's arms appear to be a bit on the long side (I always thought it was the slightly short legs -- sans ankle extenders -- that made them appear so). Well, this shows here. But otherwise, a pretty good fit. It would fit perfectly on a conventional hard-plastic visibly-jointed body -- and if you are going to be putting the jacket on it, you might as well use that. But if you will expose the elbows by using just the t-shirt, the length of the M33 arms becomes less of an issue. And before anyone points it out, Ant-Man's quantum whatever let him travel to the Star Wars universe and get a realistic seamless arm and hand... Smile

The Winter Soldier clothing set by Top Toys is pretty simple but well-made. It includes the head sculpt (a decent likeness of Sebastian Stan, though certainly not the best), black shoes (for ankle pegs), black pants, a dark blue t-shirt, and a blue leather-like jacket. Anything else you see in the images below did not come from the set. (And nothing in the parody that follows came from this set.)

The beautiful interior is borrowed from a chance find online, the work of the amazing Marek Okon. Look him up and enjoy his masterpieces.
